I am running out of adjectives to use as every where I go is totally beautiful, gorgeous and stupendous. Since leaving Milan we have based ourselves in Siena and done day trips from here. We have been to Florence and San Gimmiano as well as exploring Siena. Florence is a big city where we went to the Acadamia and saw Michaelangelo's David. Superb sculpture from the 1500s. Siena and San Gimmiano are smaller places with a huge amount of charm. This morning Em MADE me climb the bell tower here in Sienna which is the 2nd largest tower in Italy and has 390 very steep steps. Wow the view was amazing and I had to stop complaining as there were older women than me climbing to the top. Em being Em climbed the tower in Florence ... read more

Today was a wonderful adventure in Tuscany!! We left the hotel around noon and traveled to the town of Siena, not really knowing what to expect. We arrived to find a beautiful piazza with the famous Duomo. First we toured the Santa Maria della Scala museum. We saw the Comune di Siena, their permanent exhibits, a special Michelangelo exhibit, and a special restoration exhibit. There has been excavation and restoration by the town of Siena in this building. The building began as a hospital and place for orphans to come and eventually be launched into life. This all occurred in the 13th, 14th, & 15th centuries. Then we toured the Duomo (Cathedral), baptistery and crypts. The artwork, portraits, carvings and church were phenomenal. After many hours of walking, we began our trip back towards San Gimignano. ... read more

I'm a little confused about how I seem to have lost an entire week to the limbo of Italian lifestyle... (Inception reference, anyone?) Regardless, I'll do my best to update you on what I've been up to since the last time I wrote, ie, 12 whole days ago. Well after my nutty weekend of missed trains and bleeding all over floors and whatnot, I spent the ensuing week in a rather emotional state of anxiety. I think my dreams were worse than ever, but the thing is, my conscious mind was so horrified of my subconscious mind that it refused to remember anything in the mornings. All I can tell you is, I have a whole bunch of vague memories of frantically turning the bedside light on, and staring in the mirror as my panic subsided ... read more

Quick update... I just wrote on Friday, but my Sunday story needs to be written. SO there's this beach in Follonica, Italy. And my friends and I decided to go there for a day trip on Sunday. I got up at 7am and headed to the bus stop to buy my ticket, because my friends had all bought theirs on Saturday. "I would like to buy a round-trip ticket from Siena to Follonica, please," I said in decent Italian. "There is no room on the return bus," she says. Cool. So I call host-mom, and she tells me to go, and just take the train home. Okay. So me, Lisa-Ray, Sarah, Zac, and Katy catch the bus and ride to the Villagio Svissero stop in Follonica, where the free public beach was. Just an fyi, the ... read more

Let me provide you with a layout of my daily schedule. 7:45 - 8:00 : Wake up 8:00 - 8:30 : Breakfast (just me at the table, while Mom-Cristina pours my tea and makes sure I get my bagged lunch before I leave) 8:30 - 9:45 : Walk to school 8:45 - 9:00 : Get lost on the way to school and end up discovering an entirely new, spherical way of getting there 9:00 - 9:10 : Arrive at school drenched in sweat, because Siena and my body heat regulation system are NOT friends 9:10 - 9:30 : Realize that I've forgotten an Italian homework assignment and attempt to complete it before class, which usually fails 9:30 - 12:30 : Italian Advanced class with Roberto Fineschi, a Sienese Insegnante, and my classmates, Katy Kirkpatrick, John Dinh, ... read more

I cannot even BELIEVE it's been just four days since I arrived in Italy. So much has happened. I'm in a constant state of being stunned silent, confused, feeling stupid, and trying to find humor in the stunned silence, confusion, and stupidity. And I can't possibly be turning 21 on tuesday because I feel like a 2 month old. My communication skills are that of a tiny baby. When I got on the plane, I had no phone, no internet, and no friends. I made 2 during the flight, which was rather exciting - a 26 yr old Israeli/Russian man named Boris and a 47 yr old Italian woman named Annamaria. We talked pretty much the entire flight. The first of many things that I never expected myself to do. lol I landed at 8am, in ... read more

After waking up at about 09:00 and having two cups of coffee, we headed down the street to a small cafe on the corner of Via Nazionale and had croissants filled with what appeared to be marmalade, and another coffee. Refreshed, we then headed for Santa Maria Novella station and checked the departures board for the next train to Siena - 11:10. It was 10:55 and we were never going to make it in that queue and we weren't sure if we needed reservations or not. I suspected not as it would be a regional train to Siena, but just in case, Clare took her position in the queue and i dashed over to the platform to find out if our interrail passes would cover us. A nice Italian chap replied in the affirmative and i ... read more

Got up fairly early along with Pegah and Laura to make our day trip out to Siena, supposedly a smaller but equally as appealing city as Florence. We had planned to hop off the train on the way there in some tiny town to grab a traditional lunch. We decided to just pick a random number (2) and then get off the train after two more stops. Stop number 2 at that point ended up being Siena. FAIL. Probably worked out for the best though as Pegah had to head out fairly early to catch her train down to Sorrento. Wandered through the medieval streets for a little and ended up in the main square which I heard many considered the most beautiful in the world. Don't think I would go that far but it is ... read more

Siena Day one Yay, back on Busabout today. Head off to Siena today. We drive for a few hours and stop in Orverto. Beautiful place, would have loved to spend at least a night there. But unfortunately we had about an hour to get up to the top to the village, find a panini and get back to the bottom in time. Didn’t see much at all. Arrived into Siena about 1.30pm and checked into the sweatbox! Headed straight into town and began our usual dawdle around the town to get orientated. I love Siena, would be even greater if it wasn’t so hot, but you can’t have it all. Very gothic buildings all enclosed with the ‘old walls’. Lots of beautiful old churches too. We went to the Santa Maria d. Servi Basilica and it ... read more

Siena!!! Che bella citta! I arrived in Seina, and what a beautiful city! It surrounded by villas and farms and little towns on rolling hillsides! I am staying on just the outskirts of the city, and it is so beautiful! The veiw! The garden! Oh my! I went into the center just for a while today. I was so exhausted! But I walked around the main piazza called Il Campo. Each year in July they have a famous horse race there called palio. This city is much smaller than the others I have visited so far. Much more tranquile! (until someone scores in a world cup game then the noise coming from the bars is quite boisterous!) I also walked to Il Duomo. It was simply breathtaking. And from there I just wandered around wherever it ... read more
