I'm afraid that the delay between posts may mean that the details from this time may be fuzzy but I'm trying my best to recall everything. If only I were more like Adrian Mole. Curses. The third day of my travels was also the day on which I met the Vodkatrain group, i.e. my travel companions for the next three weeks. So I woke up late (again) and moved to the hostel that the tour company had chosen, namely Red House (Jimi Hendrix themed because Russia). This was just the other end of Nevskiy Prospekt and was not much further than walking to the bus stop and I couldn't deal with the bus again so I made the decision to walk there. This, I think, was not a good decision. A fact to which the perfectly ... read more

After a quite frankly embarrassing amount of sleep (my defence is that I am on holiday so leave me alone), I decided to go for a wander. As I was due to meet the Vodkatrain group the next day I had decided to see something that I was less likely to do with them so took a walk along Nevskiy to either see a museum or the Peter and Paul's Fortress which was supposed to have lots of interesting exhibits about Russian history. This is a rather sore point for me as I feel like I have done a magnificent tour through a great country about which I know NOTHING so I tried to take every opportunity to be less completely useless as a human and go to museums or just read wikipedia pages.. So I ... read more

So it's been nearly 4 weeks since I left England and now that I have some time to breathe after the trans-Siberian trip I thought I'd take the opportunity to write down some of the stuff that I've done, mainly for my benefit but also so that people at home who are interested can get up to date on what I've been doing for so long! However, I won't be so self-indulgent as to think this is of any more than a marginal interest to anyone other than myself so I'm going to treat this as a travel journal which you are more than welcome to read - I've realised that although I chose a rather charming journally-book to bring with me to allow me to write a literary masterpiece, I actually much prefer typing so ... read more

Visiting st. Petersburg was quite long on my bucket list. Thanks to my cousin who is as an exchange student in st. Petersburg I had the opportunity to go there with a small group of our family. After all the preparations the day of the journey arrived…. Day 1 At 04:00 AM my alarm clock rings. I woke up and went to the house of my aunt Zubeyde, which was the meeting point with Uncle Emin, aunt Zubeyde and cousin Metow and left from there towards Amsterdam airport. On our way, as usual Murphy's Law, one of us discovered that he forgot his passport. With a rush we went back to pick up the missing passport and drove to the airport where we met our other travel buddies Dogan and Feyza. Both of them were soaking ... read more

I admit I have been wrong in neglecting museums during almost all of my trips. I should have visited at least a couple of museums while I was, for instance, in European cities. Moreover, I have neglected all museums in Saint Petersburg except the Hermitage, visiting none except it since 2007. It’s time to catch up with them. This piece will include information about several museums in Petersburg I visited in April. I made a careful selection of the museums, representing an immense variety of topics, if one thinks of it, and hope that readers will want to visit them on their own. In May, I hope to add some more museums. I will not accompany all of the photos with explanations. It will be food for thought. I will also translate only some of the ... read more

Old text: Here are some new photos after my short trips to Pushkin, Lomonosov, Gatchina, and Zelenogorsk. Definitely those places are of much interest. Zelenogorsk I didn't see previously, so I can say that it's a wonderful place, looking like a resort. It's full of trees and greenery and has two interesting churches and generally the place is pleasing in all aspects. I have already written about Pushkin, Lomonosov and Gatchina. I had about 10 days off work in September and had nothing to do, so it was a good idea to revisit those places. In October I will go to some other interesting destinations near St. Petersburg. This time (30 May 2013) I add the photoes of Shlisselburg Fortress (Oreshek) where we went in 2011 in the company of three persons. The weather was not ... read more

It was back in early Spring 1991, I was in my senior high school year…and got the chance to visit Leningrad and Moscow…10 days of a trip I would never forget…and even 22 years later...today, I remember most of these days, one after the other one. For our Senior year trip, we were given the choice between a beach in Yugolsavia…or 10 days in what I remember well, back in 1990 at the origin of planning this trip, was still USSR. 10 of us decided for USSR, around 40 for the beach…would it be the same today? I guess so! 17 years old at the time I had been to Turkey and Tunisia, but no further…I received my first passport for this trip! Yes, most of us do remember our first passport…well, maybe not Tiffany and ... read more

Traveling long distance is by no means a glamorous affair. Ten hours to Dubai, four hours in the airport and then another six to St Petersburg leaves you feeling and smelling like a washed up rat. My comfortable tracksuit pants had airplane food stains and my braless top had sagged from all the awkward sleeping positions I’d folded myself into. Yet through out my journey I’d found myself staring in disbelief at the designer outfits and ridiculously unpractical shoes that many women were wearing. It made me wonder if there are any cultures or peoples left out there who have not be affected by this preoccupation with appearance that sacrifices basic comfort. Oh the joys of people watching. Arriving in St Petersburg airport was not all that different from arriving in Phuket’s. A little busier perhaps, ... read more

When I reached Irkutsk I’d travelled 9000 km, using approximately 650 litres of fuel for the cost of 18000 rubles (about 350 pounds). After 6 weeks of travelling just about everything in my bag was dirty, damaged or simply worn out. I spent a couple of days enjoying the friendly atmosphere of Irkutsk, with its ornately carved wooden buildings, before leaving on a plane back to St. Petersburg. The flight back to St. Petersburg was, of course, a disarmingly easy journey. It took just 7 hours to return to where I’d started from. Although, that said, Irkutsk is further from St. Petersburg than India, and on the same longitude as Indonesia. Appropriately perhaps, one of the books I read on my trip was Edward Said’s Orientalism, which explores the ways in which Western scholars and travellers ... read more

The St Petersburg story continues at about 30 minutes past midnight (nominally thought of as "last night"). That’s when we got back to the cabin, set the wake-up call for 5:30 in the morning, and went straight to bed. That first day had been phenomenal, but was really exhausting. The alarm went off as scheduled and we sprang spryly out of bed (if you believe that we should talk about some hot investments), got dressed and the carry-bag repacked for another day. We went up for a quick breakfast and headed off the ship again. We got through immigration quickly this time (everyone seemed to have been ashore the day before so the line went fast) and found the right place for our tour bus. All this was before the 7:00 AM departure time. And once ... read more
