Monday Jan. 5th our next visitors arrived safely in Bologna! My (Kristi's) cousins Josh and Ashley started their travels in London and went to Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Florence before coming to see us in Bologna. They were quite tired from all of their travels and stays in hostels so we had a dinner at "Hotel Kopacz", relaxed and went for a little walk around Bologna. We woke up early on Tuesday to take a day trip to Siena and San Gimignano in Tuscany. Jason had Monday and Tuesday off for Italian holiday. San Gimignano is a very small town outside of Siena on a hill and they are famous for their architecture and wine! We wandered the narrow hilly streets taking in the views, browsing the shops and enjoying our 1st slice of pizza for ... read more

Well, I am officially terrible about keeping this updated. My goal for next semester is definitely to write more. I decided rather than trying to write everything that has been going on these past few months, which is impossible, I would include some random photos from various trips and things throughout the semester, from the first days to the last. The semester ended last week and all of the students sort of trickled out. Everyone is gone now, even most of the professors and other people who work here. I leave tomorrow evening for Austria on an overnight train and I'll be there for a week, until New Years. Then I'll be back in Siena to celebrate with a friend and her family in Siena. It's definitely hard to be away from home right now and ... read more

Luckily I was able to make 2 trips out to Siena over the past couple weeks. Its about an hour and a half away from Florence, still in the Tuscany region. The bus ride there is beautiful in itself of the Toscana countryside, hills of vineyards, olive trees, and old cottages and farms. I was amazed at how much bigger Siena was than I thought. Although it is mostly residential, it still holds many great tourist attractions because it is considered one of the best preserved medieval Italian city. It was amazing to see such a unique city partially still walled in from the Middle Ages. The narrow streets had some of the cutest boutiques and delicious restaurants. The center of the city is the Piazza Del Campo, a large semi-circle lined with restaurants. This square ... read more

After arriving late the night before we slept in and then had pizza for breakfast/lunch. Yum!! We spent the day walking around the narrow streets and getting lost and then found again and enjoying views from the city walls across the surrounding countryside. We went into an awesome cathedral with crazy black and white checked marble on the walls and floors. We also climbed the bell tower in the main piazza and got an amazing view! Cause our hostel had no kitchen we had to eat out..what a shame! For lunch we went to a cheap little local restaurant and Alice had home made spaghetti with mushrooms and Alex had pasta with chilli and tomato and sausage!Yum! and we also had a quarter litre of wine! I love having wine at lunch! Makes me feel like ... read more

Yesterday we had a bit of rain--but carried on and went to the beautiful town of Siena-- to see the famous church the 'Duomo'-- it was spectacular-- and surpringly uncrowded- due to the time of year-- and the rain. We had lunch in the square-- I had a wonderful tuscan bread soup and some Vino! -- Today the ladies went to the designer outlets-- and I had big plans to purchase gifts there-- but even the outlet prices were ridiclously expensive-- so I picked up a pair of walking shoes....and am hoping for gifts tomorrow. We are going on a guided tour in Florence tomorrow with Ed and Teresa Ritelli-- of the Uffitzi and the Acadamie-- it should be great and the weather is supposed to be better tomorrow! Love to you all! and we will ... read more

I have gotten way behind in writing. I am going to give a few random pieces of what has been going on here in the past few weeks… I am also going to post some pictures soon. To begin with, here’s a random funny language blunder of the week: I woke up early and was in the kitchen having breakfast and packing my lunch for school. Typically I either bring some kind of sandwich or leftover pasta, a banana, and a little package of biscotti. So, I made a salami and mozzarella sandwich and I was looking for the plastic wrap, which wasn’t where it normally is. My roommate Letizia walked into the kitchen and I asked her where to find the plastic wrap to wrap my sandwich. But I got the word for plastic wrap, ... read more
