Day 4 - Full day in Warsaw, Poland After getting in late Friday night, both Mom and I slept great! As usual Mom woke up with the sunrise and got ready and went down to breakfast before I even awoke. I got up at 8am and got showered and ready for the day. I stopped by the breakfast buffet and then met my Mom at the orientation meeting we were having in the hotel discussing the rest of the tour. Helina talked about where we were going on what days and the optional tours we could sign up for were also discussed. I'm taking 3 optional tours and Mom is only taking 2. The one Mom is not doing is the Salt Mine tour outside of Krakow...they said there is alot of walking down stairs and ... read more

July 24 - Daria did indeed get up just before 5am to get the early train. I did not. But I was up around 6:30am and getting ready, having breakfast, packing up the last bits. It still looked like rain but I thought perhaps it would hold out. It didn't - it started to rain just as I made it to the bus stop. I got a bit wet walking to the bus and then to the train station from the bus. I managed to make an earlier train than planned, which was nice. Annoyingly, there is no information on the ticket saying what time the train comes, which platform, when it will arrive, so it was lucky I had the print out that the girl from the hostel gave me for the 8:15am train so ... read more

The word 'bleak' has always come to mind when thinking of Poland. I imagined a cold, unhappy place, not dissimilar to images of Russia prior to our visit in the middle of summer. Poland shattered my preconceptions and we found Warsaw to be a really lovely city with friendly locals and instead of being cold, it was ridiculously hot! We arrived in Warsaw late afternoon and after assembling every Russian doll that had been bought, in a huge doll collection we went out for a group dinner near the Old Jewish Quarter in Warsaw. From dinner, we decided to see what the nightlife in Warsaw had to offer and went on an impromptu pub-crawl ending up in a dungeon-like club before walking the 45 minutes back to our hotel. The next morning, feeling quite sorry for ... read more

We took yet another train from Krakow to Warsaw. The fare was relatively cheap, the train relatively modern and it only took a couple of hours. We were staying with Apartments Apart in Warsaw. Our apartment was one of the cheaper apartments called “Piwna Yellow.” It was a modern apartment with all facilities and located in the heart of the Old Town. Not as luxurious as the apartment in Krakow but certainly provided bang for your buck. My first port of call was checking the news at the internet café, whereby I quickly learnt that the Polish President and several high ranking military and government officials were killed in a plane crash that morning. We were about to have an interesting day… We only had 1 ½ days to explore Warsaw so we decided to go ... read more

I returned to Warsaw from a trip to the Baltic's and found that the Polish President Lech Kaczynski has passed away in a tragic play crash. Poland has been in mourning for sometime, for not only the president, but the 95 other important people on the plane. Military, bank, representatives from many regions, living relations of the Massacre at Katyn, among many others passed away. Weather or not his party or believes were appreciated or of interest to the individual, Poland as a whole as been extremely united over this unfortunate event. Below you will find a few articles that I found to be of interest. http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/04/poland_in_mourning.html http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/04/10/poland.president.plane.crash/index.html?hpt=T1 http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/13/opinion/13iht-edcohen.html Photos by: Lukasz Garbera and Jennifer Kessler... read more

Warszawa Time flies by and 2012 is already close, but Alexander has not yet completed the narration of past journeys. It’s all laziness. I’m madly in love with Wodehouse books, intending to buy them all, no matter what they cost. I found them in Nepal, in St. Petersburg, and now I’m ordering them from Amazon. The story about Warszawa evokes dear emotions in me, though the journey started as far back as 26.03.2010. Now, some circumstances prevent my wanderings here and there; I’m generally between two cities, St. Petersburg and Birsk, and did not visit any new countries since the trip to Serbia. The idea is to save up as much money as I can for a certain purpose. But I’m thinking over plans to visit some Russian cities not far from St. Petersburg and also ... read more

The day started by hostel staff knocking on my door looking for the heater that was in there and 8:20 am. Why they couldn't wait till later I dont know. I was booked on to a tour of the salt mines for 10:15 so I thought I might as well get up. The trip was booked with the same company I went with yesterday so I knew it would be decent. It was a quick trip, only about 30 mins. The mine has been open for over 700 years and while the miners got bored on their lunch and stuff they would carve statues and chapels. the tour lasts for about 2 hours, but still only takes you into about 2% of the tunnels. Its really impressive all the stuff they've managed to make out of ... read more

well it turns out last night that there was only1 other person staying at the Hostel. So I've had a 6 bed room to myself. Its the same tonight but then theres a bit party arriving tomorrow night, although they might just all go in the 12 people rooms. So yesterday after I got here I went for a walk around the outside of the castle. It shuts at 4 so with the tours I'm going on I wont get to actually go in it. Then I came back up to the main square and went in St Mary's church. Its really nice in there and the audio guide had was interesting. Back at the hostel I cooked myself so pasta and had a shower. One of the advantages of being one of two people staying ... read more

Just a quick message to let you know Im back in Krakow. The train was only 35 zlt compared to the 110 I paid to get to Warsaw so god knows what happened there. This train had compartments within the carriages, so I felt a bit like I was on the Hogwarts express. The hostel looks ok, reminds me a bit of a pub I've been to but cant put my finger on which one. I'm in a 6 people room, but so far no one else has checked in, so I might have my own personal room. Off out to do a bit of exploring. ... read more

So last night Im checking my facebook and stuff before heading to bed when a woman asks me to help her log on to the e-mail. She wanted to log on to the address she had at home, not a web based one. So after a lot of googling we finds the website. Then she tells me she cant remember her password. To recover your password you have to phone them, but that would have cost a fortune from Poland. So we decided to create her a new email address on hotmail, so she can email her friend. Gets to the hotmail page and is half way through creating a new email when she tells me that she does have a hotmail account, but she doesnt want to use it. Something to do with her partner ... read more
