At the end of April we took a family trip to Italy with our two adult sons. We aren’t usually in the same country without obligations at the same time. We haven’t been on a holiday together for many years, we had our ups and downs, but on the whole, we had a good time. It was also interesting to compare my son’s experiences to my own, how they experienced places and which places inspired them to return and how other places that I am definitely marking down for further exploration in the future didn’t have the same effect on them – more like, “that was nice, what’s next?”. We flew into Rome and picked up the car my son rented and drove – a nice experience for Micha who got to be a passenger and ... read more

Wow! Don't make this trip at night or when you are tired or intoxicated! It is crazy, wild, gorgeous, crazy crazy! cars are not designed to have side mirrors when they pass within a hairs breadth of each other, walls and precipices either side. From Naples (Napoli) onwards the roads soared above the coast, scaling the volcanic mountains (remember Pompeii), descending into tortuous turns and inhabited by crazy Italian drivers! What a start to first day driving on the wrong side of the road. Trip took us from 12:30 until 7 pm! (Micheal says - Anna the amazing) -it was like driving through a crazy Walt Disney extravaganza. We will take our time exploring this amazing cliff top world and post photos from the daylight hours tomorrow. We have 5 glorious days booked in this wonderland ... read more

The ferry from Igomenitsu to Brindisi was a model of Greco-Italian organisation and efficiency – in other words it was late, chaotic, and ill equipped - but it, eventually, got us to almost where we wanted to go. We'd expected to dock close to the city but when we disembarked we were in a desolate, isolated industrial port that didn't cater too well for foot passengers. Given no other choices we set off to walk to town which maps.me showed us was ~5km away. Just after we'd set out a taxi heading into the port to pick up another couple of passengers stopped and offered to take us as well, we jumped at the chance. A few minutes later we pulled up close to where we'd been expecting to get off the ship in the first ... read more

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529We'll start with a word of warning. Bird says should you not be as enamored with Rome as HP, this may become a bit tiresome. HP retorts who could not be? So, lets chat about the museum in Naples. A very rich Pope in the 16th century collected a ton of Roman art, and after Pompeii was discovered in the 18 century, the works from Pompeii were added to the collection he previously passed to his heirs. The museum is essentially the Pope's collection and works from Pompeii and Herculean.HP was in Roman heaven, while Bird was just there. Just to think about what was setting in Roman living rooms, kitchens, etc. was ecstatic for him. Wow. He knows everyone will be glued to the pictures as he was taking them. They will follow. How ... read more

Saturday morning(3 days ago), we collected a car and attempted to leave Palermo. It took us quite some time to execute that escape. We were travelling to Agrigento and on the way, I learnt that no one driving in Italy respects the speed limit and that because I was trying to respect said limits, I was overtaken by every single vehicle which came up behind me including the motorini! I too soon started speeding, but it didn't make any difference; they all still overtook me. I had to cross up and over the city of Agrigento in order to arrive at our Hotel near the coast. It's not a very attractive city, at least, the newer parts of the town aren't. This drive into the town proved hellish and I hope to never see that labyrinthine ... read more

Took one of those super fast, super comfortable trains from Florence to Naples. Did some bag checking so we wouldn't be on the train with our junk (more on this later) and then headed to the Circumvesuviana to get to Pompeii. These trains are on the lower level, stairs are in line with track 13, you go down and go as far left as possible. You can only purchase tickets there. Take a picture of the time tables so you know when to expect trains. This is a VERY VERY cheap way to get down to Pompeii or Sorrento. You're not going to beat the price. You're also not going to get to buy the tickets you want: we checked our bags because we wanted to come back and eat in Naples and wanted to get ... read more

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529Sadly we had to leave our lovely hotel in Amalfi and drive to Naples. Instead of going over the mountain roads we drove along the coastal road ,which is much prettier though still very bendy, to the bottom of the motorway to Naples. Our sat-nav duly took us through Naples, and within striking distance of the hotel it told us to turn right into a one way road going the other way. We went round and round trying to enter the one way system beyond the hotel but still came out below it. On the last attempt a local saw us and waved us up the road the wrong way to arrive right in front of the hotel. So the sat-nav was right - on some occasions you can ignore one way signs!! First ... read more

I woke up at 5.30am and could see Mt Vesuvius we arrived on time at 7am got up had breakfast and headed off the boat escorted by Martha, all the taxi drivers swooped on us as we walked out, we were going to do the hop on hop off but a driver convinced us to take his cab and he would take us to Pompeii and then around the city for a better price, I was a bit nervous about being in a local cab when I saw all the dents and scrapes along the side of his car, but all was good he knew all the quick ways to go, dropped us at Pompeii for 2 hrs, man it is huge it was like a maze it would take a good 3 hrs to walk ... read more

We have to thank Andrew Graham Dixon the historian, the Italian cook Locatelli his friend and Di Mosta the Italian historian for us venturing into Naples . Whether I shall praise them and thank them for the tip to come here or curse them remains at the moment open ended. We hoped for the best as we had read some dreadful reports on Naples and its filthy streets in Rough Guides and blogs and were aware of its mean and edgy feel but as we had souls we hoped that deep down we would find something worthwhile in the city. And so we left our overnight stop. Our Bangladeshi friend did indeed open up for us and we hit the road heading for the big city. All the while hoping for the best but expecting the ... read more
