Check-out was at 10am and there was a queue waiting to leave. It was another beautiful day and we were on the road again without too much delay heading south to Siena. It was only about 80km, so we thought we would take a short detour to a little town called SanGimignano with it’s ‘14 grey stone towers set on a hilltop and surrounded by an outer wall’. Unfortunately a few thousand other tourists thought they would do the same on a fine Easter weekend so parking was at a premium and we ended up driving straight through. We stopped just outside the town to take a couple of photos and then carried on to Siena, arriving early in the afternoon. We set up camp in a really nice spot overlooking the rest of the grounds ... read more

4/2-3/09 On Thursday we left Siena after 12AM by bus. We got to Salerno after 7AM, grabbed some breakfast and then hung out in the hotel for an hour or so. Checked out the fish market...loud place. Took the train to Pompei and had a guided tour. After, headed back to Salerno and ate dinner at a pizzeria. Following this...we explored the city with our professor. Bo Bar. A great place. We all sat near the water and chilled out until 3AM. 4/4/09 On Saturday we left by bus to Amalfi. While there, we checked out a church and hung out on the beach. The bus ride to Amalfi was amazing. Very narrow roads and so many turns. The whole time looking down at the coastline. Some people got sick. Nobody died. Before going back to ... read more

Alrighty...I'm going to post exactly what I had written down in my notebook. 3/20/09 Arrived at Pisa Airport around 1 in the afternoon. The flight is at 5:10. Ate the sandwich that my host family gave me. Tried eating the apples. One of them was rotten and the other was on its way. I'm serious when I say that there was a cocoon inside one that was browning at the top. I poked and it poked me back. I just know that at some point along this trip through Germany a giant bug will burst out of my chest cavity. 18:44-- On the bus from the airport to central Frankfurt. The bus ride took an hour and a half. Walked around Frankfurt for a while. Too dark to capture any nice photographs. A very modern city. ... read more

I got back on Tuesday from a very exciting trip to the south of Italy. I went with Samantha, one of the students this semester. It worked out really well because we have very similar ideas about how to travel—which basically means that we don’t plan things well because we think it's more fun to explore (this also involves getting lost a lot and walking around aimlessly). We also think that food and drink are the most important part of any trip. Following these rules, we had an entirely random and delicious trip. Friday evening we took an overnight bus to Salerno, a beautiful city on the coast about an hour from Naples. We left Siena at around midnight and found ourselves at the Salerno bus station at 6:30 in the morning after a pretty uncomfortable ... read more

First big Wednesday trip and it was a blast... I don't have classes on Wednesdays so we left Tuesday night for Siena. Since we booked the bus over 2 weeks in advance we only had to pay 5 dollars for transportation. Talk about a budget traveler! So we arrived in Florence 11 pm Tuesday night, walk around see the famous Piazza del Campo, grab a piece of Nutella Piazza (don't worry, just nutella, no other traditional pizza toppings), and settled in for a busy Wednesday. After a quick breakfast at the Hotel we headed to Basilica Cateriniana of S. Domenico. This church was huge with just one huge center nave. Free admission which is always nice and some nice decorations and stain glass. Then we headed across town to see the 2 major sites. The Piazza ... read more

I don't have classes on Wednesday, so I took a bus Tuesday night (lasted three hours) to Siena. Siena was beautiful, although strictly-speaking about sightseeing it is capable to do it all in a day. The first places I saw was Basilica Cateriniana of San Domenico, which was free to get into and the Piazza del Campo (which is where they hold the horse races in the summer - think James Bond, Quantum of Solace opening scene) and the Palazzo Pubblico. In the Palazzo, there is the tall Bell Tower that we climbed to the top of. 400 stairs later there was a beautiful view of Siena, and the Piazza del Campo. The way up was really windy and tight spaced, so the amount of people that could go up at a time was limited to ... read more

Thursday night we walked around Siena...chilled out for a little in this bar. Met up with some Italian students. Walked around for a bit. Went to this place with some live music. The band played Little Wing and a whole lot more. The guitarist was great! On March 17th the drummer from the band is going to play a solo show with his acoustic guitar. All Bob Dylan I hear. Can't wait. Friday morning we met up at the train station. Took a train to Empoli. From Empoli we went to Pisa. Pisa blows. Graffiti everywhere. A large number of gypsies. Kind of dirty. We walked to the Piazza dei Miracoli and saw the Leaning Tower, the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Museo dell'Opera. Did not climb the tower because it would have cost 15 Euro. ... read more

Does it rain in paradise? Of course! Grapes and olives need water to grow. We awoke to fog and rain our first morning outside Siena in a refurbished bishop’s palace next to a monastery. Undaunted by the weather, we set out in our little car on SS222, the Chianti Trail. Sloping fields of vines in many straight lines; yellow-brown, very rocky soil; gnarled oaks, wrapped with green ivy, still clinging onto last year’s shiny brown leaves; regiments of cypress trees standing tall and proud. The road twisted through the hills past farms, fields and forest. We arrived in Castellani in Chianti, a little, walled hill-town that had been a Sienese outpost against the Florentines. What better activity at 10:00am on a rainy day is there but to go wine tasting. Eschewing the spittoon, I gulped down ... read more
