Over 3 hours at the bus stop. Not exactly fun time. We did the walk pretty easily, pushed ourselves along to get there with time to spare as our last host had checked the timetables and had said the bus left at 1:46. We saw a bus come and go (just) at about 12:45 whilst we were having an icy pole so I think the host’s research was not correct. Anyway from what I can work out the next bus is just after 4 and if that doesn’t work out there’s one a little after 6. Today’s walk climbed steeply from the the start and got us to our highest point for quite a few days. The scenery remains spectacular, with soaring mountains, steep sided gorges, streams and waterfalls dotted along the trail and the ever ... read more
Probably 10 minutes into the day’s walk. All uphill.
But the views make the uphill plod worth it.
Lots of uphill today, 900 m elevation gain.

Apparently we are no longer in the Upper Carniola region. But until I stumble upon an answer as to what region we are really in that will do. I like the walk that commences and finishes with a little train trip. That‘s a little in time not little in train. In fact the locomotives here are super size. I suppose the gradient and conditions dictate that size is important here but they did the trick for us for sure. The morning train from Bohinj Bistrica was the reverse trip of yesterday’s and we got what we expected. A short trip through the tunnel that lasted 7 minutes and returned us to the destination that had taken us 6 and bit hours to walk the day before. The afternoon train we made with no time to spare ... read more

It’s déjà vu all over again. We are back at the Eco Hotel in Bohinj again. Yeh we walked but we caught the train back here. Took us almost 7 hours of slog to get there and 10 minutes via a tunnel to return! But that’s no grumble as it is pretty good here. We are about to go for a swim in what looks like a very attractive outdoor pool and I’ve just had a cold lager in the shower (well they said not to drink the water at the hotel as a result of the recent flooding). Today was officially described as a difficult day and although it was only 7 hours it was quite tough. Ascents and descents were tough and at times the track was that rock strewn obstacle course that I ... read more

Day nineteen. 2023. I love Bled. (I may not have made this clear enough 😂) This morning was a visit somewhere new, a mini zoo. I'm not sure it was what you might expect of a zoo but it had snakes (quite terrifying as they stared at you) lizards (see above) the biggest free roaming grey parrot who clicked and spoke to you (in English) but equally looked like one wrong move and it would peck your eyes out, and all manner of terrapins. They had an insect area, the underside of a giant stick insect will make up all my nightmares from now on, they had fish (well, one tank anyway) chinchillas, hamsters, rabbits (not entirely sure if the small flurries and insects were there as potential food for the reptiles mind you but we'll ... read more

You win some, you lose some. Very easy day of walking (win), big day of washing (lose). Only 4 hours or so and over some very friendly terrain makes this an easy day for walkers. Met 2 Australians (from Dunkeld) and the same 4 Swiss that were at the Sports Hotel 2 nights back. They’re greeting ’hello Melbourne’ must be for us. All very cheery because for everyone this is an easy day. Julie has found some way for the app to speak to her so navigation errors are becoming fewer and fewer (is good but not perfect) although I am constantly tricked thinking it’s someone coming from behind. Again the signage is excellent and after walking the stage you realize it could probably be done without the app. That’s almost sacrilegious saying that in this ... read more
The 4 brave men, first to climb Triglav. That’s Triglav in the far distance over the right shoulder.
Bohinj Lake, just beautiful.
I’ve been photobombed!

Day 16 2023, Tuesday. A little less sun but hey, it's still paradise. After clearing out the moths from the bathroom, we headed out to the tourist train. Yes, we've done it before but a trip to Bled really isn't a trip without a slow paced, diesel fume filled chug around the lake. Teeth chatteringly bumpy in places thanks to the storms, we took in the new fences and old haunts before getting back to where we started. On a hunt for bled cake we stopped at the shop but there was none so we made do with a couple of slabs of something Slovene (and done ice tea, it's really fabulous) to take back for lunch. Next was swimming. It should have been golf but with no nearby parking, we went to the beach. The ... read more

Wow! Bohinj is breathtakingly beautiful. It is also breathtaking getting here. Officially described as moderate the walk is tough and upon reaching the sort of final destination our hotel was a further 2km away. Probably worse mentally than physically but… The receptionist at the hotel was suitably impressed that we had walked so far and still looked human enough to allow in. She was very quick to point out that our booking included time in the wellness and spa centre. Unfortunately there no knee transplant facility here which is something that may assist. Anyway getting here. The route is well signed although the app that comes with the Juliana Trail is also super useful. Bluey and Bingo were right when they told ‘grandpa’ that ‘there’s an app for that’. The signs are on posts, pillars, pylons, ... read more

And at times shared with other walking trails.
But always welcome.

day 15, 2023, Monday, perfect day. A lazy morning in the apartment have us time to watch the football and take in the fabulous weather. Seth and I took a short walk to the shop to get a few supplies, mostly chicken crisps, the mother of all crisps and only available here. We were very restrained, only getting seven packets this time (more to come though) A quick lunch and we made our way back out into the glorious sunshine, Seth and Ash for a swim, me for a sit. After a there and back stroll we settled on a spot. Ash and Seth swam with the ducks and the fish, I listened to all the various nationalities , read my book and took in the fabulous wonderful perfect view. Once they got our, it ... read more

Days 13 and 14. Yesterday was a move across Austria from the middle of nowhere to less the middle of nowhere. In the pouring rain we set off around winding, hilly and very wet roads eventually ending up in Eben am pongau (still no pinging). The plan had been to go to a nearby swimming lake but given the fourteen degree, pouring rain with chances of thunder weather, an outdoor swimming lake seemed.... unappealing. We'd found a huge indoor pool complex but hadn't really appreciated that everyone within a hundred mile radius on a wet Saturday had found the same thing..... Not wanting to queue and get wet before we'd even started, plans altered and we shopped (I was very restrained around the OVO products) and checked in at our place for the night, heading back ... read more

What a stunning country! Our first time in this wooded, green country of just over two million inhabitants dissected by rivers and winding roads. We actually stayed first just over the border from Croatia in Lovsin Estate. The river Kupa bordered the estate and the country. We had oodles of space as the major European countries had not yet commenced school holidays so it was relatively quiet. Swimming was great above the weir and we rented a canoe and paddled gently upstream to another camping spot we were glad we had not found! We met a delightful young couple Emma and Gregor who were holidaying from Celje with their two young daughters whose shyness prevented them from practising their English. The adults, however, discussed the country, its culture, customs and politics for many hours. As a ... read more
