Part of me can't believe I am actually here and another part of me just feels like this is totally normal...I don't feel like I'm in another country. Staying in a home...with my family, though we've only just met, makes me feel so at ease. I can't describe it, but all I can say is it doesn't feel strange or foreign. Sept. 4 I had a very easy flight from Switzerland, stopped in Amsterdam and arrived in Norway Saturday evening. Jesper, my cousin (a little younger than my parents) was to pick me up. Recognizing each other from our exchanged photos, I connected with my cousin, a tall, athletic looking man in his early 50's in trendy, fitted red jeans. We packed my luggage in the trunk of his little red Mazda Miata and raced along ... read more

This past week-end, I had a wedding on Saturday and a family reunion on Sunday. Both of these days were held in Belgium...but I do not really fancy to jump on a plane for 2 days....so here is the first little side trip. My first stop, Oslo. I know, I do not do justice at all to Norway. I should have stay way longer. But in life, there is what we should do...and what we can do, not always the same. So consider this only as a little amuse-bouche, but a very lovely one. So for me, Tuesday night, flight from Bangkok to Vienna with a connection few hours later to Oslo. The weather was not really impressive the few days before my arrival, rain and 13 degrees is not really what I like to experience ... read more

Blog 1: Oslo It took 34 hours from our door at Copa to the front desk at the Perminalen Hotel, there were no hassles just 3 airports , 3 flights and little drug induced zedding. We had 6 hours on middle leg Dag 1 (bit of Norwegian Oslo is a delightful small city of about 460 000 (pop of Norway=Sydney). We spent the day walking around and discovering it. It is also possibly the most expensive city in the world,a coffee or icecream $8, beer $12 and a large pizza $50. The locals love visiting other countries because everything is so cheap for them. Our hotel was excellent in a great location a couple of minutes walk from the fortress, small boat harbour and main stretch with all the sights. Its the right time to visit not ... read more

Norwegian sunshine! I've been so lucky with this weather. I arrived yesterday at the station and walked soberly in a straight line northwards to my accommodation. Easy! The route ended in the loveliest of green parks, sitting a couple of hundred yards away from my hostel. What with the sunshine, my arduous journey and my lingering hangover it was irresistible.  In fact its still irresistible as here I am now again in the lush grass by a pond where there are ducks and possibly fish. Wouldn't be surprised if there was the odd newt too. I'd never put it past them.  The hostel/hotel is a big one, but nice. Once again I have a lovely room with a kitchenette. I was given a shopping basket full of utensils so last night I cooked myself a pasta. ... read more

Last weekend Adina and I traveled to Oslo, the capital of Norway, to visit friends and, of course, to experience a new place in this great big world. Adina had lived in Oslo for the past 4 years, so not only did I have an experienced tour guide at my side but we had a friend's apartment to stay at in the city center, friends working the bar at a popular night spot, and a car to get to some otherwise not so easy to get to locations. Oslo is Norway's largest city but it is hardly a big city with a population of just under 600,000 and few tall buildings on the skyline. It is, however, a very wealthy city with employment opportunities for many. Of the 600,000 living in the city, 25% are immigrants ... read more

Today was our first full day in Oslo, and we woke up to a cloudy cool day. We decided to go to Bygdoy which is a peninsula adjoining Oslo, but very underdeveloped. We went first to the Norwegian Folk Museum where old buildings from different areas of Norway were reassembled and furnished according to the era. Most of the buildings were medieval farm buildings and cottages. It's an open air museum, so we could wander around acres and acres of trails and go inside many of the old houses and farm buildings. Next, we went down the road to the Viking Ship Museum to see 3 huge Viking ships dating from about 900 AD that were excavated from the Oslo fjord. There was also a fascinating exhibit of some of the artifacts found on the ships. ... read more

We spent our last day in Copenhagen visiting two of the many art museums in the city. We narrowed our visits to the post Impressionist artists - Gaugin, Degas, Monet, Lautrec, Picasso, and Matisse, to name a few. Rooms and rooms of my favorite artists, and we found some new Danish favorites. Then packed our bags and headed to the port where we boarded the ferry bound for Oslo. After a very pleasant ferry ride and huge dinner in one of the restaurants on board, we went to bed and woke up just outside of Oslo. We then checked in at our hotel and boarded a sightseeing bus to get the general layout of the city. Our first impression is very positive - lovely old buildings mixed in with modern, but architecturally charming buildings. Like Copenhagen, ... read more

Now I have your attention I'd like to let you in on a little secret. I must confess it's Norway's public policy I admire most in the world; following an enormous injection of funds to service the health care, education, social security, aged care and infrastructure needs of the people. The Norwegian government made a momentous decision twenty five years ago to tax the profits on the extraction of the country's non renewable oil reserves at a rate to benefit all her citizens, who now enjoy the highest standard of living in the world. The offshore fund is managed by investing only in companies that demonstrate a commitment to ethical practices, and as the money resides overseas politicians can't tamper with the fund for base political purposes. Since the 1970's Norwegian governments have only used accrued ... read more
