Day 11 Friday July 19. Last walking day before we check out tomorrow. The week has gone very quickly! Again we join the easy group for a walk along the valley immediately behind the hotel – so no transport or gondola rides. The valley is really like a box canyon, and the walk comprised 15kms and around 500 metres ascent and descent. For the first time we are walking in forest and it is totally different but enjoyable nonetheless. As with other days we are among cattle as most of this is working farming /grazing land. All of the cattle have cow bells so its quite weird hearing them all as they chew away. The initial track in also included the 14 Stations of the Cross – carved skilfully out of tree trunks. There was some ... read more

Day 10 Thursday July 18. With adequate improvement in Chris’ knee, we decided to join the ‘easier’ walking group again today. Today we head off by chartered bus over into the next valley. We walked to the gondola which again took us to a high plane. Today’s walk sees us head off to a distant ‘Hutte’ along a fairly rambling and undulating track – but not too many difficult ups or downs before lunch. That all sounds too easy so Hughie decided to step in and throw rain at us for the first time on a walk. Chance to test all of our wet weather gear. The surrounding thunderstorms were a little worrying as we were very exposed but they were safely distant. Lots of different wild flowers here – including a couple of Lily varieties ... read more

Day 9 Wednesday July 17. So after our relax and rehab yesterday, off to the physio we headed. It turns out he was very good and spoke passable English. He soon got Chris’confidence and was able to ascertain that there was no structural damage. After 45 mins of diagnosis massage and therapy he pushed Chris onto a bike for 10 mins to enable her to get some faith in the knee and reduce some of the fluid build-up. He recommended morning and night gym bike (our lodge has one) and a gentle walk tomorrow (today), but on good surface. So there is a sealed rail trail that joins all of the towns in this valley so we headed off towards Ortisei – the largest of the towns. We had the fall back of being able to ... read more

Day 7 Monday July 15. Breaky and sandwich routine is second nature now as we head off to our hard walk. We leave on the Gondola right in the middle of town and we would return on the same equipment later. The walk is again on the high plain and effectively walking right around a huge mountain. This way we get to see into the next valley along as well as all of the way to Austria. The walk was stated as 9 miles (14kms) but in fact this was an unfortunate slip of the tongue as it turned out to be 20kms! This was important as discussed later….. The walk is graded difficult not only because of the distance but also because of the elevation gain and loss (900metres each for this walk – and ... read more

Day 6 Sunday July 14. Nice breaky although the only hot choice is one boiled egg. Magnificent cereal fruit bread ham and cheese choices though. Plenty of food. Cut lunches are interesting. The hotel will make you a sandwich but at Eu8 ($12), they don’t represent good value. So the deal is a walk to the town (nobody pre-prepares sandwiches), and the supermarket will make them up for you if you first go to the bread/roll counter, have them slice it (a must), then take the bread to the deli in the bag with the price sticker on it, and they will add the filling (primarily ham and/or cheese), add the incremental stickers onto the bag then you take it to the register. Very quaint but by the end, you have a decent roll at a ... read more

Day 5 Saturday July 13. Admin day/ Checkout and across to the station for our trip to Bolzano. All went well although we did lose wifi at ¾ time of the Port Hawthorn game and the game was still in the balance …… As you would imagine, qwe left with plenty of time and were the first in our coach on the train. Just as well as the luggage capacity was minuscule although we did eventually find room for our two largest bags. The rest went into the overhead. The train was packed with cases lying everywhere. Fast and comfortable although there wasn’t much leg room. Countryside was interesting and we got into farming land more quickly than we thought. Passed through Florence and Verona and a few other stops. It was interesting to note the ... read more

The sun takes a while to pierce the valley as the mountain sides are so steep but when it arrived it had a pleasant warmth to it and you could almost see the spring flowers and leaves growing. While we were walking up to the church yesterday we spied what we thought looked like a road through the forest of pines on the other side of the valley. It appeared to head up towards the end of the valley from where we hope to get an even better view of the big mountain that dominates that end of the valley. If there is a track or road that leads us home by a different route then that would complete a good circuit. We haven't skimped on breakfast recently and it has set us up well for the day ... read more

Missing our daily gelatos but there is nothing we can do as there are no stores selling them here! We both woke this morning short of breath and we can only put it down to the altitude of about 1400 mtrs above sea level we are at.Hopefully that won't put us off some walks we have got planned for the next couple of days. When we arrived yesterday the temperature was cold and it is easy to see why spring is only just coming to the area with the flowering trees yet to break their buds and green leaves only just starting to show. However in contrast the grass on the mountainside around the houses is green, very green almost as if the grass has said 'right, now the snow cover has gone I am really going to do ... read more

We just love boiled eggs for breakfast and we indulged again this morning before packing up and heading off for the mountains close to the Austrian border. Not that we should be without a facility to cook eggs anyway we want as our next stop is in an apartment with cooking facilities for 3 nights. We had the feeling that the holiday season is starting to show signs of being near as the guest numbers in the Hotel Germania along with the school party was higher than we have had in other places we have stayed. But it is time to leave the thousands of umbrella stands and deck chairs to the incoming throngs and head off for more remote places at least for a few days. Vicky had worked out a route that was certainly shorter in ... read more

Na drie weken grieperig/verkoudheid ... read more
