Day One in Tuscany We all decided that it would be nice to have a down day and hang out at the villa and chill by the pool. We did a little grocery shopping in the morning, cooked some lunch and we ready to head to the pool when the sky opened up and began dumping buckets of rain on us. No real exaggeration here it was raining so hard that it began flooding into the villa. Martin and Shelly had a room on the top floor that was a watery mess from the storm. They ended up moving to an apartment elsewhere on the Stommenano property. This storm continued from about 1p until 5pm. It didn’t matter that we missed the pool time we all had a great time hanging out in the Villa. ... read more

Today we woke up at a reasonable time and felt pretty good about getting a decent night’s sleep. We took the water taxi to the train station and boarded our train to Florence. Our final destination being a little villa outside of Monteriggioni called Stomennano . Up until now our train rides have been uneventful and timely, not today. We should have expected problems when we couldn’t find our car or seats, they had changed equipment. Once we got reassigned and on our way it got a little stuffy in the car; oh the air conditioner is broken. The attendants on the train tried propping the doors open between cars which gave a little relief. Finally they offered to reassign us to a car with air conditioning but we were over half way through the trip ... read more

Ciao a tutti! We've just finished our first week of work for the 2009 season, and the weather has totally thrown everything for a loop. We've had relatively cold temperatures, plus plenty of rain, thereby turning the entire site into a huge mud pit, punctuated with large holes full of standing water. It's slow-going with heavy clumps of dirt to lift, tools getting coated, and shoes caking and sticking in the mud. My storerooms are a bit different from where I worked in 2007. We use a garage up near the museum that is owned by the Commune of Murlo. We have plenty of space, it's nice and cool, but the bathroom situation is a bit...interesting. There is, indeed, perhaps the most complicated and nuanced bathroom in the garage that we've named "Space Bathroom." You have ... read more

Hey again! We thought we would update this from Siena since we had a minute. We have both fallen in love with Tuscany. When we arrived yesterday afternoon we sought out a wine bar that was highlighted in our book. It was a cute place, built right into the city wall. After a couple glasses of wine we went for a walk around the wall to get great views of Siena and the Tuscan hills. Then we grabbed some MORE pasta at a little place in an alley. The streets here are absolutely amazing. There is no rhyme or reason to the set up, but looking down the roads it truely feels like a small Italian town. Siena is quoted as one of the best preserved Medival towns, and it lives up to that title. Today ... read more

I'm at T minus four days to blast off on yet another Etruscan adventure (now my seventh), but this time will be very, very different. And by different, I mean way more awesomer. Mom retired and I'm taking her to Italy on her first trip there so she can say hey to the Pope and see the funny things her crazy daughter likes to do, like dig large holes in the ground and write about broken pottery. Our itinerary will begin with a few days to explore Rome, a quick jaunt to Assisi, another quick jaunt to Florence, then some quality time in Siena and Vescovado di Murlo where I will spend the next two months. I ship mom back to Seattle on the 19th, and then it's time for cleaning a nasty dig house, organizing ... read more

Jet lag has finally sunk in, and I am exhausted. The last couple of nights Ive been waking up at 4-5 in the morning and have not been able to fall asleep. This morning was the same thing, so I got dressed, came online for awhile to pass the time, and eventually went back upstairs to wake up my roomate (Adele from Texas) to go to Siena. We walked to the bus stop and waited, and waited... and waited. Bus never showed, so we walked across the street to the train station and took the train there instead. I absolutely LOVED Siena. I could spend days there, just exploring the cobblestone streets. Its quite different from Rome and Florence as the architecture is much more mideival and gothic. There are gargoyles everywhere, and statues all around ... read more

Travel weekend numero uno. Where do I even begin? It was fast and furious. In just three and a half days, my dad and I covered hundreds of kilometers… and no small number of them was on foot! As I write this, we are sittingon a high-speed EuroStar train heading back north from Rome. Thank goodness! I packed my bag on Wednesday night. My dad had Thursday morning to pack his bag (and learn how to use the little stove-top coffeepot in my apartment). After class I made a hasty reservation for a hotel, gathered my teaching stuff I needed to bring with me (e.g., students’ papers I still have to grade), and then swung by the apartment to pick up my dad and the luggage. From there, we stopped at Tabacchi Two for sandwiches, fresh ... read more

Friday we went to Florence. Caught the bus at 8AM and arrived after 9AM. We stayed there until 7:30PM. I wasn't too impressed by Florence. There were a lot of tourists (crowded) and a lot of street vendors pawning off crappy memories. We rushed around the city in order to fit in the Museo dell'Opera (rushed), the Dome of the Cathedral (climbed up), the Uffizi Gallery (rushed), the Brancacci Chapel (most of us fell asleep during the 40 minute film) and the Accademia Gallery. I suppose my favorite thing to see was either the David or the 360 degree view of Florence from the top of the Dome. I took only 10 or 11 pictures. Paola claimed that I wasn't inspired. I'd have to agree. I can't really say much more about Florence. I'd go back, ... read more

Let me begin my write-up of this most recent weekend adventure by stating that it was my favorite trip by far. It truly was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Before continuing, let me just steer off topic by noting that I want to visit Palermo and then take a train to Messina. From Messina I want to hop on a ferry to the Aeolian Islands. I wish to visit Lipari, Vulcano and Stromboli. I would love to see the "black beaches, bubbling seas, sulfuric mud, hot springs, orange lava and molten rock." Yes, lava. Okay...onward... April 16th, 2009. Renato drove me to the train station at around 11 PM. While there, I ran into Antonette and her boyfriend Danielle. Soon after, Mike arrived. We talked and waited for the bus. I'll mention this right off the bat: My camera is no longer functional. I managed to take only a dozen or so photos of the Grand Place. Very disappointing. I thought it was just low on juice...eh, wrong answer. I now believe the battery is in need of a replacement. So, with that, there will be no more photographs. Kodak Fail. We left Thursday (04/9th) early in the morning. Took a train at 8:15 to Empoli and then transferred to a train heading toward Pisa Airport. The flight was okay. Was a bit of a rough landing. Thought we were going to slide. Grabbed the shuttle bus to the city center (~45 minutes). We walked around a SHIT load. Checked into our hostel. What else did we do? Hung around the Grand Place for a grand ... read more
