Well we barely made it to Siena... Who thought driving in Italy would be HELL, yes Hell. So we picked up the car in Florence (a standard which Dana told me I couldn't drive and she was right, I was frustrated with the bloody one way streets and the streets without proper signage, oh wait that's every street in Italy!!!) So we made it to Siena with two different instructions on how to easily get to our hotel. Yet we got lost not once but numerous times... But we did find a few gas stations and the train station! We tried to travel through the country side this time with Dana driving. Again the lack of signage got in the way and instead of heading south we went north through Chianti (the wine country). We tried ... read more

On our way to Siena we stopped off in a small town called Overto which was positioned high on top of a cliff top. There was a beautiful church there made out of green and white marble. We had a small snack and a walk around the cute little town. I was surprised to see a Lord of the Rings plate in one of the shops. Got back on the bus on our way to Siena, I love driving through Italy with all the beautiful sun flowers and undulating fields. Looking around could both see why Siena may be called Siena, all the buildings are the colour of burnt Siena. There are lovely streets which are enchanting and still have Medieval markings all over the walls, we think some were there to hold up torches along ... read more

The scenery on the drive out of France and into Italy was so dramatic you could almost ignore feeling that you’d been dropped into the middle of the Wacky Races. Italian Dick Dastardlies, whether actually or imagined, seemed determined to run us off the road but even this couldn’t detract from the breathtaking views. The only viable route was to take the toll road and skirt close by the Ligurian coast whilst witnessing a real feat of civil engineering (the “normal” non-toll way wasn’t really an option as it takes nearly three times as long). Despite the twists and turns of the coastline, the road stays pretty much straight and I reckon at least 60% of the journey was made through long dark tunnels or on elevated bridges stretching over deep ravines. A couple of hours ... read more

Puuh. Löysimme hostellimme vaivattomasti sillä se oli hyvin lähellä Porta Camolliaa, vanhan Sienan historiallista poh... read more

I'm not long back from a very nice, slightly classier jaunt to Italy than I'd usually partake in. My friend Cheryl's much-lauded wedding to her intended Mike closed a 2-year engagement with a rather lavish, lovely 2 day affair with 61 guests holed up in a 15th-century castle hidden on a hill about 30 minutes drive from Siena, in the Tuscan countryside - all paid up too, by the happy couple. I went with my bessie mates Sonia and Rosie and we booked ourselves an overnight stay in Siena after the wedding. First of all, I was struck by how picture postcard Tuscany is. That's why they make so much fuss about it. Now I'm usually of the opinion that the best holidays are those in, excuse my soinding crass, poorer countries: Eastern Europe, or South ... read more

In Carrera we toured two marble mines, one open pit and one below ground, with an old mining museum and a couple of shops that sold marble fashioned into beautiful objects including two pedestals I would have loved to take home with me. The price was very reasonable if only we didn't have to pay for shipping and duty! The marble from these mines has influenced construction and culture of the region since Roman times. Many of the cathedrals and monuments are built with the white-grey marble, including the statue of David that we hope to see in Florence. We drove on to Lucca, found a hotel there and spent the following day walking around the old town with an audio guide. I had never heard of the place before but it is certainly worth a ... read more

Hey everyone, we have now taken a bit out of our Italian tour. From Nice we kept heading east, through rather challenging coastal roads which were pretty hard to make any distance on. Just across the border we got stuck behind a guy moving a house at 11am..... This was pretty frustrating travelling so we bit the bullet and took on the pay motorways for the first time, letting us soar above each of the bays on the way on m, We still had a fair few hills around, which seem to attract rain for us so we did a quick walking tour of the center here. Genoa provided us with views of our first "stripey" church (see photos) as well as an interesting walk through some pretty narrow streets in the old center which have ... read more

Since we saw what we wanted to in Florence, we decided to use our last day there to take a day trip. Neil and Amy headed to Pisa, while I decided to see if I could get to both Siena and San Gimignano in a day. It was a day of transportation challenges. The first thing Neil and Amy encountered was a rail strike. Since service was severely reduced, they had to wait hours for a train to Pisa that wasn't canceled, and when one did show up, it was jam packed with other people who had also been waiting around for hours. I took the bus. Not because I was trying to avoid the rail strike we were only vaguely aware of, but because there is no rail line to San Gimignano. I had it ... read more

Arrived in Siena yesterday. After a couple of days of rain in Florence, the sun is shining and it is getting hot. Siena is very different to Florence. It feels much more ‘tourist town’ than the real city Florence was. I really like it for that reason though - loads of interesting shops to explore and amazing architecture at every turn. We have done some of the major sights today including some time at Il Campo - the major Piazza in Siena and reputedly one of the best Piazza’s in Italy. Also, seen Siena’s Duomo, which is highly adorned in typical Catholic Church style. Enjoyed another ice cream too (working my way through the flavours!).... read more

May is a lovely time to visit Italy, the sun is shining and the spring flowers coming out. Umbertide didnt prove a pleasant place. There was a medieval heart to the small town although this wasnt easy to find. The town had been obliterated by bombs during the 2nd World War. We sat over breakfast thinking about what we wanted to do during the week. Places to see and things to do were divided into what was important and urgent, what was important but not urgent and the rest which feel into the not urgent and not important. The last things would be visited the second week. Siena was our first destination and was our most urgent and most important destination. Parking was easy below the town but it left us a long walk uphill to the ... read more
