The past two days and over 30 miles have been difficult but very blesed ones. We left St. Jean at 7:30am to cross the Pyrenees to Roncevalles. We arrived 8 hours later after sloggy thru drastic uphill and downhills, pouring rain, sleet, blasting wind and life sucking mud. Today we headed out for Zubiri with the sun today, but still climbs and decents, but this time extremely soar muscles from the day before. Today we walked almost the same distance but in 5 hours! Sooo many trials and so many blessings, but insufficient time to share here as I have to get to the hostel before the doors close for the night. I was blessed by new friends new friends from all over the world, amazing scenery, and great walks and talks with God! Also the ... read more

Now we want it to rain!! 22km today and not a cloud in the sky. Water consumption has gone through the roof with shade hard to find at times. Amazing countryside with track going from one village to another usually between 3 and 5km apart. Each village provides shade and usually a cafe or bar where the food and drinks are cheap and very nice. mum I now know why your Gazpatcho soup was invented - so refreshing in the middle of a hot day. Soup or a potato and egg omelette are only two euros at most places. Beer is two euros for 250ml and a cuppa one euro twenty. Meals at night are very reasonable mostly 12 - 15 euros for 3 courses. Met quite a few Americans today, interesting, a dad with his ... read more

Saturday was a glorious day. The sun was shining and the Factor 30 came out of the cupboard. We didn't want to leave Pamplona without climbing its nearest mountain (or is it a hill - who knows!!). San Cristobal looms large to the north of the city and when approaching from the Bilbao/Vitoria road that's how you know you have arrived. Atop you can always see the radio masts except for when low cloud obscures the view and we have seen it covered in snow more than probably any other short term visitor!! It is possible to drive all the way to the top. We decided to make the most of the good weather and walk all the way. First though, we parked at Ansoain old town and walked up to its church which is currently ... read more

So 1600mg of Ibuprofen later and Fiona is pinging down today's trail, only wish we had found this product 22 years ago! Walk through about 3km of the city and the first 10km of the trail in rain -4th day in a row - stopped at a couple of great spots for coffee, tea and pastries. The agreement when we left was I could walk ahead provided I waited at any intersection I came across until Fiona turned up. So we start up a hill and I head off leaving Fiona, yvette and father Ken trailing behind. About half way up I notice a trail heading off to the left that indicates bikes should go this way and hikers straight ahead. I took this path as I could see that further up the hill the tracks ... read more

Well today was pretty tough for Fiona who hobbled all the way to Pamplona in a lot of pain. At this stage we are firmly ignoring all medical advice and using drugs to keep her going. Thankfully today just the one dose. Father Ken also travelling with us had some too, as did one of the couple we travelled with by cab to St Jean on Monday. Only the Scandinavians seem to do the Camino with no ailments. One guy went past so fast we did not even get the chance to say "buen Camino". There was no doubt of his lineage - at least six foot three and blond. The comment of the day went to a 22 year old German - Sebastian - who started his walk in Munich -yes the Munich in Germany ... read more

It's been a long time coming! At last the sun has come out in Pamplona!! So, what did we do? Well, we had a very busy weekend, so here goes! For three successive nights we went to the Tres Sesenta (360) Music Festival which was fantastic. Ok, so we didn't see every band because we need sustenance and without a siesta we would never have made it through to 1am, let alone 2.30 when the final act finished on the Saturday night. I suspect we were in bed before they even started though!! It was quite an eye opener though and the ancient ciudadela made a fabulous venue for such a festival. On the Friday night we even managed to blag our way up to the VIP area where food and drink were free! Our wristbands ... read more

On a beautiful sunny day there are few better sights than a glorious lake, fields of wild flowers and a sky full of twittering birds. Luckily Mother Nature smiled on us and we were able to get down to the laguna at Pitillas without seeing a cloud in the sky. We arrived on the day of the "Fiesta del Agua" which we assumed would mean activities and people, but the visitors' centre was closed for the occasion unless you had pre-booked a guided visit which was a bit of a shame. Nevertheless, we had a great time walking around some of the lake. The winter rains have left many of the footpaths completely flooded and we had to be brave and imaginative at times to continue our walk. ... read more

We hadn't planned to go away last weekend but as the sun was shining we thought we had better make the most of it. So, off we went down the motorway, paying our tolls, and soon enough we were negotiating the different coloured parking zones in Tudela. We ended up settling for the blue zone and, astonishingly had to pay just 75 cents to cover ourselves for the whole weekend! That's because there was only an hour left that we needed to pay for. Once again we got a good deal with NH Hotels and they allowed us to check in early which was nice. We then strolled through the town centre (or is it a city centre?) where we sat in the Plaza de los Fueros and ate our lunch. The sun was shining and ... read more

Towards the end of last year Trish was given the opportunity to be an "extra" in a film. You should be able to see The Counselor before the end of this year. Her scenes were shot in the desert of the Bardenas Reales and since then we have wanted to go and explore the area a little. Staying in Tudela gave us the perfect opportunity. We set off after breakfast and headed straight to the southern section of the national park. On the maps a road was marked which we could drive up to a spot from where we could do a nice walk. The road was a track and very rough at times. Luckily we have been on such roads before and know how to drive on them. Even so, we would rather have had ... read more

Winter will soon be over, or so we hope! Bearing that in mind we headed up into the Pyrenees and revisited Roncesvalles. At first we were disappointed by how little snow there was but then suddenly we hit the snow line and it was impressive. Huge banks of snow lined the road where it had been swept to one side and enormous piles could be seen between the houses. A short time ago several of the villages in the region had been completely cut off due to fresh snowfall. A glimpse inside the courtyard of the Real Colegiata de Roncesvalles showed us exactly why. It was full of snow as you can see from the photos. Many people had parked up to get a closer look and to supervise their children sliding down the small slopes ... read more
