Route: O Pedrouza to Santiago de Compostela Just a brief note for now: I have arrived in Santiago de Compostela. Difficult to describe my emotions: gratitud, satisfaction, happiness on the one hand, sadness on the other hand because the adventure comes to a close. Hard to grasp that I just finished walking almost 800 km and that it really ends here and that on monday I will be traveling back to Venezuela to be with Margarita, who I have been missing terribly here since my arrival.I will keep you posted on other things that may occur while I am here.... read more

Oct 11 Yes ,we made it! We left around 8:30,just getting light;Started with a light rain, and then it came down in earnest. We did not run but definitely our best time,10:30We stopped just short of the cathedral to get a coffee and warm up a bit.No trouble getting a seat and recognised some people from the walk. One of them ended up on the alter, serving mass. The mass was attended by about 14 priests, some had done the walk. The pictures tell a better story than I can,so I will just say it was amazing. Just stayed another day and then tried to find a dryer spot.... read more

Buenos Dias, Domingo, and it is going to be a special day with the final 20km. I have walked even more than the 800km because I went back a town for someone in the early stages. No taxis or busses and carried my pack every day! In Santiago I might even weigh it! Yesterday was great as I found John again, the chap from Glastonbury who sees things in a remakably similar way to me. I would love to go and do one of his courses in astrology and astromony. I feel so fortunate today to also have Petra from Rotterdam to walk with. She is here before travelling to Australia before the end of the year. Just in case I manage to forget there is a website called helpx.net that I heard of yesterday. Similar ... read more

It was another warm day, perfect for walking...we had the gum trees again.....since Sarria there has been a ten km mark on the arrows letting us know how much further...its 100km from Sarria to Santiago I got about 5km out of Santiago and all of a sudden it hit me.....when we arrive in this big city ...the ones we don’t ... read more

Actually I left Santiago today but I´ll be talking about it so that will be close enough So for those of you playing along at home, on Friday I reached Santiago de Compostela, thereby completing the Camino Frances, receiving my certification, and hence having a whole bunch of sins remitted- purgatory now holds no fears for me. It was only the second day in which I´d had to walk in the rain, and I´d woken at 2am having been attacked by the camino´s greatest enemy - the bed bug. So I basically walked the final 37 Kms wet and itchy. I walked straight past all the monuments, the cathedral, the lot, so that I could get to my hotel, get showered and changed and head to the pharmacy to get something the ease the bites. Once ... read more

We had no intentions to go to Santiago, but Liz brother Hugo said, what you go to Spain and do not go there? We found out that Santiago was declared the third holiest city after Rome and Jerusalem. Pilgrims go there by foot from all over the world even from America but that involves flying or swimming. That explains the bag packers all over the south of France on foot direction Santiago. The reason for this is St james. He was one of the disciples of Jesus and was killed by Herodus on his return to Judea, in the year 44. His remains supose to be underneath the cathedral. The legend goes that a star pointed to his grave in the ninth century and after more ghostly sightings his remains turned up in Santiago via an ... read more

I signed off quite quickly at the end of the last blog and I hadn´t quite finished what I was going to write. This was because I had had so much to catch up on that I forgot the time! Monica came to find me and told me that it was 10pm and long past our usual bed-time of 9pm! I´ll try to continue on from where I left the blog last time. Apologies for failing to upload the photos. We keep trying but with little success. We will try to get them all on eventually but it may have to be after we get home!! O´Cebreiro (continued) Pat and I wondered what had happened to our back packs as they didn´t seem to have arrived at the Albergue (Monica, sensibly, had carried her´s). We rang ... read more

Journal Entry--------------------- Sunday May 13th, 2012 In the morning there was a knock on my door. I opened it and no one was there. I left the door open and started to gather my belongings. Angel came into my room and said good morning. He waited and lingered in my room as I finished packing up my stuff. I could tell that he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words. I felt the same way. We walked outside and stopped after a while on a corner and we decided that it was time to say goodbye. I decided it would be best not to go with them back to Madrid but to wait here in Santiago for another day and see if I can find Molly. The goodbye was tough. My heart broke four ... read more
