We left Belorado around 7am, hoping to stop for breakfast in Tosantos, but we didn't see anyplace to eat, so we continued another 3 kilometers to Villambistia, and again nothing on the Camino. There was a sign for a bar off the trail, but Juan had continued on ahead, so I followed, telling myself that I was stopping at the town no matter what, at least for a break. At this point, Juan was ahead out of sight and Raresh and the young couple were behind me out of sight. When I entered the third town of Espinosa del Camino, lo and behold I spotted the welcome sight of a bar right off. Juan had apparently continued on, but I was hungry, so I stopped after verifying that it was the only place. Raresh and the others soon showed up and we ate breakfast together.
After breakfast we walked the 4 kilometers to the next town of Villafranca Montes de Oca, and since the next leg to San Juan de Ortega was a long mistly uphill climb of 12 kilometers with nothing along the way, we stopped briefly for a coffee and a rest, at the San Anton Abad
cafeteria, at the edge of town, with a steep uphill climb in sight. The next section was almost as bad as our first day. There was a rest area at the top, which we took advantage of, then continued on, not expecting anything until San Juan de Ortega.
About 3 or 4 kilometers outside of San Juan de Ortega, we spotted a roadside rest stop with drinks, snacks, and benches to sit on. It was called El Oasis del Camino and took donations. I gave them a euro for a coffee and slice of watermelon. By this time it was about 2pm, so we got back on the trail. Raresh wanted to go to Ages, the town after the normal day stop at San Juan de Ortega, and I had agreed on the condition that we would stop for lunch at San Juan de Ortega, since we wouldn't reach Ages until almost 4pm.
Unfortunately, San Juan de Ortega had only one Albergue and a small bar, which didn't serve tapas or raciones, but I was hungry, so I bought a prepackaged pasta salad and a pastry and wolfed it down while the others took a break. I don't
know how they could keep going on so little, but I enjoyed my quick lunch.
We hadn't been able to make a reservation at Ages, so we continued anyways, hoping for the best. We finally reached Ages and checked out the Albergue El Pajar. They were full, but had an extra building that they offered by donation instead of the 10 euros they charge for the main building. We gladly took them up on it and got a 5 bed room for the 4 of us. We didn't see Juan until later. He had arrived a lot earlier and had a bed in the main building. I paid 5 euros plus 10 for dinner since there were few other places to eat in the small town.
I am going to eat dinner at 8pm, after talking to my wife, so I'll publish the blog now while the connection is good. Tomorrow we should reach Burgos, about 22 kilometers ahead.
