Astorga is actually tomorrow but again there are no other options. This morning we woke to rain and it was steady all day. I had already booked bus tickets to La Virgen Del Camino, and as we passed through the suburban and industrial wastelands on the edge of León I felt not the slightest guilt seeing poncho clad pilgrims trudging along in the rain. Been there, done that. I remembered the steep walk bridge over the railway and some of the road out of town; that's why I bought the tickets. We started walking just near the church of the Virgen of the Camino where Mary apparently appeared in the 1500's, and quickly veered away from the road to take the path to Villar de Mazarife. The tracks had been covered in gravel and were very ... read more

Well, many kilometres really, but not a step closer to Santiago . This morning I wandered into town alone as John was having a rare sleep in and it didn't seem fair to wake him. The gardens along the rio Bernesga are very peaceful early; ahhh, the serenity! Reminds me of Bonnie Doon. After a short walk I had breakfast in a lovely cafe and was given a shot of orange juice and a sweet donut, gratis; Cafes of Australia take note! The Museo de León was having a Picasso/Dali exhibition so I paid my €1 and entered the best value exhibition I have been too. After critically examining the artwork, in a nice way, I approached the door thinking it was money well spent. The lady at the desk indicated I needed to go upstairs ... read more

Crossed the Rio Elsa at 7am this morning and set off for León. We arrived at Villarente only to find nothing open, but after a walk along the edge of a busy road, l spotted a panadería and we went and bought some mini croissants for breakfast. The baker told us about a cafe a kilometre away so the caffeine hit occurred there. Dave, our English friend, arrived for his morning cup of tea and commented that now he believed we really walked. He never normally sees us during the day as we leave earlier and walk at a good pace. At all other times he walks into a destination to see John enjoying a beer and me reading the guide. We do walk ! The rest of the walk to León was fairly mundane and ... read more

Today we had a later start, 7am, and had decided to divert off the main route and walk 4kms along a road to reach El Burgo Ranero for breakfast. It was still dark for the first hour but the track was either quiet road or good gravel paths. After yet another tortilla meal (for me), we walked an uninterrupted 13kms to Reliegos, a small village 7kms from our destination. The early morning light reflected on the hay stubble was lovely and lifted my spirits as another day commenced on the Camino. The scenery was mainly fields of harvested hay or cornfields that dotted the landscape for much of the day. The occasional ruin, no not me, broke up the monotony, as did conversations with others along the way. I was talking to a couple from New ... read more

We passed through Sahagun today, but again the village we are in is to remote to rate on this site; pop.200. Last night I had Hamburger de la Casa for dinner and , served with chips, it was a nice change from the 'pilgrims menu' and probably just as nutritious . We chatted with a Canadian woman who was a cleric with the Canadian United Churches and a young man from Oregon who was a music teacher but had just graduated as a conductor and baritone. It's amazing the diverse range of people who cross our paths each day and it helps shift you out of the small world view that we often hold; there's a lot to see out there! We started walking at about 6.40am this morning, it was pitch black but the stars ... read more

We have arrived in Terradillos de Templarios after a long walk across the Meseta. No breakfast, or opportunity for food for the first 17kms; nuthin' ! The walk was along nice paths with little to see except stubble and some trees in the distance. I chatted to Koreans, Canadians, and avoided some loud Australians, as I walked along today . My new boots are great and are the most comfortable Bestards I've ever worn; that's not a typo, they are Bestards. I won't go on too much today as the Internet is poor and I'm using what little is left of my own data. Dinner is here tonight and tomorrow we head to Calzadilla de Los Hermanillos, 27 kms away. A few pics tell a little more, adios Amigos. León on Monday; very well deserved.... read more

Well, this morning didn't go to plan. Last night we had a great meal of garlic soup and paella at the hotel as part of the Alburgue deal, and spent a funny night with 2 Italian sisters, 3 Germans, a strange Spanish woman, an irishman called Shaun, with us completing the set. Wine flowed freely and shots of the local grappa were supplied by the hotel. At about nine I decided to go to sort out my stuff, tape up my feet, and get an early night. I was about to jump into bed when I spotted the young German guy studying something on his blanket; bed bugs !! He caught it and killed it but it's not the last thing you need to see before bed. What can you do, just hope for the best. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Castrojeriz October 4th 2016

After a very sleepless night, I arose at 6am, did the bathroom thing, and went down to breakfast. The options were toast/ jam/ muesli/small cakes/ very bad coffee ( made the night before). I settled on small cake/ toast with jam/ very bad coffee. I needed this as I was taking my Vitamin I tablet and it requires food. We headed out at 7.15 onto the poorly lit street until we reached pitch black on the edge of town. The headlamp was only barely working ( it was cheap!) so we brailled our way up the track using our feet, taking extra care for signs at any fork in the road. As daylight arrived, the day opened out into lovely honey coloured fields, and paths of a quality we hadn't experienced before. The first 10 kilometres ... read more

We are not really in Castrojeriz but the little village of Hornillos del Camino doesn't rate on this sites map. It has a population of 68, well , 70 if you include John and me, and a Main Street . I'm sure you could walk the length of town in 5 minutes. We started walking at 6.35am and the first 3.9 kms were in fair light, passing through suburbs and parks until we reached tracks running along fields of sad looking sunflowers ready for harvesting, eventually leading to roads and underpasses with major highways overhead. The first leg was 12 kms without a break to a village called Tarjados, where we had coffee and tortilla before heading to Rabé de las Calzados, 2 kms away. Up until now the walking was flat but we started climbing ... read more

Today I slept in until 8am, read emails and the papers until 9, and then showered, washed clothes, sorted out my feet( again! I think they are improving slowly), and went for breakfast at the cafe across the bridge. I skyped Andrew and Sue; Tim must have been out. Their Wi Fi is great so I took the opportunity to download some pics. John joined me at about 11am and we wandered around all day looking for places of interest that we never found. It's a lovely day and I think we walked around for 4 hours. Tomorrow is only 21kms but we will need to be early to book into our Alburgue of choice. We stayed at El Alfar 2 years ago and it was great. It had a real family atmosphere and a nice ... read more
