St Petersburg Russia 17 to 21 August 2014 After a 1 1/2 hour border stop from Narva, Estonia , into Russia, plus the purchasing of 3rd party insurance on the Russian side, we were on our way to St Petersburg. We were really looking forward to this part of our journey. With no maps on the GPS of Russia (we were unsuccessful at down loading our purchased Russian maps for our Garmen GPS in Estonia due to poor internet connection), very basic paper map and my phone with Google maps, we headed east. We had the name of a camp site about 28km from the CBD, so fingers crossed. The roads weren't too bad. We had read so much about the poor roads, but we could also see that there had been a lot of road ... read more

Palaces, gold, Tsars, Russian Orthodox Churches, Fortresses, malachite, jasper, metros, marble, meat pies, parks, good luck charms, weddings, Faberge, Lamborghini, Vladimir, Natalia, gold, Gold, GOLD and GOLD– these are a few of the words that come to mind when we start to think about our time in St. Petersburg, Russia. With the political situation the way it is we consider ourselves quite luckily we were able to make it to St. Petersburg this season. Unfortunately with what has been in the news recently we are concerned for many and what the impact will be on those that are dependent on tourism to this amazing city. We have been talking about writing this blog for almost two months now and how difficult it is going to be. There are three reasons for this. First, we were there ... read more

First please accept our apologizes for being so out of touch on our blog. We have been moving quite quickly through the Baltic visiting numerous countries which has been wonderful. We have been seeing lots of great places, enjoying our time with the others that are on the OCC Baltic Rally with us, have had a few pleasant evenings anchoring out, have been in marinas with not the best of wi-fi connections or none at all and this has all brought us to the the present. We have lots to update you with and loads of photos to sort through. We just wanted to let you know that we made it to St. Petersburg and the summer weather has made it here as well! The last couple of days we have had beautiful sunny days and ... read more

Ironically, the country that was the scariest to enter was the one I really didn't want to leave, so waking up on the final day of our time in Saint Petersburg was pretty sad. On our third day we would leave the city centre of Saint Petersburg and visit the Peterhof Palace and its gardens, which were beautiful, and the water features and pumps have not changed since the days in which they were built! Before we got there, we took a few stops on the way associated with the old city of Leningrad. We went to see a memorial of the Siege of Leningrad, with the '900 days' representing the number of days between 1941 and 1944 costing the lives of some 1 million city people. It was quite interesting to see a different perspective ... read more

The sleep after the boat trip wasn't the best.... getting to bed at 4 in the morning and having to be up at 8 wasn't easy... but we thrived on the motto that, WE'RE IN RUSSIA, and sleep will just have to wait. Plus, today was the day that we would visit the Hermitage Museum, and most excitingly for me; the Winter Palace!!!! For a history student who has studied the Russian Revolution quite a few times, seeing where sh*t kicked off in 1917 was awesome. The Winter Palace, as well as the majority of architecture in Saint Petersburg made huge statements, the buildings were massive and pastel colours seemed to be a favourite trend. After seeing the Winter Palace, we continued through the Hermitage Museum (which was 5 interlinked buildings each containing different elements), and ... read more

We spent 3 days in St. Petersburg and so much happened that its easier to split it into 3 days. We kept having to remind ourselves, that.. WE'RE IN RUSSIA. The country I was the most apprehensive about was met with very different expectations. It was pretty daunting at first, our tour guide told us that we had to fill in an extra slip of paper to hand in at boarding control, we were told don't get it wrong! Being that one person that usually gets something wrong made me quite nervous! But it was crazy, we had to underline our purpose of entry (in our case, tourism) and if we lost our departure card, well, we'd be stuck in Russia.. Thankfully though, the hostel looked after our passports overnight. 'Look after' was basically, 'we'll keep ... read more

St. Petersburg (Catherine’s Palace) to Tsarskoye Selo, Russia--Wednesday, May 28, 2015 Rainy skies and cool. Once we got underway for our tour, our guide for this trip talked the whole way through and then out of the City. She pointed out various buildings that we passed—government offices, parks, memorials, newer high rise apartments, Soviet-style housing, etc. She also talked about prices for rents, usual income for a family, the education system, and various historical facts associated with St. Pete. The Catherine Palace is located about 25km southwest of St. Pete, very near the Palace of Peter the Great, and was used by the tsars as a summer residence. The Palace built in 1752, is painted a bright blue with gold and white trim in a very flamboyant rococo style. More than 100 grams of gold were ... read more

Saint Petersburg, Russia--Tuesday, May 27, 2014 Grey and rainy. We followed the crowd to participate in the regular routine for getting off the ship in this port: swipe ID card and walk down the ramp, walk the 2 blocks down the pier to the customs building, show our passport and tour tickets to the sullen Russian clerks, walk to the street and board the bus. Today we are heading to the newly opened Faberge Museum. Prior to this, the collection of 200 beautiful Faberge objects, including 9 of the fabulous Imperial Easter Eggs, were owned by Malcolm Forbes. He sold it in 2004 for 100 million to a Russian multi-millionaire/entrepreneur who added them to his collection. He was finally able to completely rebuild a palace that had just opened in April. The 4000 objects are now ... read more

St Petersburg, Russia—Monday, May 26, 2014 Before we left home, Valerie and I had thoroughly studied the tour offerings for this port for 3 reasons. 1) We knew that we could only leave the ship without purchasing a Russian visa ($169 each and hassle) if we were with a sanctioned tour group; 2) We had spent several days in St. Petersburg before and wanted to now see something we hadn’t seen before; 3) We wanted to make sure we had tickets for tours we did want to see or we would be stuck on the ship for 3 days, if the tours were sold out. We woke up on Monday morning with the ship docked right downtown with a glorious view of the city and its monuments and church spires. Our first tour wasn’t scheduled until ... read more

So I have been incredibly terrible in adding blog posts and I am becoming dangerously close to forgetting everything that happened in Russia so I'm now just going to create a list of stuff that happened. 6 May St Petersburg: The Germans went out on their own this day so the girls went to the State Hermitage for the morning. We lost Fairlie in the morning which was quite stressful: the queues were huge and she went away to see if she could buy from a machine, then she completely disappeared. Thankfully she reappeared just as we had got to the front of the queue - there's a cheeky hour wasted. The State Hermitage was absolutely massive, and some of the art was amazing. There was also a mummy in the Egyptian section which was completely ... read more
