Saw at first-hand the changing face of Europe. The area around the hostel felt more like North Africa than Norway with Norwegians very definitely in the minority. The vast majority were Somalians and other refugees from North Africa. In the morning had breakfast outside the National Theatre and then caught the ferry to the open-air museum in Bygdoy. Then it was a few hours free time before catching taxis to the airport for our flight back to London.... read more

Location: Norway Day: May 17th Reason to celebrate: Independence The only day in the year when it is acceptable to make noise in public without it being a federal offence. They hope for great weather, check, they hope for a country wide cheer, check, cheap ice cream for everyone! Not a chance! Even though Norway has been an independent country for nearly 200 years they still feel that dressing up formally and showing national pride is very important. National days in most countries vary the way they celebrate and from my experience how it’s done here in Norway and especially in Oslo is unique. In the past, when areas of land were divided by mountain passes and rivers, families would make their own formal wear and pass it down to younger generations. This formal wear was ... read more

Dear anyone who is every planning to travel at any time ever, Make sure you know when the FRICKING clocks change. It is with great restraint that I use the word fricking, given my day yesterday. My day started out bright and chipper, since there were no hostels available in Oslo, due to 2 world events being held there, a big car show and the world championship in sled dog racing (I can only imagine this is why there were no frigging hostels available), I had to upgrade to a hotel in the suburbs of Oslo, kind of like the Queen's of Manhattan, the Lambeth (ugh) of London, or perhaps the Ancaster of Hamilton.. you see where I'm going with this? Anyways, that's not important. The important thing was that I woke up feeling well rested ... read more

Upon arrival in Oslo by late-evening train from Lillehammer, what awaited me was a jaunt around the remaining Scandinavian capital city I had not hitherto visited. Already slightly attuned to the cost of living and more prepared for a continuation of a holiday in a cold climate, assessing what Oslo boasted was made easier thanks to the value-for-money Oslo pass, which allows the visitor unlimited travel on public transport as well as free admission to a whole host of attractions, the majority of which were the city's mighty fine crop of museums. The first full day, however, was intended as a get-a-feel-for-the-place style stroll around central Oslo, with the intended purchases in mind, and a budget which needed to be respected if all were to be achieved as planned. The city's shopping malls, namely Oslo City ... read more

There were many things I will remember about Oslo: thought provoking sculptures, viking ships, Norse villages, and meandering the big city itself; but sadly what I will recall the most is how expensive it was! The Scandinavian countries are known to have a very high quality of life, with Norway leading the pack, which is due to the high taxes that go into social programs. With such high taxes, those employed have much higher salaries and prices of goods are more expensive. Essentially what makes for a high quality of life for Norwegians, results in the country being crazy expensive for tourists. For example, when enjoying a delicious European street food staple: the kebab, you can find it for about $3.50 in Germany, but it costs $10 in Norway. While traveling through, it was a constant ... read more
