We were up early this morning to get Daphne onto a train to Geneva at 7.30 which meant leaving Annone Veneto at 7.00am. We have enjoyed having Daphne as company and hope to meet with her again sometime in the future. It was also farewell to our Italian cousins for who knows how long. As always, we have been superbly cared for over the past week and will remember the pleasure of attending the wedding, getting ourselves around the Veneto region and having to communicate in gibberish Italian, for better or worse. We got there and fully appreciate the hospitality shown to us. Our destination in the morning was to Cortina d'Ampezzo where we were to meet Graham and Claudia for a catchup. The area had had thunderstorms so their trip to Tre Cima was put ... read more

14. Travel Blog Wednesday 10th September to Monday 15th September 2014. Italy - Vipiteno Wednesday 10th September 2014. Up and off to Vipiteno – Campsite Gilfenklamm – with views all round of the mountains. Called into the tourist office just on the next corner to get some information. We purchased a 3 day ‘Tour Card’ @ €25 each. This allows us to travel on all buses, trains, public cable cars, public museum entry over 3 consecutive days after validation. We had purchased one of these ‘Tour Cards’ in Chiusa in 2012 when we stayed there for 12 nights and visited all around The Dolomites. Vipiteno was one of the towns that we had visited for only one day in 2012 and we had wanted to come back to see the area. So that night, we planned ... read more

Cant believe we have only had 5 days off work so far feels like a lifetime. Been through a range of temperatures from 28.5 down to 16 and back up to 23 with sun and rain. Thighs are killing after yesterdays descent ... read more

Dolomites Trek, Northern Italy: 27 June – 6 July 2014 Robbo arranged our travel / transfer arrangements from Chamonix, France (where we ended the Tour Mont Blanc hike) to Italy via Verona on route to the Dolomites region (no fewer than 12 connections required in one day – buses, trains). We arrived safe and sound and enjoyed an amazing evening in beautiful Verona, it was magic full of music, opera, theatre and cafes and bars. This trip was unique in that we stayed in three (3) locations for 2 nights which meant we could day hikes or out/back / circuit trips rather than point-to-point. TO NOTE: This trip we did not arrange baggage transfers so we carried all our gear!!!!. The scenery was very beautiful with the Dolomites declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in August ... read more

So, while enduring multiple weeks of cold, rainy weather in northern Europe I realized that I couldn’t go without a dose of Italy for the summer. I wanted somewhere that I could get out and do a little hiking and enjoy nature but that also was warm and had great food – so northern Italy was it for 5-6 days. I chose a couple places that I hadn’t been to: Trento and Malcesine. Trento was definitely my favorite of these two locations because of the laid-back atmosphere with a great local feel. I stayed at a nice place called B&B Eden that was well located just between the train station and the main square. Eden had good wifi, nice continental breakfasts out each morning, and comfortable rooms. While in Trento there was a local medieval celebration ... read more

We had left our caravan last summer in Augsburg, Bavaria, so we had a long drive down there, broken up by visiting friends. We arrived at Augsburg about 12.30 and the site was closed for dinner. However, we found our caravan which seemed dirty but OK and not, as we feared, full of gypsies! Next day we spent some time cleaning it and putting things away so we were then soon off for Italy. The sat nav decided not to take us the straightforward motorway route via Munich but through the hills around Oberammergau, past Innsbruck and into the Dolomites. We had been used to the cold and rain of Germany and even Austria but as we drove into Italy the skies cleared and the sun shone. We had decided that a campsite near Trento on ... read more

For the last weekend of our trip, I had booked two nights in a small alpine style hotel in the Dolomites. We had an hours drive from Innsbruck to the town of Bressanone. The scenery was lovely, as it had been all along. Now the mountains were much starker with lots of sharp peaks. At the end of summer there wasn't much snow and the bare mountains rose up dramatically against the deep blue sky. The rolling green hills and valleys were much the same as in Austria but just a little less cared for. It didn't seem that every hill had been mowed and the hedges along the roads were not all perfectly trimmed. All the towns also have German names and people are mostly German speaking but Bressanone/Brixen seemed to me to have a ... read more
