Wednesday we decided to go on a trip around Lago de garda. This to avoid a lot of walking, because of the infected leg of Liz. The Antibiotics is kicking in slowly. The ride was beautiful. We packed a pick nick and set the Tom Tom, destination Lake de Garda. He took us on a lovely road, but not around Lake de Garda. There was a river to our left, but we also saw an Autobahn further down. No Lake. Lots of grapes growing everywhere, and we thought they used the Lake for irrigation and had dwindled into the size of a river. How silly. We do not have an Italian map you see. Anyway we found a lovely spot for lunch and continued to the chosen town on the Tom Tom. And than, there it ... read more

Day 31 A quick divert, Possibly to escape the crowds, or maybe the toilet we were situated next to. We decided to head north, by the Lake side road of Garda towards the Dolomites. They were not like the Alps, they had their own unique formation - more teeth-like than pointed. Since we arrived in Italy we had been slightly disappointed, we had covered approximately 2000 miles roads were quiet, lots of open country side. But as we got to the Lakes it was quite built up and the traffic was horrendous. As we travelled North along Lake Garda the traffic thinned, it was less built up- it was far more like we were expecting of Lake Garda, beautiful towns- and the Lake, unlike Maggiore and Como, it is a turquoise blue, more like the Interlaken ... read more

Most of the snow has melted but the higher tracks still cannot be walked. We took the track from the Hotel at Prato Piazzo in the Braies area to the Rifugio Vallandro at 2040m. Lindsay, Diego and myself headed off down the valley to the junction with the road at Carbonin and then onto Lake Landro where we met Piero who had come around the road by car. The scenery was truly spectacular today because of the clear skies and snowy tops. One has to be here to appreciate the majestic feel of the mountains. They are all around, have shear sides and soar up into jagged peaks. I’m sorry to admit it, but it would challenge Switzerland for breathtaking scenery (excepting New Zealand of course). We drove to Lake Misurina and gained great views of ... read more

Magic! I woke early to open the curtains and found a winter wonderland. “Lindsay, you’ve got to get out of bed to see this. Come on. It’s special”. “Huh, grunt”, but he did get up to look. What a contrast from yesterday. Last night we had rain and thunder in the mountains and then awoke to an almost whiteout of snow blanketing the landscape and cloud coming and going. We couldn’t leave until the snow plough came in and cleared the road. Rather ironic that it’s so hot down by the coast and so cold here. But it does make for a good night’s sleep. There was about 6 inches of snow on the ground and the trees were covered. We were supposed to pick Diego up from the station at Cortina but that wasn’t possible. ... read more

It is a travelling day today from Portogruaro to Braies in the Dolomites. A change of plans. Piero will drive us to Braies and Diego will come north by train tomorrow to Cortina. I feel sorry for Piero as his English is slightly worse than our Italiano so it made for a trip of silences interspersed with items that we did know or could indicate. Language can be a problem when you cannot string the words you know together. We left Portogruaro at 28 degrees (another hot day) and arrived to 8 degrees at Hotel Hohe at Prato Piazza in the Braies region in North Italy close to the Austrian border. We felt silly arriving in sandels when it was so cold and raining. Along the journey we stopped at a number of places only marred ... read more

A sleep in this morning before we departed for Italy - jusy 45 minutes from Seefeld. it was not snowing today - but as we climbed up toward the Brenner pass - the temperature droipped from+7C to +0.5C - just cold enough to get some snow flurries. Our destination was Bressanone/Brixen, a town of around 15,000 and just 30 kms from the border. They have a neat Christmas MArket here, as well as an impressive cathedral and monastery. Due to it being so close to X-mas, we encountered a traffic jam getting into the old town area. What should have taken us 10 minutes took around 25 minutes. The town was crowded with other sightseers. There was not as much snow as last year - when we saw several snowmen that had been built in the ... read more

“God created a world full of little worlds. “ Yiddish proverb A day without taking a photo is in many cases an ominous sign that the day was a wasted travel day. So when we found that we took no photo for 3 out of 4 days we knew we needed a change in plans. Our original plan was to slowly making our way up the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Relaxing on the beach and exploring the old cities. But we are not the beach relaxing kind. And after seeing Kotor and Dubrovnik all the old towns seem to look the same. The only day we did take a photos was the one day we did not stay near beach. Instead we were hiking all day in the nature reserve up in the mountains. Which ... read more

Very lucky with the weather today, even with snow at the top of the Stelvio. That is one long climb and bitterly cold descent. Took a different route to planned after that as there was no way I'd be able to get over the Monte Giovo before sunset, and couldn't afford to lose another 2 hours. So I went via Bolzano and am now somewhere about 15 miles NorthEast of there. Nothing much else to say really other than 3 days left, planned stops are out now and it's just as far as possible each day... ... read more

Remember how I was in Germany and missed Italy and was excited to return? Turns out I came back to Italy only to still be in Germany. Let me explain. Much of Trentino Alto Adige (NE Italy) used to be part of Austria until after WWI, when it was given to Italy as sort of a way to punish Austria. So, the architecture here is quite German and people often speak also German. I knew all this from last summer when I was in Bolzano, but I had no idea how different living with a more German family would be. The farm is called Maso Plaz and is Val di Non and it is beautiful, peaceful, and quite different from any other WWOOF place I´ve been. They produce fruits and vegetables like the others, but here ... read more

Ciao a tutti! I'm just going to get right into it... Italian Nightlife Italian summers are full of parties. Of course there are discos (clubs) which can be really cool with multiple dance floors and outdoor locations. But each little town has a summer party with tables of food and drinks for the whole family and a band and dance floor. Some bigger towns have larger parties where you can walk around to different little parties with different food and music and people. And remember that this is all taking place outside, in classic Italian towns with cobblestones, fountains, churches, etc. The concept is just beautiful. And then there are festivals which are almost the same thing but they may have a theme and last for days, like Art in the Street in Verduno where street ... read more
