After a train, a crowded bus, a confusing time in the Oslo bus station, and a second train, I walked out of the train station and got my first glimpse of Drammen. Drammen was the town that my great grandparents had left about one hundred years before to start a new life in America. I had always been proud of my Norwegian heritage, so it was exciting when my mom made contact with a second cousin who still lived in Drammen. Her cousin, Cato, and his partner, Mona, came to America and visited my family there in 2005. I was in Antarctica during their visit, so it wasn’t until 2007, when I met my parents in Dublin, Ireland, that I finally met Cato and Mona. We had a grand time in Dublin and became great friends. ... read more

12:53 Russian mafia, russian vodka, and russian women, what an adventure a whole day tour of the capital proved to be frustrating and fun all at the same time. Many massive and very old palaces marked a better time for the people of St Petersberg. Estonia was small and very picturesque, being the first medevil town dating as far back as 900 a.d. Although the tour guide played a very small violin about the history of her country it was nice. Estonia on the other hand was a lot more fun but alot of the same architecture followed. setting sail and reaching Norway this morning was an early start at 715 but proved worth it as the tour guide spoke english very well and knew alot about his country. (p.s. Since he forgot to mention Poland ... read more

Just thought I should post a small update on the short cruise I went on with my family to Oslo from the 28th til the 30th of July! On Tuesday (28/07), my host family and I went on a cruise to the beautiful Norwegian city of Oslo. It was an overnight journey on the cruise ship to Oslo, where we spent one day looking around the harbour and the shops, before reboarding the ship and travelling back home to Copenhagen. The ship was nice, with several bars, nightclubs, pools, spas, and my personal favourite; the kid's play room full of colourful balls! We boarded the ship at around 4:30pm on Tuesday, and after farewelling Copenhagen from the front deck, we headed down to a huge buffet dinner. Completely bloated, my host sister (Helene) and I went ... read more

So we drove the 4 hours from Gothenburg to Oslo. Daddy had a good friend in Oslo named Berit. He met her many years ago in Utila, Honduras, and many years after that she visited him in Washington DC and they also travelled in South Africa together. They had not seen each other in over 7 years. Berit and her boyfriend, Stein were very nice and have 2 kids, Helena who is1 and Nikolas who is 5. I had a lot of fun playing with Nikolas even though we did not speak the same language. We played with light sabers, trains, and ran around laughing. We went to Vigaland which was this really cool park with interesting statues. The most famous one was one of a crying baby. Lots of Bundas in this park. We then ... read more

For Kristi's birthday this year I took her to Oslo the Capital city of Norway for a weekend break :) Kristi had no idea where I was taking her, all she knew was that on Friday she had to meet me at Liverpool Street station at 12.30pm so we could take the train out to Stansted airport. (I emailed her a series of misleading clues throughout the week, hints suggested everywhere from Somalia to Iraq!) We arrived at the airport and I managed to get Kristi to the actual boarding gate with her still having no idea where we were going, she only found out about 30seconds before we boarded - and even then only because they announced it over the intercom! Flying into Norway was fantastic. The fjords and tiny Islands are all spread out ... read more

Jess.

After a nice walk this morning (and the best free breakfast EVER) we booked a taxi to the train station in order to avoid the death walk. Unfortunately, the only taxi in town was busy taking an old lady to hospital. One of the hotel staff insisted that she drive the "Aussie Girls" to the station free of charge - how could we say no? On the way, we received a question that we had heard from every single person we had encountered... "Australia.... so, may I ask... what are you doing here? " Charlottenberg was indeed a strange place to end up. Nice though. We caught the train successfully to Oslo, checked into our hotel (after a semi-killer walk) and then went out and bought ourselves some crazy clown pants! We are going to watch ... read more

We decided that whilst we had attempted some pretty full-on feats so far, we needed to challenge ourselves - I mean REALLY challenge ourselves - so agreed on eight desired sights to do in just ONE day... We awoke bright and early, (5:45am - though our parents probably don't believe us) and headed downstairs to the breakfast smorgasbord, where we feasted and also stole sandwhiches for later in our travels. We walked down to the T-Bane (Underground station) and caught the train to Vigeland Park, a park (in the middle of Frogner Park) dedicated to the works of Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. We were completely blown away by his meaningful and sometimes confronting works. Our photos don't really do the experience justice, but will hopefully give you some idea of the amazing nature of the park... ... read more
