I had to depart Warsaw early this day, sadly. I awoke at 4:00am and got myself ready. I checkout of the Novotel and walked over to the Centralna rail station. I cought a 5:35am train to WAW airport. Our first flight was at 7:35am, on LOT Polish Airlines to Dusseldorf. It was LOT flight 409, an EMB-175 aircraft. I was in economy seat 18D. We were going to have a very tight connection at DUS, and departing Warsaw 15 minutes late did not help. I chose Dusseldorf because it had the most open business class seats of all the Delta Europe departures. If we did not make it in time, our back up was to take an afternoon Air Berlin flight from DUS to Boston. That flight had 100s of open seats, so we were covered ... read more

Even though I would have loved to sleep in, I was up at 7am so I could get ready for a tour of the city with Emilia(EmyG). I went down to a Costa Coffee, and had a coffee and croissant. I met Emilia in the Novotel lobby, and he headed out on the bus to Wilanów Palace. They call the palace "The Polish Versailles", and I was looking forward to it the most on the tour. It took about 30 minutes to get there, and her and I just talked a lot on the bus. The palace was as amazing in person as it was in photos! We strolled around the gardens for well over an hour, maybe even two. It was such a beautiful place! I could have stayed there all day really. But, there ... read more

I awoke at 6am, and got myself ready. I walked out to the main square and had some breakfast. I ate a quick meal at the McDonald's, and then I saw my travel buddy Jerome(Castex21). We walked around a little bit and then decided to meet up at the rail station for our 10:10am train to Warsaw. Everything worked as planned, and the train departed on time. We had a first class seat for about $20. It was a boring and routine train ride, but soon we were at Warsaw Centralana station for an on time arrival of 12:50pm. It looked to be a nice day! Jerome left to check in to his Airbnb, and I went to get my room at the Novotel. We decided to meet up at 4pm in front of the Palace ... read more

A month and a half in Poland... Even though we did quite a few trips close to my hometown already, it was time to head some place further, see a different part of Poland. And what better place to start than the capital! When we were booking the train tickets I have noticed that finally Poland had upgraded some trains since the last time I took one, so we decided to fork out a few extra bucks and try out the premium train! We were catching it from Malbork, so first we had to take the ancient train from Elblag to Malbork... or so I thought... as it turned out that even the local, shorter routes got some upgrades as well! I couldn’t believe my eyes when a new train pulled up at the station in ... read more

General info: Currency: Polish Zloty Cost of living: 1,5l bottle of water 2zł, beer in a pub 8-12zł, meal in restaurant 25zł My thoughts about the first flight on duty to my home city, were very positive. At the Warsaw airport, I was welcomed by my sister and 6 years old niece, very excited about the situation. After we picked up our suitcases, I got permission from the Captain, so girls could join us on the bus to the hotel. My brother was waiting for us there, so after arrival we headed together straightaway to our home. My Mr M joined us shortly after. At home I could rest and enjoy nice dinner with my loved ones. Later I went out with my friends and spent pleasant relaxing evening at the Vistula riverside. Next morning I ... read more

It's probably 16 or 17 years since we last visited Warsaw so we had expected a lot of changes. I think the biggest change was the infrastructure and getting around the city is now incredibly easy. The other noticeable change is the language skills, especially in English, which the citizens of the Polish capital have acquired. We flew in to Warsaw's Modlin Airport which is the best part of an hour out of the city, but the transfer on the Modlin Bus was comfortable and cheap, and the wifi was amazing! if you fly with Ryanair, they are planning on relocating to Chopin Airport later this year, which is apparently a little easier to get to. The bus drops you off right outside the Palace of Culture and Science. This old Soviet skyscraper looks like something ... read more

Monday 14th March I left sunny Newcastle to start my journey to Warsaw with Sue Beverley, International Trade Adviser and a delegation of North East companies. On arrival I bumped into Carl Peacock from Explorer Group and we had a quick catch up about the company before I set off on my journey to Poland. Carl was jetting off to Slovenia on business to meet with suppliers. I joined my travel companions Justine Crozier from Learning Curve Group and Graeme Jordan STO Consulting t/a Graeme Jordan CV on the KLM flight to Warsaw via Schiphol in Amsterdam. We caught up with Sue Beverley and John Leggett from Nexstamp UK in Middlesbrough. After a pleasant flight we made our way into the centre of Warsaw. After a short taxi ride from the airport to the Polonia Palace ... read more

We have a later start this morning, 0830 with a drive around the city with our local guide. She describes all of the horror of war in this city and how around 85% of Warsaw was razed in the 2nd world war. Most of the buildings we see are replicas of the original ones which were rebuilt based on archived photos, post cards, etc., and it looks realistic. Eventually we do a street walk through the "old town", most of which has been reconstructed. We are warned about pick pockets again, especially the young kids. As we walk around, there are several kids playing piano accordions and a cup in one hand begging. They are very good at getting in your face, so we are all very concious of our money, etc. One of these kids ... read more

Today we have another early start, bags out at 0615 for an 0715 departure. This morning we are heading to Auschwitz for an early morning visit (try to beat the crowds again). We leave Kraków with the peak hour traffic going against us so we have a trouble free trip to Oswiecim, the town where the Auschwitz concentration camps were housed. One of the Barossa couple (John) is of Polish descent (parents emigrated to Australia in 1948) so he is a bit touchy about this visit. We arrive on time and as we get off the coach, the hairs start to prickle a little. Quick toilet stop and then we are in and broken into 2 groups for ease of viewing, etc. We are group no.1 and also have John in our group. I tend to ... read more

Hi Everyone, This weekend was the Capital of Poland - Warsaw. My main impression is surprise at how modern it is. I was expecting some old buildings, with a bit of a run down soviet style being the norm. Instead, I got a completely modern city. The Warsaw uprising of WWII resulted in most of the city being levelled, so the Soviets had clean slate to work with. Most of the area surrounding the downtown shows this via the large and characterless apartment blocks and office buildings. The downtown area is a different story - thoroughly modern and stylish. Poland really took off after the fall of the Soviet Union. There's still an "Old Town" section that shows the pre-WWII character, but it's mostly reconstructed and not actually old. As usual, the pictures will show you ... read more
