Again I write around 3 months after the events. The advantage of hindsight is that I don't have to write as much as I have forgotten many of the details of what happened. The overnight sleeper from Vilnius to Warsaw took 10 hours, and cost £12. The beds were comfortable and clean, the main draw back of the journey was being woken every 30mins or so till 2am for border crossings, passport control and customs. The guys in my carriage (6 people per carriage) were Bruce and Guy (Glasgow boys) and two of a group four English guys travelling Eastern Europe. So much for my anticipation of lots of Polish and Lithuanians travelling by train to work/see friends/visit relatives. I guess they must travel by car like everyone back home, leaving the trains to the tourists. ... read more

Warsaw is really not a ghetto. They used to have one, maybe was it here the expression was introduced during WWII. In fact, Warsaw fulfils most of the requirements for a modern European city. A well-functioning, punctual public transportation system. A clean, safe city center, where McDonalds’s and KFC's are mixed with the more traditional stores. A nice old town, castles, parks, etc. Friendly people everywhere, willing to help the lost foreigner. A huge building in the middle of the center with a scenic view over the city, a gift from uncle Stalin. The city has however missed out on one thing that would make it attractive for foreign visitors: It's not adapted for foreign visitors. 7 DE ABRIL DE 2002 Después de semanas de frío, en España empezaba a entrar la primavera cuando nos fuimos a Berlín a padecer temperaturas promedio de 8 grados en pleno abril. Nos gusta la mala vida: un fin de semana se anunciaba una subida a 17 grados, pero se nos ocurrió ir a visitar Varsovia, donde estaba nevando... ...La antigua Warszawa es la capital de un país muy sufrido. La guía dice que algo raro debe tener Polonia que todo el mundo le arrebata las fronteras: suecos, rusos, prusianos/alemanes, húngaros y austriacos. Demasiados vecinos poderosos y expansionistas. En particular, le tienen tirria a Rusia y Alemania. Acaban de salir del dominio de Moscú, y ahora temen, con cierta razón, que la entrada en la Unión Europea acentúe el proceso ya en marcha de compra masiva ... read more
