I went to Sestroretsk (the name can be rendered as ‘the City on the Sister River’) with a friend of mine, Igor, who came from Birsk to St. Petersburg for a week. From the administrative viewpoint, Sestroretsk is a part of the city of St. Petersburg, its Kurortny District. It is a well-known climatic resort on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. The city is made up of six districts, namely Gorskaya, Alexandrovskaya, Takhovka, Razliv, Kurort, and Dyuny. It can be reached easily from Finland Railway Station (about 45 minutes on commuter train) or by buses (I think from Chernaya Rechka or Staraya Derevnya metro station). Sestroretsk is among the few remaining places in the vicinity of Petersburg which I haven’t visited. The city is worthy of a single-day visit or perhaps longer if the ... read more

Hey everyone I am going to go ahead and throw in a couple photos this time. Hope you all enjoy. So not really a lot to say. More museums, more festivals, more crazy Russian people! So small feature of this city. Everyone smokes, well basically everyone, and they don't think it's worth investing in ash trays. At the same time they really don't like to litter. The result? Many many many trashcan fires. I basically see one every day, maybe more.... read more

On the first days of February 2015, I had a short visit to St. Petersburg, cultural capital of Russia. As it was a trade show where I had to work everyday. The heat was below zero and city was covered with snow at all. So, I didn't really have chance to behave as a tourist. There was just one direct flight to Istanbul which is by Turkish Airlines. That usually makes me sad as I have to wait for that flight for some extra hours, mostly a half day. But this time, my last day in St. Petersburg, I thought I was lucky that the only flight was on the afternoon. I had to wait till 4pm. Finally I had a half day in city which I used to visit Grand Maket Russia, the marvelous model ... read more

So it’s been a while hasn’t it? Okay where to start? I guess I should do kind of a day in the life. So I wake up at 7:30ish, which is something awful but oh well. After that I take either the bus or the metro. So some fun stuff has happened on both in the morning. On the metro I was going just a few stops and this lady came onto the train selling passports and other documents. It was kind of tempting but also probably a sting so I just did nothing. Someone did buy a passport though so that’s something. The buses and the metros are both super clean, and something like 40 cents a ride. Well that’s fine except having that much change isn’t always guaranteed and the women on the bus ... read more

Hey hey hey, so it has probably been too long since my last update so there is plenty to cover. Okay first and foremost, last Sunday I went to the Hermitage museum on a tour with my group. It might of actually bee the coolest and oldest building I have ever been inside. Well actually it is made up of several buildings, one of which is the winter palace the former home of the Czar and his family. Which means I got to see the throne room which was insane. Basically everything was leafed with gold. Eventually we got to the art gallery and while I am definitely not a connoisseur I was still really something to behold. The museum has the largest collect of Rembrandt works in the world and many many works by other ... read more

Okay with a few days under my belt there is a little more to tell than last time. The only question is where to start. I guess it would work to kind of go through the progression of average day so far. Well I have been waking up around 6 or seven if I can make it that far, the time difference is still kind of a problem but less and less every day. Then I kill a few hours until nine which is when I take the bus to Smolney which is a building that was commissioned by the daughter of Peter the Great to be a convent but is now a branch of the university. The building is great, nothing much to say about the inside but the outside is spectacular. Speaking of spectacular ... read more

Hey everyone, its been an odd couple of days to say the least! I just got to my host's home and am getting settled. I spent the first two days here at a really nice hotel getting used to the climate and figuring out the do's and don'ts. Not too much to share at this point but we went on a bus tour of the city and I have to say that as you get closer and closer to the city center everything becomes really extraordinary. Here's hoping everything stays great for the next four months.... read more

Another 9am start, breakfast at Zoom Zoom, and we made our way to the underground railway. I've never travelled so deep on an escalator, the ride taking a good 5 minutes. Apparently these subways are designed to double as nuclear shelters in case of an attack. Our destination was the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, the most revered Greek Orthodox Church in Russia. As you enter you pass the cemetery where many of Russia's cultural greats are buried. Only Christians are allowed in this cemetery and outside the front of the Cathedral there is another burial ground created for non Christians, atheists, and communists. It is interesting to read the headstones as most seem to be associated with the Red Army and died in the 1940s or before. As we entered the Cathedral a service was being held ... read more

Today we had breakfast at a new cafe on the way to the Hermitage so as not to waste time back tracking. We joined the queue and waited in the chilly wind that was circling the Hermitage courtyard. School children and students gain free entry and many groups of small children were ushered through to waiting tour guides who gave talks geared to their understanding and needs. The Hermitage is the oldest and largest museum in the world. Catherine the Great started it in 1764 as a private collection and it wasn't until 1852 that it was open to the public. It sits along the Palace Embankment on the River Neva and incorporates 6 buildings, including the Winter Palace which was home to the Imperial family for years. Catherine acquired many full collections as well as ... read more

We gathered at 7am to have breakfast in order to catch a taxi to the Prague Airport at 7.30. The driver was on time and for the sum of about $30, he took us to the airport. Passing through customs and security for Russia, you are scanned twice, your passport is looked at thoroughly, Tim was asked a few questions because of his previous visits, your photo is taken and then .......welcome! The flight was quite rough as we were on a small airbus and hit a lot of turbulence. This aircraft had the least leg room I've ever experienced and my knees touched the seat in front. The food was a drink and a chicken roll wrapped in cling wrap. As we touched down, there was a round of applause for the crew, which almost ... read more
