It was a fast train from Moscow to Saint Petersburg (especially compared to our 4 days on the Trans Siberian) we did the approximately 900kms in just under 4 hours. It was a smooth ride across more flat Russian countryside. We were booked into a small boutique hotel that had been newly renovated so was very comfortable and quiet after the throbbing masses of the Moscow hotel. The next day our guide meet us for another 16km long walk around the sights of Saint Petersburg. We stopped for coffee along the way and were served large coffees in soup bowls which kept us firing for the rest of the day. The churches and buildings along the main stretch of the city were magnificent again and we spent the morning strolling through these stunning buildings. The government ... read more

Check out the video of Russia which I uploaded. Russia in 30 seconds. click here for the video. Password is warta App tip. '1 second everyday'. Take a short video every day, select one second in this all and then stitch weeks months or the whole year together. That's how the attached video was done.. Great fun and it's amazing how much you can see in a second. Saint Petersburg must be the most visited city in Russia judging by the masses of tourists we saw. What a difference to the first few Russian cities we visited where we got excited when we saw another tourist. We understood why everyone is here once we explored the city. Given that the Germans shelled the city for over 800 days during the second world war it is surprising ... read more

St Petersburg, well nothing like we expected! I know I am going to bore you with photos and text but so hard to condense what we saw in just two days! Opulence, opulence! Glitz, gold and oozing money but we know there are very poor people here too! Did not know how we would go, booked a small private tour with a company who said they get Visa waivers but all good. The ship said all guests who do their tours get a visa waiver but all others have to get their own private visa before leaving Australia, again Princess is Princess trying to rip us, their tour was $1200 for two for two full days in St Petersburg and Alla Tours were $740 for the same and more sights and the more tours you book ... read more

Me voila parti !

Arrivés à Saint-Pétersbourg, on avait ... read more

This entry introduces you to four interesting sights in the city of St. Petersburg and its environs: the Pulkovo Observatory Museum, the Sablino cave, the Museum of City Electric Transport and the Museum of Railroad Vehicles. On September 24th I and my wife went on an excursion to the Pulkovo Observatory. I had bought the tickets via an excursion website in advance. The decision to visit the observatory came after we had watched a couple of popular scientific films about the Universe, the Sun, and our planet. Those topics are unbearably interesting and thought-provoking. Individual persons will not be able to visit the museum (not without a guide), I’m afraid. But I think it is possible to do so by paying the full price as for a group. We first went to Moskovskaya metro station and ... read more

Distance from Tallinn to St Petersburg = 160 nautical miles Total distance travelled = 798 nautical miles Today's comedy German word (and my favourite): Botschafter. A Botschaft is an Embassy. The Ambassador is known as the Botschafter!! Today we have booked an organised tour. The only organised tour of the trip as in Russia this makes life so much simpler. If we were to do our own thing, we would have needed to have obtained a Russian Visa. As these cost around £80 each, it is cheaper to pay for an excursion. In that way, you are included on the ships generic visa. The organisation of the tours can be a little chaotic at times, being give a time and a meeting place then made to wait ½ hour whilst every tour departs except yours!! On ... read more

26 June. Today we had another treat in store, the Summer Palace of Peter the Great or Peterhof outside the city. More lavish grandeur inside the palace and the gardens were magnificent, with fountains everywhere as Peter loved fountains and water features. So much gold everywhere too, it was used extensively in most palaces, cathedrals and on domes in St P and also in Moscow. By this stage we were getting quite blasé about the grandeur of the Tsars, but it is impressive. After the tour, Blu was very happy as we came across a craft beer restaurant. We tried a great porter and had mussels which were small compared to NZ but very good. Wandered around for a while, tried out the metro to visit a monastery across town, St P also had very smart ... read more
