R: So many months ago, I promised I would start blogging our experiences in Russia and on the trans-Siberian railway. It has been several months. If you are still interested, and I have kept you waiting.... I'm sorry. Anyway. I will recreate these memories from notes I took at the time. This trip was a bit different for us, we were travelling as a four. Clare and Richard (Cate's parents) were with us too, the idea being that Richard and I continued on the trans-Siberian, while Clare and Cate came home at the end of half term. Lots of people have asked if Cate was annoyed that we continued on the journey without her. The answer is, no, she did not want to spend 7 days couped up on a train with me or her Dad. ... read more

Putin-faced matryoshkas, golden onion-domed churches, and Hermitage artwork galore. One day in Russia, why not? That’s what I thought. Since I was living in Estonia this year we thought that we might as well take advantage of the opportunity. St. Peter’s Line cruises offers a trip that enables tourists to visit St. Petersburg for one day without a visa. So, we took it as an experiment to get a small glimpse of Russia and life on the cruise boat for two days. I would say ‘thumbs up’ to the experience of St. Petersburg but I would recommend other options for getting there and maximizing your 72 hours of visa-free time. Our itinerary was to take the Silja Europa boat (Tallink company) out of Tallinn at 12:30pm on Saturday to Helsinki. The, we left Helsinki on the ... read more

The cost of dining / drink is substantially cheaper than in UK or France. There are pigs on the street down from our hotel, inviting you in their establishment! But we've been using travel guides and budget as we set off each night to find a restaurant ........and we've realised the ones we've chosen are Georgian, although we are clearly in Russia just now. Georgian cuisine is highly valued here in St Petersburg. Frikadelki on Griboyedov Canal Embankment, and Suliko on Kazanskaya St have been the best. We always seem to be sat in comfortable low carver chairs at quite high tables. The resultant posture would aid the practice of eating with chopsticks ....... although that hasn't been a desire or offer when eating Georgian food. It may be a coincidence or perhaps it is a culturally ... read more

Yesterday, second Hermitage day we went first to see the Rembrandts in the Winter Palace. Awe inspiring, such detailed work, thoughtful faces, visual feasts. And then there was Van Dyck and scores of wonderful Dutch , de Hooch and OTT Rubens! We thought to go and see the Da Vinci in the Italian section but the gallery was filled with hordes of Japanese tours all struggling to take a shot of it. We struggled to escape. We returned to the Staff Building for lunch and to see some more of the galleries there. It is so peaceful and cool there, compared to the Winter Palace which is hot, stuffy and crammed with us tourists. There was. Faberge gallery which displayed objects manufactured by Faberge for the army in WWI.- mess tins, boilers, etc very beautifully made. ... read more

I'm intrigued by the over-specified gauge of tube for the St Petersburg down pipes, or as we like to call them: 'spoots'. I haven't measured them, but I reckon they must be 250mm in diameter, standard, on pretty much every building in the centre of town. They're made of light galvanised tin. Many are characteristically 'bashed in' on the bottom two metres...... I suppose their substantial size makes them a pleasing target for a kick from a drunken Doc Martin wearer...... Our current theory for the design brief is that when snow melts in the spring there'll be need for a quick evacuation of excess water to stop leaks through tin roofs. Or perhaps there's been a very successful gutter salesperson maintaining a market for big pipes 'cos there's more profit in them for the manufacturer? ... read more

Today was the first Hermitage day for us With our two day online Hermitage tickets. the Hermitage is like an unfathomable labyrinth of treasures of art. The more you see the more there is to see. Every turning gives new choices of which room to turn to next. Luckily, as we both wanted to see the Impressionists rooms first we spotted a sign saying that they were in the Admiralty building across the square from the Winter Palace so we made our way there for our first treat. I have uploaded a few of the treats.... read more

Day 2 St Petersburg The Romanov tears from heaven have been wiped away and today the sun is shining. The Hotel Rachmaninov has delivered a fullsome breakfast. Porridge is served in a pot in its own tartan jacket, hot water is from a 21st century samova ........ cheese, ham, eggs and salami kiss croissants, apples, granola with honey and yoghurt. And, after research, it turns out that Rachmaninov, his good self, scaled the same steps to the 2nd floor as we did last night. In 1883 he lived in a flat in this block whilst he was studying at St Petersburg Conservatoire ........ an establishment he entered at the age of ten! As we chomped on the first meal of the day we decided to walk a circular route to get an overview of the River ... read more

Today we woke to big blue sky and sun streaming through the window - lovely after yesterday's grey rain. Breakfast was in the quirky lounge with chairs and other furniture of mixed Victorian/ regency design. Some ornate gilding, carving, padding, coverings. Plus scattering of musical instruments and other objects... Plus a baby grand piano to be played if you know how! After breakfast we went out to wander, down Nevsky Prospect towards the Hermitage - which we came on unexpectedly having passed many other grand buildings. St Petersburg is full of grand buildings. We decided not to go in to the Hermitage today, but to wander further across the river Neva to the Vasilevsky Island. Wonderful views across the water to the hermitage as we walked. We had coffee from a stall which sold Ken a ... read more

Here we are in rainy St Petersburg, all went smoothly from the airport till we stepped out of the metro at Nevsky Prospect. Then which way to go? Of course we set off on the increasing rain in the wrong direction.... It took sometime and map perusal on street corners to right ourselves. But we did .....and finally found ourselves in the historic Art Hotel Rachmaninov where the said composer lived at some point. Lovely old building with artists pictures on the doors of every room. Beautiful receptionist apologised for our long delay in waiting to sign in (there was a group carping on and on about something) and brought us complimentary coffee to compensate. Hotel kitted out for pre revolution look. Very well done. But it's raining quite a lot and my suitcase wheels have ... read more
