Majoituin Citybox-hotelliin. Automaatilla hoitui sisään kirjautuminen ja maksam... read more

Monday 4 December 2017 Once at Bergan, arriving at 9.30am, we hopped into a taxi van with a fellow Australian who was doing the same tour as us, arriving at the Clarion Admiral Hotel. We loved Bergen when Tom and I drove there with our motorhome in 2014 so was looking forward to seeing it in the winter. On arrival, we could feel the cold but is was crisp and dry. Our hotel room wasn’t ready but Sheryl’s was, so we used her shower. It felt great after flying for 24 hours. Norway is such a tricky country to get to from Australia. There is no short path! As it was forecast to rain the next day we decided to take the funicular up to Mt Floyen. There was snow everywhere, and the site down on ... read more

The races have been amazing. We are so glad we came to Norway for the races. Both the elite women's and men's races were exceptional with huge and huger crowds .. and the Dutch fans finally showed up. Saturday was enjoyable with two races that day - ending with a decisive victory for Chantal Blaak from the Netherlands. Sunday was the men's elite race - and the crowds were enormous. We started the day out watching on TV as the race started 40kms or so from Bergen. It was a long race, so we had time to go and watch the circuit from several spots. We had intended on watching the closing laps from the park or the main square - but there were so many people you could hardly see or move ... so we ... read more

A short post today for a change. It was the Junior Women (Elena Pirrone - IT) and the Under 23 Men's Road race today, and we decided to walk the course to find the spot we wanted to watch the main races tomorrow and Sunday. It sounded like such a good plan - we could scope out the best places, see where the fans were gathering, and check out Salmon Hill. So off we started, following the race barriers - and we walked and we walked and we walked. Up hill and down hill for 19.1 KM. And we determined the best place to watch is where we have been watching from - the Starbucks in the morning; the park in the afternoon; and the plaza at the very end. We did find several Norway cheering ... read more

Today is an off day for cycling, so we decided to take the Norway in a Nutshell tour. It takes you by train to Voss, where you change to a bus and drive up and down the steepest road in Norway, down to Gudvangen and onto a ferry that takes you through the narrowest fjord around to another fjord, on to Flam, and then on a mountain road up to the top of a mountain, before you get on a train back to Bergen - all in a day. It was a scenic day, and today's pictures will tell the story of what we saw. A few highlights though. Norway in a Nutshell is an unguided tour that is really just a sequence of tickets ... We had a good Rick Steves book that helped us ... read more

The Men’s Elite Time Trial did not disappoint … much. My favorite, Chris Froome, took third; but it was an exciting race. Tom Dumoulin won in convincing fashion - and he looks just like his picture on the pavement. Tony Martin had a top 10 finish - and rode better than expected in some really tough conditions. We talked yesterday about the potential for riders to change bikes before the 3.4 km climb. This morning when we were having our coffee at Starbucks – right by the base of the climb, they were putting down red carpet on the cobbles to make the official bike change zone. You had to change bikes in the area of the carpet; you could have 3 people assisting you – and one could give you a push – but only ... read more

Today’s blog title says it all. In preparation for the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trail tomorrow – and because I never knew what a funicular was until we came to Norway – we decided to preview the end of the course. We had read that the four time world champion. Tony Martin (aka the Panzer Wagon) was upset that the end of the time trial was uphill. Let me tell you – it’s not uphill – it’s up mountain. The last 3.5km is about a 9 percent grade. The funicular goes from near downtown up to the top. But, instead of taking motorized transportation, we walked it … slowly, thinking all the time .. I would not want to ride up this. But we did see people riding it – some enthusiastic leisure riders --- and ... read more

I know I am writing this on Tuesday instead of last night … all I can tell you is that the jet lag got me last night at about 7:30, and I decided sleep was the next thing that had to be done. But 12 hours later – we are ready for business again, or at least we will be when Dave gets back with the coffee. Flying into Norway was amazing – you fly in over the islands and then you land on what seems to be one of the small islands on a mountain ridge top. As it turns out, there was enough room to land, but I am glad we came in on a city hopper plane. I was looking on Wikipedia – and there are 67 named islands that are listed as ... read more

We’re falling into a pattern with a simple quick breakfast in the Lido, and we showed up in the Showroom for our fairly early departure for a fairly long tour: A seven and one-half hour driving marathon by bus, through tunnels, across fjords by ferry, where we would explore parts of the Hardanger Fjord farther from a couple of our ports of call earlier this week. We got on our Number 4 bus and we began our journey to the Hardanger Fjord. Our guide pointed out something that I guess that we hadn’t really noticed before, about the color of many of the houses and farms and buildings in the fjord, and the reason for it. Originally, wood would be treated with tar to preserve it during the harsh winters and rainy damp weather. This naturally ... read more

Welcome to our first blog. Decided to have a go at this blogging business. After all I am full of a lot of words, and what better way to capture our holiday than through words and pictures. On Friday 22nd September, Rob (aka Roco) and I (aka Coco), begin our holiday to celebrate 30 years of marriage. Roco of course if you asked would have a smart comment regarding these 30 years of marriage, but he isn't writing this I am. So let's begin... Once upon a time... kidding. Our journey begins in Mackay, where we head off to visit our family in Adelaide, and meet a special little lady, Freda. This little lady has a special name after my beautiful Nana. Freda is a most welcome daughter to two other special humans (as my granddaughter ... read more
