This morning I didn't wake up until 7:30, and Raresh after that, so we got a very late start. After a quick breakfast, we finally left the albergue around 9:30, with a lady from Sweden in tow. Alex and Livija woke up even later and didn't want to be rushed, so we left them behind. The lady from Sweden, Anakaren, didn't know where stuff was, and was just starting the Camino, so we walked with her to the right place and bid her Buen Camino. Since we'd already had some breakfast, we skipped the first town of Trabajo del Camino at 4k and continued on another 4k to the town of La Virgen del Camino for a second breakfast at a little bar I forget the name of, but they had the most delicious homemade pastries. ... read more

Leon Rest Day: I should actually call this blog Bedbug Day. The major portion of my day today was taken up dealing with bedbugs. I woke up this morning and immediately started finding more bites. We let the hospitalero know and it started a frenzy. He put all my clothing in the washer at the highest temperature for 2 hours. I got lucky because after that he told people to go to big laundry mat down the street. He also put Raresh's, Alex's, Livija' s, and my backpacks in plastic bags, sprayed Permethrin, and tied them up. Before we could wash "all" our clothes, we had to go to Carrefour, a local Wal-Mart type place to buy something to wear for the 3 or 4 hours it would take to wash and air dry our ... read more

We left Reliegos around 7:30, heading for Leon for a 2-night stay. I was hoping to get some medicine at a farmacia for my cold which was still lingering. Livija was with us today and stayed with until we entered Puente Villarente where she decided to stay, hoping I think for Alex to catch up. We stopped after about 6 kilometers for breakfast at El Jardin del Camino in Mansilla de las Mulas for breakfast. I had my usual tortilla and coffee, along with a chocolate pastry. We were still sort of on the famed flat meseta, but Leon would be the end of that boredom. Although, I found out that Raresh really enjoyed it. Maybe he liked the ability to forget about everything. Anyway, after breakfast, we continued on, with a new member from Australia. ... read more

Today seemed like the longest and hardest day yet. I know we've done a couple of days over 30 kilometers, and the first day had to be the hardest, but those days were different. The long days before had lots of variety in both terrain and sights. The first day everything was new, the sights were amazing, and my adrenaline was going. Today was none of the above. It was mostly flat, very windy at times, there were no towns for over 13 kilometers, and the scenery was as boring as it gets, except maybe in a desert. But, I made it. We left the albergue in Sahagun a little late at almost 8am. Raresh had talked some to the Romanian cook, and she had offered to fix us breakfast for free. It wasn't anything special, ... read more

So posting to Facebook is way easier than this blog. If you are not already a connection of mine on FB, please send me a friend request and I might accept! ? I've covered about 630km from the beginning of this trek. And what I thought was going to be a pretty easy endeavour has turned out to be a real test of my feet, organizational skills, but mainly mental toughness to finish the Camino despite all the foot ailments and homesickness for real home cooked meal. There is only so much chorizo sausage a guy can handle!!! I'm not going to give a day to day explanation ; however I will post a few pics from along The Way and I hope it gives everyone an idea of what life on the trail is like. ... read more

Last night Raresh and I ate dinner at the Restaurant Los Canarios because they had the best selection of the places we had to choose from. We were joined by David, an American who worked in Las Vegas for 10 years while living in a motor home, saving 70% of his income. He now travels around the U.S. living out of his RV, taking occasional jobs transferring boats. He has sailed from Washington D.C. to Pensacola Florida, and across the Atlantic. He is doing the Camino for one of the same reasons I am... he saw the movie The Way and was hooked. I ate chicken soup (soap de fideo), breaded hake, and a delicious homemade pastry. Raresh and I left the albergue alone around 7:30, heading for Sahagun. Alex and Livija wanted to stay a ... read more

Today was a little different. Originally the 3 of us were going to wait in Carrion de Los Condes for 2 hours, so Alex could catch up. When it was after 9am, he called and said he was 2 1/2 hours away. I didn't really want to wait there that long, and get to a town at least 1 if not 2 short of schedule, and at 4 or 5pm. Raresh suggested I go ahead and try to make sure they have a place to stay. I left Carrion de Los Condes just before 9:30, with 17 kilometers to go. Little did I know that there were absolutely no towns or bars along the way. About 9 boring, flat, featureless kilometers later, I spotted a food truck stop and almost danced for joy... until I found ... read more

First, let me apologize for the photos. I didn't realize the lens was dirty until we had been in Carrion de Los Condes for a while. We left the albergue around 7:30, heading towards our final destination of Carrion de Los Condes, about 20 kilometers away. Since the dining area of the albergue wasn't open and we weren't sure which if any of the four small towns ahead had any place to eat, we stopped at the Cafe Bar Puzzles for a light breakfast. I had my heart set on a delicious looking fruit pastry, but there were only 2 and Raresh and Livija ordered them while I used the bathroom. I ended up with a big glazed doughnut that was pretty good. After a few kilometers on the Camino, we passed through the little town ... read more

This morning we left the albergue rather late at 8:30 or so because Raresh and the young couple wanted to see the sunrise from the castle. Unfortunately, it was rather foggy so I doubt it was anything special. I waited below at the Albergue to watch their backpacks. Not far outside Castrojeriz we began a very long, very steep climb. At the top they had a very welcome rest area. After a fairly long and fairly steep descent, we encountered an old albergue called Albergue San Nicolas, where I gladly used their restroom. This is also where we left Alex, for some unknown reason he stayed there and Livija continued on with us. Also, I am pretty sure the bridge next to the albergue over the Rio Pisuerga is the bridge in the movie The Way ... read more

We left Hornillos del Camino at what has become our usual time of 7:15. It was to be a long, featureless 10 kilometers to our first stop at Hontanas for breakfast at the Albergue Juan de Yepes. After my usual tortilla and coffee, and a shoes-off break, we got back on the Camino. It was another 6 kilometers of nothing to see until we reached the ruins of the 15th century Hospital San Anton. Adjacent to the ruins was a welcome rest area with a friendly guy named Angel, who was offering a nice piece of cold watermelon to any and all who entered. We took a short break, then started the last 2 1/2 kilometers to our destination of Castrojeriz. We had decided to try for the municipal albergue, although they only had 25 beds. ... read more
