It was around 7:15 when we left the albergue in Burgos. I pulled a Raresh when departed, leaving my walking sticks leaning against the railing of the cafe across from the albergue and not realizing it until the young lady with us mentioned it. I left my backpack with Raresh while I hurried back to get them. The young couple continued on ahead and we didn't catch for quite a ways. It took quite a while to actually get out of Burgos. We took a short break at a picnic area/playground at a major intersection outside the city. About 10 long kilometers later we entered Tardajos and stopped at the first bar in town for breakfast. A sign said they had fresh gazpacho, and since I needed to get some good food in me to ... read more

We overslept a bit and didn't leave the Albergue until after 7am, and decided to eat breakfast at the only place open in Ages, El Alquemista. After a quick meal of normal tortilla de patatas and coffee, we headed to Atapuerca, only about 2 kilometers away. Atapuerca is a famous World Heritage site where I think they found the remains of the oldest humans. Since we weren't tourists, we had a long day ahead, and it wasn't open that early, we continued on to Cardenuela Riopico, another 6 kilometers along. We made our first stop there at Bocaterio San Miguel. Besides the usual coffee, I couldn't resist a delicious looking cream filled long John. At this point, it was getting close to noon and we still had almost 14 kilometers to go to Burgos, so we ... read more

We left Belorado around 7am, hoping to stop for breakfast in Tosantos, but we didn't see anyplace to eat, so we continued another 3 kilometers to Villambistia, and again nothing on the Camino. There was a sign for a bar off the trail, but Juan had continued on ahead, so I followed, telling myself that I was stopping at the town no matter what, at least for a break. At this point, Juan was ahead out of sight and Raresh and the young couple were behind me out of sight. When I entered the third town of Espinosa del Camino, lo and behold I spotted the welcome sight of a bar right off. Juan had apparently continued on, but I was hungry, so I stopped after verifying that it was the only place. Raresh and ... read more

Sorry it took so long again but we have the same story. We have Alcobacal to leave Portugal and go back to Spain to a place called Plazencia. We made good progress in the beginning but next we were directed to it was called a Roman toad that connected us to the main road at a later time. Well it was a Roman road all right. Most was dirt with boulders of a passed road still laying around. We were in the never never. We also took a wrong turn and finished up at a dead end at a farmhouse. People there were looking out the window wondering what the hell this French car was doing at their place. Managed to turn around and found the right track that took us to the main road. 17 - 24th July 2017 At last we have ventured 'abroad' in Astrid and drove her on and off Le Shuttle with ease. Before leaving Abbey Wood we had taken the train to Charing Cross and visited Stanfords travel book shop to buy a book listing commercial camping sites in France and Spain. There was only one, a huge tome that covers all of Europe, called Camperstop. The assistant said it was the only one she knew so we bought it despite the price of £28. Anyway, once we had chance to read it we realised it was not what we had been looking for. It does not list 'normal' commercial sites but places where motorhomes (not caravans) can stop. Many of the sites are free and a high proportion provide toilets, water fills, grey water ... read more

We spent our last two days relaxing at the caravan in the shade, except for a trip to the beach for a swim to cool off. On tuesday the waves were slightly less fierce than monday so in we went. Suddenly I was knocked backwards and submerged...much to Graham's delight. I"d been wondering whether to wash my hair, so that decided it! ? Wednesday, our last day at Manilva beach and we found there were only two other couples there...set up our chairs walked towards the sea and saw scum and lots of rubbish floating in it....so we'd had our last swim in the med ...on tuesday. Thursday, off to Granada, not looking forward to the high temperatures. Arrived about 12.30 and the owner told us, in broken frenglish we needed hats and long sleeves as ... read more

Spain is a beautiful country with many contrasts what with the busy tourist beaches along the Mediterranean coast to the huge inland mostly barren mountains in the south. There are also acres and acres of olive trees and orange trees. Pete is loving all the variety of olives whilst I have never tasted such sweet oranges! After meeting up with my old primary school friend in Barcelona we then ventured further down the coast and met up with another old high school friend who I had not seen for close on 50 years so it was an amazing catch up and a great evening. Then, last night we had a great old chin wag with a very interesting and fun Scottish couple and it was especially nice for Pete to finally have a decent conversation ... read more

Leaving lovely Porto behind we encountered some brilliant scenery heading out of Portugal. We crossed a bridge 353m above the valley floor and also the Marao Tunnel which is 5.6km long on a road that was only extended a year ago. It was later we learned this to be the most dangerous road in Portugal due to some really steep sections that many trucks had incidents on. Salamanca is a very pretty city. Along the lines of Oxford or Cambridge, it is a University town. Hence the population is fairly young (or are we getting old?). The buildings and streets are incredibly ornate and grand with the buildings having been constructed using cut stone so a much more recent technique. This gives a very attractive style and appearance that has been kept consistent throughout the city ... read more

An easy day yesterday, strolling along the riverbank in the morning before a BBQ steak lunch and relaxing read in the hazy sunshine in the afternoon. Today, guide book out and into Salamanca Old Town, in search of the elusive little frog which sits on the Universidad facade!! We saw the Catedral Vieja and Catedral Nueva, the old, built in the 12th-13th century and the new......16th-18th centuries......so not that new!!!! In the Plaza Mayor, a rather grand cycle race was about to begin and it seemed as if every competitor had brought their mothers, fathers, cousins, grandmothers and great aunts twice removed, to cheer them on their way!!!!! A good Sunday morning outing obviously! We passed the Casa de las Conchas, a mansion adorned with scallop shells which are a symbol of the Order of Santiago-these shells ... read more

After waking at 7am to a thunderstorm, with heavy rain, we have had a long days travelling, over 280 miles, coming through mountain ranges and torrential rain, on occasions. I'm afraid to say we did break into song...."The rain in Spain......" and thank goodness it did!!!! The last 30 miles the temperature climbed from 19-29.5 degrees.....back to normal!!! We are at a site on the river Tormes, quiet and only 3k outside Salamanca, such a pleasant relief from the madness of the last site.....Graham likes the fact that it is called Don Quixote!! If I were a cyclist and, if we'd brought bikes, we could cycle along the riverside, into Salamanca-those who know me will realise what a silly comment that is, as I would probably end up IN the river!! Far safer to get the ... read more
