This morning I took the fast train from Rome to Naples. It really is fast, too. For awhile we paralleled the highway and we were zipping past traffic on the autostrada at a great rate (see picture). I arrived at Napoli Centrale train station and caught the Metro, ie subway, to the archeological museum. This museum contains all the art works that have been recovered from Pompeii and it also contains a large collection of sculpture that was excavated from the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. The latter is quite remarkable and would fit into an art museum anywhere (see picture). The former has a narrower fan base, but since I will be seeing Pompeii in person tomorrow, I count myself among those interested in the Pompeian frescoes, statues, and mosaics (see picture). After viewing the ... read more

Everyone is excited to be leaving and heading for Italy. I am anxious to see Lufthanza's new Airbus 380. That is a big plane. 10 across seating. But, I will say it was a very smooth ride. Took off around 4PM Saturday and was in the air 10 hours, and landed at 1:35 Sunday afternoon, of course my body thought it was early Sunday morning. So, if you are taking morning and evening medication, just how do you figure out when it is morning or evening? We had dinner at the beginning of the trip, and breakfast somewhere inbetween. That must have been morning, even though it was 11 at night CDT. We landed in Frankfurt and took another Airbus to Naples, a much older Airbus 321. We landed in Naples, and I must say, it ... read more

Now usually I find blogging about my life at sea rather monotonous and boring, BUT now there is change! For the first time since the Oasis started cruising the Caribbean back in 2009 we took a break from the Eastern/Western Caribbean cruises and pointed the ship East to Europe. This is all part of the plan to drydock the ship in Rotterdam for 2 weeks in October. There aren't many drydocks available for a ship this large so the company sent us for a couple weeks of cruising based out of Barcelona to show off the ship before we head to the dock. There will be quite a few projects going on during drydock but mostly it's just planned 5 year maintenance. The crossing was pretty much non eventful. We had extremely good weather. It was ... read more

Naples redeemed itself for me on this trip. (We had had a bad experience at the train station many years ago, were taken by a swindler who boarded all our bags (9 of us) onto a cart, then wouldn't release them until we paid him 50 euros, which then was almost $90. ) So I took the walking tour of Naples shore excursion from NCL, great to get out into the sunshine and see the beautiful architecture and find out the history of this great city core. Then the fun began. We went down, down, down into caverns dug out as cisterns for the city. As we walked along I was surprised to hear so much history of these caverns and tunnels under the city, from Kings needing to get between castles, through World War II ... read more

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529Today we were awakened by the sound of thunder. There was no rain at the time but there were clouds and noise. We arrived in Naples shortly after we got out of bed. We met in Cabanas again before our excursion. Then off to the Walt Disney Theater for our meeting time.We then boarded our bus and rode to the base of Mt Vesuvius where we switched to 4 wheel drive vehicles that took us up a bumpy, windy dirt road to 1000 feet where we hiked an additional 1000 feet up a 40% grade to the summit of the volcano. While we were exploring the caldera the clouds rolled in and a thunder storm started. The lighting actually struck near enough that some people were knocked off their feet. The rain started as we ... read more
