Bella giorno Debi and I went to a British Pub for dinner last night. The birre (McFarlands Golden- From Ireland on tap) was great, the burgers not so much. But I suppose we couldn't expect much. We wanted a break from pure Italian and now we know (at least until we find a place that is better food-wise) not to stray too far from the local fare, which BTW has been awesome so far. We ate at about 2100 which is the norm here, and got there just in time for the last period of a football match between Roma and Ulrechia (I think) - the crowd was decidedly rooting for Roma so I guess now I will as well - They won 2-1 with a great goal by Tutti at the last second. Finally arrived in Torino. Started Thursday, 7 April at 1400. Orlando > Washingtom Dulles > Roma > Torino. Debra met me at airport at 1430 on Friday, 8 April. Took taxi to Principi Di Piemonte, our home away from home until we find an apartment. The city has its beauty and its not so great areas but overall I think it will be great here. The Alps are ever present - sort of like CoSprings but the city skyline with its old world feel certainly differentiates the view. The hotel room is comfy but we know it will get cramped soon. We are already bumping int each other, that's not so bad. I'll post some pictures of the room when we get it cleaned up right now its sort of a disaster area. We had a ... read more

September 2009 A MINI TRAVELOGUE by Brian William Carter CHAPTER ONE I’m not sure whose idea it was. My wife, Janet, mentioned that as it was our fifth wedding anniversary in September, it would be nice to revisit our honeymoon destination of Stresa on Lago Maggiore in north-west Italy. Well that set the old mental wheels whirring into action, and I reviewed my imaginary list of things to do (we all have one), and there it was, number three, between visiting New Zealand and a cruise round the Norwegian fjords. Drive across Europe. This seemed a perfect opportunity to tick this one off the list. Now, I have driven in Europe before, but not to any great extent. There was the day trip in January 1998, when Janet and I took advantage of a special offer ... read more

Besides friends and showing me my birthplace, one of daddy's reasons for coming to Italy was for wine. I do not know if I believe him or not but he said that most of the wine was for me as it was the 2005 year when I was born. He says that Barolo wine can last many years so I can drink it with him when I am older. Whatever....for now I just like smelling it, but daddy was impressed when the first one I smelled I said smelled like cherries. However, I was more interested in meeting the people, playing with their animals or in their yards, and eating their food. The first winery was Elio Grasso, the only winery on this trip that Daddy never went to. Elio's wife, Marina, took us on a ... read more

Now it was time to drive back to Italy where we would spend the rest of our time. We drove to Allesandro's house but on the way we stopped by a small town named Recco for some focaccia di recco. It was soooo good; very doughy and cheezy and daddy and I loved it. We ate like pigs. Then back Alessandro's house. A few of his friends came over and they were very nice. Daddy loved his basement/cellar with wine older than he was. We all went out for dinner to a restuaurant in a small town "in the middle of no where" called Berzano San Pietro . They served "Fritto Misto alla Piemontese", which was basically a whole bunch of things fried from chicken, to mushrooms from apples to chocolate and a few other things ... read more

Another sunny day dawned over Lago Maggiore, and not being the type to sit still, we plotted out an active agenda for our transition day between Stresa and Firenze. Since our train didn't leave until mid-afternoon, we had plenty of time to hike part way up Mt. Mattarone, through the small hillside villages of Carciano and Somerano to be blessed with killer views of the lake. Then back down to Stresa and a bit of time spent exploring town and the back streets, which had only received a cursory glance from us so far. We boarded the Eurostar at 3:30 and experienced first class travel for the first (and probably only) time on this trip. Large comfy seats, plenty of leg-room and drinks and snacks served. The airline industry should get some pointers... The highlight of ... read more

Stress-free Stresa lived up to its reputation today, as we found out that YESTERDAY was the last day many of the tourist attractions were open, including the famous Borromean Palace and Gardens on Isola Bella, and that starting today the ferry schedule and destinations served are now much reduced. Although we were disappointed, the situation allowed for a more mellow day, and we found enough to amuse ourselves... We caught the ferry to Isola Bella, anyway, and had a look around. The island felt deserted, save for the ubiquitous booths selling flea market goods lining the street leading from the ferry. We wandered the narrow, cobblestone streets, and found the only things open were the tourist shops. Since the ferry didn’t return for an hour, we were “forced” to have a look, and ended up making ... read more

The day dawned gray and drizzly-what else is new? Despite the weather we decided to head into Interlaken a little earlier than necessary for our train connection to Brig in the south of Switzerland (where we would then connect with the train to Stresa). Thought we’d check out the town and maybe get in a little last-minute Swiss souvenir shopping. See Interlaken scenes below. We also had a bit of time to explore Brig between trains, so we headed for the historic section at the top of the town, where wandered around a bit, discovering the unique architecture of the 17th century Stockalper Palace. Back on the very crowded train, we were dismayed to see raindrops hitting the windows again, but just about the time we arrived in Stresa it stopped. (By the way, we noted ... read more

I have had a great time in Turino, it is a beautiful city with some panoramic views and alot of parks and woods surrounding it. Marta and her Mum have been extremely hospitable and taken me to see alot of their city. I have been getting on with Laura really well, we seem to have alot in common and I have definetly made a new friend. I of course can speak no Italian and Laura's english is limited but we have still managed to communicate. I am going to Venice today by myself, a little bit nervous but i am sure I will manage the trains etc. I am really hoping the Saints win the grand final at home today as it would be dreadful if collingwood won (sorry Christine). Happy 50th birthday Russell. Will write ... read more

On Monday we caught the train to Mantova and visited The San Felices (Emilys first host family). Marcia made a huge dinner crepes with pumpkin, cheese and mushrooms, delicious but veeeeeeery filling, followed by vegetables and insalata, then lemon cake and finished off with meloncello (like limoncello but with melon). I was very proud of myself as my Mum bought me up to eat everything when being entertained. On Tuesday Bruno and Mina , the Nonna and Nona took us back to the station (really nice grandparents who said I looked like Emilys sister). We are now in Turin with Marta and her family, Very hospitable people, with Ems help I am understanding most of what I am hearing. Turin looks like a much more beautiful city than Milan, not as many modern buildings and much ... read more
