Today we slept in as my phone did not adjust it's time, and and the alarm was hours away from going off; I think it was a soviet plot personally. We had breakfast at Zoom Zoom, an interesting little cafe just around the corner from us. It was actually about 15 minutes away but I think I'm adjusting to the Tim and Natalia Timezone where everything is underestimated, to lull you into a false sense of security. After breakfast we walked through a few backstreets and went to a local market which no tourist would normally visit. It sold all the things real Russians needed at the right price. It was like busy Asian market meets mafia sort of tone and I'm sure the roaming security guards were there for a purpose. This was a very ... read more

Hi Everyone!!! So today we had no Honcho so first day alone in Saint Petersburg, After a good nights sleep (where I did not snore or talk in my sleep) we headed into the city. Our plan was to head to the Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo which are palace estates and castles built as summer homes, however, trying to understand where the buses were and which one to get was a minefield so after a walk down we decided to change our plans. We went to the Russian museum which shows the history of Russia including all their old and new areas, so this covered all the different religions as well. It was interesting but not really our cup of tea!! We then looked at the Stroganov Palace and the Kazan Cathedral which are very old, ... read more

Hi All, First real blog on where we are and what we are up to. So we flew out this morning at 9am after staying in the worst hotel location ever, planes going over us that were shaking the bed it was that close, still they stopped at midnight!!! The flight was good only three hours with BA, not free booze so was very disappointed!!! lol When arriving in Russia we ended up getting a random bus (not the ones on the paperwork) into Moskovskaya then met an English couple who were as lost as we were. But together we managed to find the metro station together. They are doing the vodka train like us but different dates. Once on the metro we got to Mayakovskaya which is on the Nevsky Prospect which is the main ... read more

Our flight home from St Petersburg was scheduled after midnight Monday, in fact at 01:15 am Tuesday. The bus took those of us leaving Russia today (ie those not staying the extra two days) directly from dinner to the airport. We got to the airport with loads of time to spare, before El Al checkin was open although they were finally setting up. That was a good job too because their security was extra secure since our bags had been on the bus with the driver all day. Eventually we got through and Don and I made our way to the lounge where Michael was working hard (not to be confused with hardly working). At last our flight was called and we were off. After a very non-eventful flight and even some sleep, we landed at ... read more

The touring was supposed to start at midday as some of us had to pack and prepare for our journey home. A majority of the group had chosen to stay for an extra couple of days. Yet at breakfast it became clear that one or two people had not had enough touring and wanted to cram more in. So a harassed Michael managed to contact Natasha and the bus came half an hour early. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Our first stop was to take photos of the Grand Choral synagogue. It is true to say that many stayed in the gift shop checking out the beautifully crafted ceramics by a Russian artist, whose name escapes me. ... read more

Welcome to the incredible Catherine Palace and Park in Pushkin, about 25 km southeast of St Petersburg. This was clearly one of the most impressive sightseeing locations on our Russian tour. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Another day of travelling to another palace! This time to Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin). The town was founded in 1711 as a royal residence. It was given the status of a town in 1808. The first railway in Russia was opened in 1837 connecting Tsarskoye Selo to St. Petersburg. After the October Revolution the town was renamed Detskoye Selo (Children's Village). Then in 1937 it was renamed Pushkin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the popular Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin. . . ... read more

Shabbat could be summed up in a few words: service in the hotel, breakfast, service in the big synagogue (for those unlike me who wanted to attend), lunch at the Golden Cafe, sleep, rest, seudah (late afternoon meal) at the Golden Cafe and Havdalah. So I will use this space to write about the history of the Jews in Russia and particularly St Petersburg and then describe our party! In 1703 the Jews started arriving in the St Petersburg region from distant lands. They were conversos - Jews who had been forced to convert to Christianity to avoid persecution. They were accepted into society. For example the first chief of police was a Jew called Otto de Vere. However, the first sign of anti-Semitism came in 1738 when Alexander Voznitzin became disillusioned with the Russian Orthodox ... read more

The day started sadly. David had not been able to join the tour as his mother had taken a turn for the worse. Jill had come on the tour by herself but she left first thing in the morning to go back to Israel in the event that her mother-in-law passed away and was flown from the USA to Israel for burial. And on a happier note, after breakfast we got on the bus and wished Penina a happy birthday in the usual Trekkers way - with a song of course. Penina very kindly gave out goody bags, party bags with all sorts of sweets, bubbles and balloons. This was whilst driving to the hovercraft pier as we were to take the hydrofoil to the Peterhof Palace. We had a half hour wait for the hovercraft ... read more

Today Natasha was well enough to be our guide as scheduled. She arrived at the hotel to take us on a very good tour of what, to my mind, is one of the most impressive museums in the world - The Hermitage. The coach took us to St Isaac's square and we walked along the river via Senate Square to see a statue of Peter the Great on a horse with a snake sneaking up the rear of the horse. This square is famous because in 1825 there was an uprising called the Decembrists uprising. This was a secret society that wanted to reform the monarchy and have a constitutional monarchy. In 1825 Alexander I died in mysterious circumstances. His brother Nicholas I succeeded him. It was thought that this was an opportune moment for the ... read more

Up at the crack of dawn and down to breakfast at 6:15am as we had to leave to get to Moscow airport for our 10am plane to St Petersburg. We arrived with plenty of time to spare. I needed to go to the loo which was a long walk from the check-in desks and then down a staircase and finally the ladies' queue. What had been an urgency soon turned into an emergency. But I made it! We checked in last amongst our group. But as there were still some waiting ahead of us I didn't really hold up anyone. There was a shortage of seats in the departure area, once we had gone through security. So a large number of our group commandeered a few tables in the cafe. We tried to find a couple ... read more
