We arrived in oslo early in the afternoon after a beautiful train ride through the Norwegian countryside. Other than customs jumping on the train and questioning us about where we were going and having a dog sniff the carriage it was a peaceful journey and didn't require any changes which was nice. We decided we would find a spot to camp before sorting food and drinks and after some discussion decided to take a bus and then commuter ferry to an island to the south of oslo. We found loads of other campers on one side of the island, it was like a city of tents, some looked like they had just set up but others seemed to be of a far more permanent nature. We had a chat with a Frenchman who happened to be ... read more

Fredrikstad & Oslo Norway 5 & 6 June 2014 After crossing from Sweden into Norway with a heavy cloud in the sky and a little rain. Not even this could have lowered our spirits because we have been looking forward to actually seeing the amazing scenery we have seen in photos....and more. Norway is one of Europe's most sparsely populated countries. With a population of only 5 million people and a land area of 385,802 km2, the population density is only 16 inhabitants per km2. Most of the population are Norwegians. The indigenous Sami people traditionally inhabit the northern part of Norway, that along with parts of Sweden, Finland and Russia outlines an area known as Sapmi (or Sameland). Other recognized minorities are the Kven people, Jews, Forest Finns, and Norwegian Romani Travellers. In recent years, ... read more

Today I left England for Norway and I knew it was going to be cold I was just unsure how cold. The weather report said avg of -3℃ so that's not bad I can deal. Landed and everyone was pulling jackets and scarves and hats out of their bags. Reminded me of people from So-Cal when it hits 50℉ just layer upon layer. So I was a bit worried I under planned for the cold with only my leather jacket and hat. But as I walked off the plane onto the runway and the cold was about want I expected and it was a bit nippy but nothing with worrying about. I had a plan to take the train up to Oslo but the hourly shuttle had just left so I found a bus that goes ... read more

Docked 10a.m.right on the edge of the city centre, overlooking Akershus Fortress and Castle, walked over 14km today - another great city to walk around - bit dull and a few spits of rain but great for walking, top of 22 degrees. First stop was Vigeland Sculpture Park - acres and acres of stone, iron and bronze sculptures depicting a complete human life from birth to death - interesting?? Then to the Palace through very leafy suburbs - bit like Toorak - with lots of embassies scattered throughout the green tree areas - saw their changing of the guard - no security here - a lot more low key than we have seen. Saw Holmenkollen - the huge cradle used for Olympic ski jumping in 1952. Back through the city centre to Oslo Cathedral, then to ... read more

Our Norwegian business partner had invited me to speak at their client event in Oslo on the 5th of April. The event took place in the Grand Hotel in the city centre. I arrived there the night before, stayed the night in the beautiful art nouveau hotel and was thrilled to be part of this event. My 45 minute talk was on “Fair Testing in Web 2.0”, and I was happy to present some of the ideas we have been working with for years already. But what was really exciting was that the other invited speaker was Michal Kosinski from Cambridge University. He is well-known for his studies with facebook data: he found that it is possible to predict the Big Five personality traits, but also other aspects like sexual orientation, ethnicity, or political views from ... read more

In 1869, Henrik Ibsen, Norway's most celebrated playwright, wrote his first major dramatic success The League of Youth. In a scene later in the play, a patient of Ibsen's character Dr. Fieldbo, is complaining about the short sighted nature of the human condition. She implores of the doctor to suggest a cure for this, to which the doctor replies that only through "the spectacles of experience; through them you will see clearly the second time." I visited Norway at Christmas time in 2005. I was a teacher in Leeds England at the time, was single, making British pounds and decided I could finally afford to explore my Norwegian roots in Oslo as well as attempt some down hill skiing in Geilo. I recall very little about the trip beyond what was recorded in my ... read more
