Europe 2015 Blog 2 Tuesday 30 June – Train from Stockholm to Oslo, Norway - departed the hotel with heavy suitcases and golf bags for another walk to the railway station – having been there so many times by now we knew exactly which platform to head for – platform 15 to board the 7.58am Stockholm-Oslo express. Boarding was like a cattle stampede and of course we had to heave all the luggage up the stairs along with others who were unable to lift their gear up the steep train steps. Then the aisles were jammed with people trying to locate seats and shove luggage anywhere it would fit. We ended up with our gear spread from one end of the carriage to the other. A lovely young tall Norwegian guy helped Graham lift the golf ... read more

All is well here in Norway with the weather being hot and dry. We haven't been doing much apart from general living and enjoying the kids. We walk down to the swimming area with the kids were they go in the water but it's still to cold for me as yet. Lilly does her usual jumps from the diving board while we watch with hearts in mouths. Also walks to feed the ducks and Chris and I went out for a fish one evening. No luck!!! We also have been celebrating Lillys 8th birthday with a party for friends one weekend and a family get together this past weekend. Lilly has had a magic birthday and it's always nice to see every one for a catch up. Of course there has been a bit of shopping ... read more

Well here we are back with the family in Bergen. Great to see the kids again and to see the new alterations in the house. A new kitchen and extended lounge with a revamped bathroom downstairs, along with a lot of new outdoor living areas. The house is certainly different since we were here last year. It is looking great. Also this year the Rhododendrons are still in full bloom which is unusual for when we come. Apparently everything is running a month late this year. Bergen became known as the City of Rhododendrons after the first ones were bought here in the mid 1800's and since then they have been planted in their thousands. Most of the roads have hundreds planted along them and along with Azaleas this make a fantastic showing when they are ... read more

Bergen is Norway's second largest city and a very iconic seaside destination with an historic harbor area. We stayed in the midst of the action where we could walk easily to many of the popular attractions. Again, the weather was less than ideal but hey, this is Norway in late spring! Our first attraction was the Funicular, a cable car that climbs from the harbor to the top of Mt. Floyen at a very steep angle. The view from the top is stunning, especially on a clear and sunny day, which sadly wasn't the day we were there, but still worth the trip. Our knit hats came in very handy here in Norway. The blue one was hand knitted by our Tucson neighbor Darlene and has become quite the fashion statement! Another must do in Bergen ... read more

Day1. We decided to hire a car and we're lucky enough to be given an upgrade at the airport to a great big Volvo something or other (I hate driving and cars, can you tell?). We drove out of the airport with the sat nav set up for the hotel but something went wrong and we found ourselves in Bergen going through a toll tunnel which we obviously had to then go back through so that was a good start. We got to our hotel, the Radisson Blu in the city centre which is well and truly in need of an upgrade but I'll leave that for trip advisor. The hotel carpark is ridiculously small, especially if you've been upgraded to a massive Volvo but Andy likes a challenge so he managed to park it. we ... read more

Ah yes, the last day somewhere else. Bergen, it's been real, I really enjoyed all that you had to offer and I really wanted to take advantage of that for one last day. After breakfast at the hostel and a sad goodbye to the Scottish students, Shawn and I went to the tourist information centre to try and book our Norway in a Nutshell tour, the most popular in the country. Just my luck, and I had a funny feeling the night before, all of the trains in the afternoon to Oslo were booked up so we had to bail on that idea and change it up on the fly! Luckily we hadn't yet booked the hostel in Oslo so we still had some room to finagle. We decided it was best to go right to ... read more

My first full day in Norway DID NOT disappoint! After making some new friends at the hostel the night before, we all planned to do a fjord cruise together to get a real taste of what this gorgeous country has to offer. We were led a little astray as we tried to book the tour at maaaany different places, only to eventually end up starting a line at the docked boat an hour before it was supposed to leave to ensure we got our tickets! But we got on, and man oh man was it worth it. We drove through spectacular fjords (for those of you who don't know what a fjord is, it was also explained to me yesterday as a narrow passage of water with steep banks or mountains on either side) and snow ... read more

Picking up where I left off, my shuttle ride to the airport consisted of sleep, and more sleep. This time I got to see the building in the morning light, and it's some pretty cool architecture. I checked in on my phone on the bus (loving the free wifi on like all modes of transportation, it's dope!) so I was able to skip the self checkin madness inside the main entrance. After I dropped my bag I headed to duty free and bought some Icelandic chocolate with my remaining Kronas (except for enough for another chocolate bar on my way home, don't worry, I didn't forget about you mum ;)). An easy wait and I was on the plane to Bergen, my first stop in Norway. I grabbed the flybussen airport express and the driver said ... read more
