This morning we met our new tour group and once again it's a full load. The maximum number for a Back Roads tour is 18. Everyone seems lovely plus there are 6 of us from the previous tour. This time we have a couple of New Zealanders as well as two ladies from Canada. Otherwise, the rest of us are Aussies. We left our beautiful hotel at 8:30am and met our new bus driver, Andre. We only needed to drive a short distance for the first part of our tour, as were about to explore the historic centre of Naples. We met our local guide Marco and were kitted up with Whisperers (allowing us to listen to Marco without having to crowd around him). We commenced our walk through the old town as Marco informed us ... read more

An earlier than usual wake-up call was in order this morning, as Francesco and his family (wife Anna, daughter Lucia, and son Luigi) were at our door by 8:45 AM for the 2-hour drive to visit the Greek and Roman ruins at Paestum, a small town in the countryside, about 30 miles south of Salerno. The bambini, 5-year-old fraternal twins, were very well behaved, and we enjoyed many chuckles while observing their antics throughout a very long day. We arrived at the site of the ruins in Paestum (known as Poseidonia to the Greeks, who settled in this area during the 6th-century B.C.) at around 10:30 AM. The site itself is in a very bucolic setting, surrounded by green fields and wildflowers, with rolling hills as a backdrop. Although skies were overcast, the temperature rose to ... read more

Geo: 40.4238, 15.0078Sorry, the experience Bird says was nowhere close to the title. We drove the Amalfi Coast to the Greek City of Paestum where even tight wad Rick Steves says don't drive yourself. Actually, we considered his advice but couldn't find a taxi for the two hour drive. So we just enjoyed ourselves! We did, however, click way too many pictures, and we seem to be enjoying them more so including additional ones for you poor unfortunate recipients. The drive was not as harrowing as Lake Como, perhaps as we have become a bit accustomed to Italian drivers. Nonetheless, the damn motorcycles wore us out. They would pass on hairpin curves and expect cars to move out of the way, although we were bigger. We concluded driving on this road was simply their Sunday thrill. ... read more

Took an early morning boat ride from Positano to Salerno. Quick and easy. There weren't too many people on the trip and staying up top is perfectly fine if you have an motion sickness issues and also to avoid the gas smell of being below. It's about a 15 minute walk from the docks to the train station. We had already purchased all of our regional train tickets in Naples, but there are kiosks and workers here too. Just remember that you may need to validate the ticket before getting on the train (ours were prevalidated by the machine). We had a light snack and a lovely goodbye to Sarah at a coffee shop on the strip just around the corner from the train station. If you do not have toilet paper or napkins, you will ... read more

After the hustle and bustle of city life which is Naples we felt rather set free as we drove away and out of the grime. It took some while as we hit rush hour Naples and stood in traffic going nowhere. Suzy's destination for the day further south and the Greek Temples of Paestum. We have been before . Glenn will have seen them three times when we visit tonight and I have seen them twice . You can't have too much of a good thing. Why are we going again I hear you ask? Well I read somewhere that the temples are lit up at night and I wanted to see them in a different light. So where is Suzy? For the first time we are on a hacienda agriculturismo. An olive farm which also ... read more

A note to my loyal blog readers: This is my last entry--yay! About time, since we've been home for 2 weeks! I just want to tell you all that your encouragement and positive comments spurred me to carry on while on the trip, fighting with bad internet connections and too little free time in which to blog. Once home, I felt committed to finished up my take on our adventures for my own record/memories. I appreciate those of you who have continued to follow along, clicking through my ever increasing text and number of photo uploads! ;-) Cheers to La Bell'Italia--hope you all have your own adventures there someday that you'll share with me... ****************************************************************************************************** It's hard to believe today was our last full day in Italy--and full doesn't begin to describe it! After deciding knee replacement was not critically necessary, decided to head over to Salerno and Paestum. The coast from Salerno to Paestum was the site of the Allied landing in September 1943. The joint British-American assault was designed to keep the Germans fighting rather than replenishing, to keep the German troops tied up so they could not be sentenced to help in Russia, and to give the Allies a route though what Churchill called the soft underbelly of Europe. As Gen. Mark Clark later remarked, "That was some gut". Although some of these objectives were achieved, Italy with its mountainous terrain proved to be a tough slog. The Americans landed mostly near Paestum, including the 36th (Texas) Infantry Division, thousands of whose men Clark pushed into a suicidal attack at the Rapido River later with the ... read more

Geo: 40.4238, 15.0078 We got up Wednesday morning early to catch the boat to Naples. We found the bus to the Archaeological museum and headed there. There are alot of frescoes, mosaics, pottery and statues from Pompeii. There was a mosaic there that had over a million pieces of tile about 1/16x1/16 each. Its amazing that so much stuff survived the volcano. I forgot to talk about the weather. It has been in the mid eightys and sunny every day. The only bad thing is the humidity. It has been very humid, about 85%. By the end of our day we are pretty ragged. We left the museum and followed a Rick Steve's tour of Naples. We walked from the museum down to the boat docks. We stopped for pizza. Naples is supposedly the birthplace of ... read more

Paestum - the best kept secret in Italy. 3 Greek temples set in acres of wild grasses, wild geraniums and inhabited by lizards. Fabulously quiet with few visitors apart from the odd school trip. The whole site had an air of the 1960's when few tourists ventured to the area. It was hard to believe just how isolated the place felt. No hoards of tourists or children just peace and quiet to experience a complex of greek buildings. Sometimes I think it would be better to keep quiet about such a place and keep it for myself. Tourists would spoil it. Our visit was on one of those days when the sun blazed down. We started by visiting the aree di sosta at the end of the road which served as a car park for the ... read more
