Route: Zirauki - Villamayor de Monjardin The albergue in Zirauki turned out to be very nice. We had the great advantage that we were just 2 people in one big room. My roommate a nice guy from the US. Had just quit his job on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean. A beautifill day. Temperatures in the low 20s with sunshine. Nice surroundings, up and down. I did 25 km in some 6.30 hours. A bid slower than could have been, because I accompanied a lady from New zealand (Jane) with leg problems. I felt it rude and unchristian to leave her to her fate. She made the albergue in Villamayor de Montjardin, which is run by a Dutchman named Bert, managing the albergue for a Dutch non profit organization. Interesting. Feel good, but have some ... read more

Route: Zariquiegui - Zirauki Another night of rain. Rain makes me feel nervous. I envision myself walking in the rain all day with everything getting wet. A miserable prospect. Fortunately when I woke up, the rain had stopped. Shortly after leaving the village where I spent the night we had to climb a small but relatively steep hill called "El Viento del Perdón". Under strong winds I went uphill to find that the going was very heavy. The rain had made the clay sticky. It stuck to your boots and getting it off was not easy. The sticking clay at some moments made me 1 to 2 inches taller. Heavy going. Up the hill there are a number of figures cut out of steel, personificating pilgrims. Unfortunately I did not take a photo of them. Further ... read more

Route: Aquerreta -Zariquiegui Today a bit longer (30 km approx.) than I have planned for my Camino, which is 25 km/day, in about 7.30 hours. A long day that took me through Pamplona where I was able to get a prepaid mobile line and get money out of cash machine. The mobile will keep me in touch with the outside world and will keep me in touch with the family. First day that I did not made reservations in a hotel. Somewhat later in the day in the middle of nowhere I found a "albergue" where I will be sleeping in a community room of about 8 people (bunkbed). That will keep me humble... Pamplona is nice, but kind of strange after 2 days in the woods. Will try to make reservations again for tomorrow. Makes ... read more

Route: Roncesvalles - Aquerreta (or Akerreta in Basque) Starting the day, I am confronted with a sign that put in perspective what I am trying to accomplish: Santiago de Compostela 790 km..... Interesting is to observe how everything here in Basque country is in double language. The Basque language does not sound nor looks like spanish. Under way, fortunately everybody understands Spanish. A long day with very nice weather. I walked 29 km in about 7 hours and am now in the hotel en Akeretta where they filmed "The Way". I did not get the Martin Sheene room, but than again you can not have it all. We are staying here just 2 people: Paul Lynn (an american) and myself. A somewhat hilly territory we passed through today. Although we lowered from about 900 to 600, ... read more

Route: St Jean Pied de Port - Roncesvalles After a somewhat sleepless night due to jetlag and continuous rain, I started out very early (6.30 AM) by taxi from Roncesvalles to St Jean Pied de Port; a distance of about 25 km by car. It was still raining when I left the hotel. Not a good feeling. Gradually the rain stopped when I came to St Jean. A tremendous relief. Once in St Jean Pied de Port, registered at the pilgrims office and was given my passport and shell that identifies you as a pilgrim. The day was not easy. A long uphill road followed by a very short steep downhill. All in all, 27 km completed in 6.15 hours. Tremendous winds high in the Pyrenees that made you lose the feeling in your hands. Spectacular ... read more

From our apartment we can watch the sun set over the nearby mountains to the West of Pamplona. Wondering what lay beyond, we borrowed the car from work and set out to explore. What a day we had! Within minutes the road begins to meander up and through the mountains. We were soon in awe of our surroundings. The views were truly amazing and, if we needed any further proof that our move to Pamplona was the right one, here it was. Along the way we passed through several tiny villages. Each of them had houses with terracotta roofs and an ornate church. Some seemed to consist of just a handful of dwellings but sure enough, a church was never far away. Somewhere around the settlement of Salinas de Oro (Salty Gold!) we found a viewpoint ... read more

Spain via the less travelled route. Camped beneath the white cliffs at Folkstone on 7th September we were looking forward to some proper summer weather and a bit of scenery in Northern Spain whilst the weather might be still be ok and the crowds hopefully have gone back to school/work etc. Arriving at St.Valery en Caux only to find the Aire packed with no space at all yet again(couldn’t get a space in June either), we went back to Veule les Roses just 10 minutes along the coast. Weather was great and a couple of days were spent walking the cliffs and beach before heading south. One night stays at Broglie, La Suze sur Sarthe, Turquant, St.Jean de Angeley and a really quaint hamlet called Laas which is in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Our vital ... read more

Pamplona looks like it's going to be a wonderful place to live and work. We are very happy and 110% sure that this has been the right decision! We have now moved to a lovely apartment on the Western edge of town. Nearby we have a riverside walk which is marvellous when the sun is shining. Not sure how much longer summer will hang on for but it's been amazing so far!! The riverside walk took us past various bridges, old and new. We saw people rowning and fishing and generally enjoying the fresh air. There wasn't a hint of "hello, where you from, where you go" like we had every time we went for a walk in Vietnam. It was so refreshing. Just the occasional "hola" from passing folk was really nice. We've been exploring ... read more

Sept 12 Diego picked us up and took us 10-12kms to Los Arcos. We stayed in Casa de la Abuela (thank-you again Helen)Dorm style 6 bunks, all new, they even did our laundry for 50 cents.Supper with 2 Quebecois,Aiden wasn¨t impressed with their politcal views, but the food made up for it.My first paella, and that was the first course. Now you see why I¨m not losing weight. Sept 13 Left 7:15 arrived Viana 1:00.19.kms,with alot of up and down,Aiden still hasn¨t had to use his knee brace and some parts were very steep.Stopped a couple of times, small breaks seem to make a differance, and the chocolate helped I think. The views were spectacular, vinyards, olive trees everywhere.Grapes taste very sweet. We stopped in Torres del Rio to visit a 12th century Iglesia de Santo Sepulero linked to the Knights Templar. In Viana we stayed in a renovated ... read more

Sept 8 we travelled 22 kms.Left at 8:30 and arrived 3:30,last 4 kms killed us.The paths were good, through forests, over hills, and through a few little towns. The flowers growing on the side of the paths are amazing and from the looks of the rose hips we missed hundreds of rose bushes. Looking for our hotel we found another one,Hotel Yoldi. The room had everything but would only fit one person,so we had ajoining rooms, needless to say Aiden enjoyed spreading everything out.Interesting city,we had 2 days of watching how people spend their time.We sat at a cafe in this huge square and vans showed up and offloaded and entire orchestra. What an evening!Everyone sits facing the square, watching everyone else. They sip wine, cafe or a cocktail, but nobody eats. Finally about 8:30 food started, and worth the wait.No way we are losing weight. Sept 10,feeling well ... read more
