Since I reached my hotel in the evening after a long day of driving, I did not do much except have dinner of a delicious salad, a glass of wine, and walk out to the nearby city parks to take some evening photos. Then I took a nice long hot shower and went to bed in my cool room. I was a little disappointed in the room because I specifically booked one that had photos of a hanging chair - something for me to relax and read in. There was no such chair. Oh well. Otherwise, Hotel Norge by Scandic was fantastic. It was right in the middle of town, the room was nice and spacious, the restaurant was nice, and the breakfast buffet was incredible. The next day, I enjoyed my breakfast buffet, with various ... read more

Well it started yesterday with, to be totally honest, a full day travelling to Bergen. This seems so weird as it is not that far but I suppose when you have to change in Amsterdam and have a couple of hours there it does take its toll. We arrived in Amsterdam and knowing that alcohol was really expensive on the ship, e.g a bottle of house wine £50, we thought we would have a beer in the terminal before we went to the gate - BIG MISTAKE as we did not envisage having to go through customs again. Now because we are not in the EU we had to queue up and not go through the electronic gates. Well when you have only 2 boarder guards on and we seem to have people with issues with ... read more

Well today is not what we expected. Susan woke up not feeling great so decided it was time to take a covid test. Boy it pop’d up positive too quickly. We both put on masks and I opened the door to the deck. Then I called the front desk and told them. They said medical would be contacting us shortly, Well,…. Medical opened an hour later and I called and they had not heard anything from the front desk. They asked us to show up at 9. We did and they did a rapid test on us both, Susan – positive, me – negative. They then did a PCR test for us both. Susan is quarantined in the room, I’m free to go about as long as I’m masked. I leave to go for a long ... read more

Dear All If I publish something on the Internet today, it only feels right that I first start it off with a few words about our beloved Queen Elizabeth II. Thank you so much for all you have done for us Ma'am, for your people and for your country. You have been such an inspirational figure in my life, and I believe I speak on behalf of many of my fellow countrymen in saying that only now am I beginning to fully realise how much you have truly shaped this country and our identity during your lifetime of service. I have known no other Britain than that with you leading it, and these next few years will certainly be different. May God speed you on your next journey Your Majesty, and may your selfless example of ... read more

Bergen - so much to see and so little time. Today we were on a tight timeframe as we were getting picked up from the hotel at 5pm, and transported to the port to begin our Hurtigruten cruise. In the meantime, we wanted to explore and set off straight after breakfast, walking into town. Last night when we went out to get dinner it was dark so didn't get to see much at all, but in daylight, we are both really impressed. Cobblestone streets, small wooden houses built into the mountainside, and very cute shops. Oslo let me down with its street art (I'm sure they have a lot but we just couldn't find it), but Bergen more than made up for it. Huge colourful murals on building walls were everywhere as well as smaller pieces ... read more

Our next adventure begins with meeting a famous dancer on the train. She is from Chicago and is the opening act for Burlesque Oslo. Todays journey takes us from Denmark, through Sweden, and into Norway. First impressions are that the country is similar to Canada; well manicured farms, Manitoba like rock walls, many lakes, and miles of forests. Wanting to see the Norwegian countryside, it is back on the train. The scenery was constantly changing, and absolutely breath taking. At first there are densely forested areas carpeted in moss, then pastures with dozens of waddling snow geese, glacier pot lakes, cascading waterfalls, rock cropping hills, and ending with an almost apocalyptic looking landscape dotted with sporadic cabins. Interestingly enough, we are going through several towns on the way to Myrdal. We pass through Geilo, Al, and ... read more

Yes. Back in Norway at Chris and Hege's enjoying catching up with our Norwegian family. Our plan for this year was to stay in NZ as Chris and his family had been out to NZ in December / January. But as everyone knows, Grandchildren rule the world, and after a couple of skype's where Lilly and Stella suggested that we should seriously reconsider staying in NZ, and just come to Norway, Di contacted our travel agent and within about 5 hrs, it was all settled. A good price, with Singapore airlines providing the wings, and once again, off to Bergen. This is the 17th year we have travelled here to stay with Chris and Hege. Our first trip was in October 2002, spurred on by the need to meet Hege. Amy joined us, and meeting Hege ... read more

We were speaking to a Dutch couple at breakfast, who had been on an amazing expedition further north in Norway armed only with a Landrover that had a roof tent. They had been defeated by the rain and had retreated back to hotel civilization in Bergen. It will be busy in town today - they informed us - there is a big football match. This obviously wasn't new information to me and we were back at the hotel to pick up our tickets. The "big" football match was the "Westland" derby between Brann Bergen and the upstarts from down the road, FK Haugesund. The distance between the 2 cities is miniscule in Norwegian football terms which in theory makes it a hot rivalry, but the tradition of the 2 clubs could not more different. FK Haugesund ... read more

I have never had good reason to monitor the weather in Norway. My eyes have always focused on the clouds passing over Britain and heading to Denmark and the lower areas of Scandanavia. However having decided it was about time we made our first forray into the country, I purchased two £30 pound returns to Bergen and everything changed. Bergen is officially confirmed as the European city with the most rainy days. I know you don't exactly go hunting the sun in Scandinavia, but the averages make some depressing reading. There were on average 17 days of rain in September. The hours of total sunshine in the month didn't look too clever either. The average rainfall is even extreme by Norwegian standards and comes in at nearly 3 times the totals of Oslo. I checked back ... read more

August 14, 2019 – Bergen, Norway – Weather: 57°F/14°C, overcast, intermittent rain showers throughout the day – some light while others were torrential, wind 11.4 mph, humidity 76° Located on Norway’s southwest coast Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and is the nation’s largest port. The city lies in a lush green mountain landscape which experiences 280+ days of rain each year. The city rose to prominence in the early 12thcentury due to its dried-cod trade. The old wharf area on the inner harbour is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and features wooden structures, or long houses, established by the Hanseatic League to carry on their commercial traffic. Today we set out to explore Bergen first by taking a funicular ride that ascended 1,200 feet above sea level to the observation platform on Mt. ... read more
