At 7am on Friday morning 56 very excited (albeit bleary-eyed) international students met at Bologna bus station to drive to the Dolomites for a fun-filled weekend of snow. The journey took less than five hours and passed quickly with the help of “L’era Glaciale” (Ice Age in Italian) and Andrea (head of ESN) working his magic with the microphone. We arrived a little after midday and due to ESN’s undying enthusiasm for “passeggiate” (walks) set out on one almost as soon as we stepped off the coach. We took sledges with us and walked along a track through a valley alongside a stream. There was so much snow and it was really beautiful. We had a few mishaps with finding the route, due to copious amounts of lovely soft fresh snow, and I found myself several ... read more

I said this about many places but we really didn’t intent to go to Italy to go skiing. The closest we ever got to plan a visit in Italy was Kellie's wish to rent a villa in Tuscany and learn cooking from an Italian Nona. Anyway I convinced her that December is not the best time to visit and sit in a cold villa so this plan was off the table. The reason why we went to Italy was me not planning anything (see that's a good thing) and being really surprised that after I told friends that I will be in Stuttgart sometime in the New Year the reply was “but we won’t be”. Wasn't a good conversation until he mentioned that they go skying and that there is a chance of some space being ... read more

Alright, this one was incredible. The pics tell the story better than me. So lets just start with how cheap this trip was. Train ticket to Trento: 5 euro Bus ticket to Giustino/Madonna di Campiglio: 4 euro = 9 euro to get to the slopes Hotel: 30 euro a night x 4 = 120 euro Lift passes: 25 euro a day x 4 =100 euro Skis: 25 euro a day x 4 =100 euro Food and fun x 4 = 60 euro So, for the entire trip, I spent 400 euro, or 500 bucks, for 4 days of skiing. Anyone from next semester that reads this, PLEASE, go skiing. It's the cheapest trip you can get and is easily the most fun! Moving on. So the day before this trip, I didn't even know what hotel ... read more

This is Jorgen's account of the Pergine Castle, which we woke up to every morning in Italy. Jeff took the kids one afternoon. I had to sit this one out, as I was battling some severe hip pain and knew I wouldn't be able to make the hike in. Just to give you a little background, apparently many of the castles in Italy are privately owned as they are expensive to maintain. Many are "converted" to art galleries, restaurants and hotels. This one is all three, but I personally think the "art" might be pushing it! "When I saw the castle from Mary's house, I thought "coolish". My Dad took me and Emma and Signe to the castle one day. When we were driving there, I thought about the Lego 'Good Castle' that I want to ... read more

Bolzano - Ten days in the sky If you enjoy the excitement of exploring the worlds wonders coupled with the Baccean joy of indulging in local wines: Think South Tryol, think The Dolomites. This region in Northern Italy is so far north that half the population speaks German, which is great as it means you get Italian style and cafes, hand in hand with great salamis and fabulous cheeses. All just a few hours by train from Milan. Moka and I based ourselves at Moosebaur campsite, nestled behind an orchard at the base of the valley wall and only a fifteen minute bike ride from the town centre. Bolzano/Bolzen is a European town built around Piazza Walther, (named after a local poet of the 1800’s) and the duomo, a splendid example of gothic architecture, and surrounded ... read more

The morning following our trip to Venice was glorious - sunny, not a cloud in the sky and close to 70 degrees. Rudi (Rudi is Maria’s first cousin’s Italian husband) declared that it was a perfect day to head to the mountains. I thought I had time for a quick run before we left, but in my typical state of oblivion I failed to realize that the plan was to leave pronto so we could get lunch in the small ski village of Arraba Reba. Many businesses close in Italy from 12-3 and there was concern no restaurants would be open. Luckily my run was short and I only set us back about 30 minutes. Running in Pergine is a bit of challenge compared to Sweden. From our house there are multiple paved walking/biking paths in ... read more

We’re lucky to have connections. My cousin, Mary, has lived with her husband and two girls in Northern Italy for about 14 years. As a lover of all food, especially anything remotely resembling pasta, bread or cheese, I’ve wanted to experience Italy and all that it has to offer, foodwise. To do so in a country famous for breathtaking views is a bonus. Jeff and I saw the girl’s “fall break” as a chance to do just that. Mary suggested Ryanair as a low cost carrier and we found round trip tickets for the entire family for about $700…not bad, considering one ticket from the states would be at least double that, so we booked the flight into Bergamo. We’ve flown low cost carriers before, in fact, Sun Country Airlines was our mainstay during the Jersey ... read more

I just came back from an absolutely gorgeous part of the Alps, the Dolomites. I went there on Monday to join Lukas and a group of pilots who were there for a flight safari. We stayed in Campitello di Fassa, which is situated at the bottom of the Col Rodella, from which we were to fly. I joined the group on Monday night for dinner. There were, as usually, only three hangglider pilots, André, Dieter, and myself. The others were paraglider pilots, amongst them one more girl, Leonie. They all had arrived on Saturday and knew each other already, so I had to struggle to learn all the names in one evening (which I am not very good at, unfortunately). On Tuesday, the weather was fine. So after having a quick look at the landing field, ... read more

passo dello stelvio (stilfserjoch) and on into Switzerland - Shaken, not Stirred? I guess there are other easier ways to get from Italy to Switzerland, and I hadn’t really mentioned these to Jen. She didn’t seem to mind the idea of going over the Stilvio Pass. I would have been keener myself if it wasn’t for the rain….. The Stelvio pass? - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stelvio_Pass It is the second highest (just) mountain pass in the alps - over 2700m, made up of 48 hairpin bends. I had quickly looked at some motorcyclist blogs about the pass, and as with Nürburgring you kind of wish you didn’t. If you don’t like tight hair pin bends on extremely narrow roads on near vertical slopes don’t go. If you like that sort of thing and looking at squads of expensive Italian ... read more
