During the trip from Berlin it stopped every half hour raining. The distance within Poland about 400 km no city to see only a lot of agriculture and trees. July 1st: Where to begin? On the first level of hell I guess...Remember that 5 hours of sleep I'd planned on getting? Well that was broken up every hour or 2 by screeching loud alarm sirens, even as I was stumbling out of bed and into my clothes the alarms would cut out. I was out of bed by 6am to catch the airport bus, the reception guz said that the alarms were fire alarms and they didn't know what was causing them but they suspected that somebody was smoking in a non-smoking room... what fuckwit would do something like that?! and how could they be so stupid as to do it 3 or 4 times after they'd set off the alarm the first time?!! Anyway, on to the airport. I was organised and made sure ... read more

I took a night train from Belgrade to Bucharest. To do this I had to take a 2-hour bus to the station, take a train across the border, and then catch a night train to Bucharest. Apparently the line directly from Belgrade is out of commission. I met a few Serbians and they helped me get a couchette. Apparently, they didn't realize that I had already bought a ticket. I thought I was paying the difference between my seat and a couchette but I ended up paying a full fare. I tried to explain it to the conductor when I got off the train, but he gave me the runaround about how this was a separate train and that my ticket was for the train from Belgrade (even though it doesn't exist). It was a futile ... read more

After sleeping in until 9:30 AM, having breakfast and getting ready for the day, we boarded a local bus and headed for the Warsaw Uprising Museum. We arrived at the museum around 12:00 PM and did not leave until 3:45-4 PM. This was a wonderful museum that told the story of Germany’s attack of Poland, in general, and Warsaw, specifically. Importantly, it highlighted the Warsaw uprising against Germany in 1944. This uprising was led by the People’s Army, but also included local civilians and members of the London Underground. Despite their efforts, the German military level Warsaw and the Poland High Command was forced to sign the capitulation treaty on the 2ndof October 1944. Poland would not regain their independence until 1991. After leaving the museum, we took the local bus back to the Polish regional ... read more

Despite delays in Detroit that caused some excitement in Chicago as we ran through the airport in an effort to catch our flight to London, the remaining legs of our travels were fine. We departed Chicago at 10:50 PM (Friday, 29 June) and arrived in London at 11:50 AM (Saturday, 30 June). After a quick lunch, we departed London at 1:55 PM and arrived in Warsaw at 5:00 PM. From the airport, we took the local bus to our hostel (Hostel Helvetta) in downtown Warsaw. After check-in, we went to dinner at a local restaurant - the food was excellent. Sara had a boiled potato stuffed with beef, and I had a beef/pork combination that was wrapped in cabbage. Although exhausted, we decided to spend about an hour walking through downtown Warsaw. We were most excited ... read more

Polish Military Musuem. Most of these guys must have had incredible strength and endurance. We then made it to the Castle/Palace. Many protests throughout the city against adopting the Euro slowed mom and dad by taxi; I ran everywhere a mile or so to go get the train tickets an a couple miles back to meet them at the Palace. It was a long tiring day in the heat and humidity, but I still found the will to go for a run. Some amazing photos - take a look Off to Torun- a beautiful city. Warsaw has its history but is crazy, sort of like a New York or L.A. A couple days is enough. Matt... read more
