Lazy day or Geocache day? We decided to have a quiet day before we moved on to Santiago de Compostella. Getting up however at a reasonable time is getting more difficult as the days go by! People got up at various times before 11 and we had a bit of brunch - weather is colder than it has been. We decided to have a look round Melide so after uploading a blog and getting some co-ordinates for geocaches we headed off. Arrived in Melide and wandered about the town. The Camino runs straight through it so its littered with small hostels and bars... Most of which were closed like the shops as it was the middle of the day. Looks for a geocache in the centre of town but couldn't find it... It did take us ... read more

Here I sit in a hostel blocks from the Cathedral of St. James - backwhere it ended once and now ends again. I feel a tad melancholy and bittersweet upon this visit to Santiago. I visited the cathedral immediately upon being dropped off (first getting here by car just didn't feel quite right) to say my goodbyes and do one last cruise thru the cathedral. I hugged St. James and went under the altar and saw the casket that supposdely has the bones - none of which I had done before. Then I listened a bit to mass before heading out to the streets to take care of things for the evening. That is when it reallly hit me. I didn't feel like I belonged here any longer. I know I did the walk and earned ... read more

Mr Catherine - always a good way to check in! Taxi arrived at 11 (Charlie's) always on time and even with a little queuing on the M25 we were at the airport by 11.45. Plenty of time as the flight wasn't until 2. Straight through check-in (even though Catherine was down as Mr Catherine Ludlow - no none seemed to care) then security and we went to eat in Giraffe - really good for airport food. Not cheap but at least we had a great view. Then we wandered down to get on the plane. For some bizarre reason they boarded from front to back -but hey doesn't really matter - one man seemed to have the kitchen sink in his hand luggage. im not sure how some people get away with this? Bit delayed taking ... read more

As I stated previously, my journey was not meant to end with Santiago. My pilgrimage was over there and my original intent was to head to France. That having changed I think the Lord has more lessons for me. In some ways getting to Santiago was anit-climatic - add too many emotions, reunions, fatigue and then catastrophe with the train wreck - it was always about the walk not the end. I think I have said before anyway - I can see now I started on The Camino before I ever even left, and I pray it never ends! It was very clear however that I was not meant to go home yet. It was meant for me to walk on and learn some more lessons. I actually now see Santiago as a bit of a ... read more

As I sit to write this on my final day in Santiago I do so with a heavy heart in light of the terrible train crash last night. The crash and the rain today (seems appropriate) have had sombering effects on the city. I will go to the noon mass again today to meet a dear friend of mine, Jeroen (the one who has walked for over 3 months from his home in Holland), and to pray for all those effected by this terrible accident. My heart is heavy, and I really wish to go home, but it is cost prohibitive, so I will walk on tomorrow. What I hoped to find/gain from my pilgrimage occurred what seems ages ago - that and so much more that I never expected. I can't go home early so ... read more

Last night of the Camino - hotel just 10k fr Santiago. Wow a night of a real shower, real towels, a room with A/C, no snoring people, and food delivered to my room. Have to say its delightful but it also feels very strange. The last couple days I have walked with a new friend - Jess from Pennsylvania who oddly enough - lol - is a teacher. The days of walking solo, and the need to, have melted away. Jess and I still seek out the albergue, or in the case of tonight the hotel, that is not where the masses are staying, so that when we walk we walk on a Camino much like the one we started on. Once in a while the hordes of newbies catch us or we catch them. We ... read more

Today was a needed day of rest. I had no real plans and no real sights to see. Mainly just wandered around town, went into some stores, revisited the Cathedral a couple of times, and especially had a good time sitting at the cafes watching people, reading, and overall just taking a break. Santiago is a great city for this rest because it truly is on the end of the pilgrimage route, and all day you see pilgrims stumbling into town, ready to get rid of their packs and walking sticks, and just sit down and celebrate their accomplishment. Actually, traditionally, pilgrims would burn their clothes on the roof of the Cathedral. But this was less celebratory, and more necessary back in the day of rampant diseases and really smelly pilgrims. It makes me wonder, though... ... read more

Hands down, the best day so far. It started out with a nice twist of fate. I noticed the night before that a bus left earlier than my 1:00 departure, so I went to the station, asked, and they nicely put me on the 9:30 bus to Santiago. Absolutely awesome. And then the drive. This part of northern Portugal and Spain is amazingly beautiful. It's not, as people think, arid and dry; rather, this area is just like the Pacific Northwest in the States. Constantly overcast and rainy, with hills covered in dense trees and greenery. And also very dramatic coastline views. I honestly thought I was driving around Puget Sound by Seattle. Made for a breath-taking drive up. And then Santiago Compostela. This city is truly magical, oozing with a religious vibe that I've honestly ... read more

I’m sitting on the boat with a howling gale of over 30 knots going on outside. The boat is rocking from side to side and the wind generators are having a field day. The best part is I’m in a protected harbor tied up to a dock at the yacht club marina. Since there’s absolutely nothing else I can do and I have exhausted all projects (that I want to do at least!), personal hygiene issues and a variety of normally successful stalling tactics I guess it’s time to write the blog about our trip to Santiago. When we first arrived in Cangas we met a young man who sails in this area, spoke fluent English, was currently living in Zürich but whose mother was Spanish and father was American. How’s that for international? Janice, ever ... read more

I'm sitting in the foyer of the Rosarosae Hotel in Santiago de Compostela, waiting for all of our group to get together to say goodbye. It's been an incredible time - physically challenging but emotionally and spiritually rewarding. The people that I have met - both in the group and the locals - have been amazing. We arrived in Santiago on Friday afternoon and it started to rain just as we entered the city. This was the first rain we had had over the nine days since leaving Bilbao. After a quick shower and change of clothes, we had coffee and pastries in the hotel's breakfast room, while we waited for our guide to arrive for a tour of the city. Armed with our rain jackets and umbrellas, we walked from the hotel to the cathedral, ... read more
