it's been a while since i've written a proper blog (and this one won't be too long either)...my apologies on that...i've been a bit busy trying to squeeze the most out of the eurail pass that marc and i got. we did a WHILRWIND tour of scandinavia - if we were't sleeping or on a boat or hiking we were on a train, there was no downtime at all. norway was spectacularly beautiful. took a fjord cruise down the longest and deepest fjord in the world. cliffs that went straight up into the sky and straight down to the water. train rides through mountain passes and valleys...ferry rides through tiny islands to even tinier villages. our plan to get to the UK was to take a ferry from stavanger norway to newcastle or up through the ... read more

Yay!! We just got our internet back, it wasn't working yesterday at all. So yesterday we took a drive up to Connemara, Clifden and Lettefrack, in what the Irish call the wild west. The roads are not nearly wide enough to be two ways, but they are, as I said before, it's pretty terrifying. That area is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. There are mountains everywhere, and they're just covered in rocks and grass, and little ponds and lakes. Mom almost ran over sheep a few times too. We ended up going into Lettefrack because thats where Kylmore Abby is (a beautiful "house" that is now a nunnery/girls school). It was absolutly breathtaking. Not only is the house georgous, but the grounds are amazing. After getting lost for about an hour ... read more

Having loosely organised to meet a friend (Noel) from my overland trip to China, I came to the realisation that all I had was his e-mail address and the town he lived in in Ireland (Moycullen, Galway). Following frantic writing of e-mails without reply I decided to track him down. All I will say is that I am glad I was in Ireland where everybody seems to know one another!! Admittedly I thought Moycullen was in the centre of Galway, but how wrong I was. Starting off with a trip to the Tourist information Office in Galway, I was surprised how helpful they were when I said:" This is a long shot but I am looking for a friend in Galway by the name of Noel O'Neill. I told them that he lived in Moycullen, but ... read more

Having arrived in Ireland just over a week and a half ago and survived my first hangover in Waterford, I subsequently progressed westwards towards Cobh (pronounced Cove) where the Titanic was to set sail from on her last journey. In a former life when things got tough, the superiors used to call it character building. Well I can honestly say that I have been doing some character building stuff during this past week and a half as I have never experienced so much shitty weather as I have done in Ireland. It has rained absolutely every single day, oh apart from one day on the way up to the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast, where we had a little sunshine but I was cycling into Gale force winds. You can't have everything I suppose! ... read more

I need to come up with some better names for these entries don't I!! Welcome to Ireland where it has rained 60 days straight...luckily it only rains for a little while then the sun comes out, but none the less still worst June/July on record! Like as in EVER!! Are you hearing me people...what happened to Summer. I didn't bring enough warm clothes with me! Ireland is so much better than London and the people are so much nicer and I just love their accent. I can't hear the words three and thirteen enough, it cracks me up everytime! And the kids when they talk is just too cute. I spent 2 days in Dublin which was nice, did the touristy things and went to Temple Bar at night to hear traditional Irish music and mingle ... read more

WOW Ireland. It was Claires choice to come here but boy I'm sure glad she did! It is beautiful. Im still amazed that after all the traveling i've done, the scenery i've seen and architecture i've gawked at, i can still be amazed by a new country. The countries across europe are so completly different from each other. All separte worlds of history. Ive so far experienced Dublin city and Galway. Dublin is wonderful! The Irish people so friendly and helpful, quiet a contrast to the Spanish. We took some timeout the first day to catch Harry Potter at the movies. And then like everywhere in Europe, discovered that Ireland too is having a massive retail sale, so we all went shopping. I had to get another bag to pack all my new stuff and ... read more

Rachel: Well... we stopped off at Galaway for a quick breather and to see if we can find the internet. Our trip is winding down and only two more nites here in Ireland... Rob: Sigh...only two more days left as we round Galway and move on to the Burrens and the Cliffs of Moher. Had a great day in the Mountains going around the Twelve Pins...at least that's what I think the map called them, and Kylemore Abbey. Then drove out after dinner and had a great veiw of the ocean off the sky road in Clifden. I don't know about Rachel but I'm going to miss this country. Well that's all that I have for now. See ya all soon. ... read more

Good morning everyone, Yesterday we left Connemara and went on the scenic drive to Doolin, along the western cost of Ireland. Along the way we stopped in Galway, which I now think of as Ireland's college town. The average age of most of the people there seemed to be about 23 -- lots of schoolkids and students. There was also a lovely pot smell through much of the city... good to see that some things about college towns are universal. We didn't do much other than wander around -- there isn't a ton to do or see in Galway, though the shopping streets are nice and typically European. There was also a fantastic cathedral (St. Nicholas) with green marble floors and a beautiful golden altar... and in a side alcove with a mosaic of Christ's resurrection, ... read more

Galway may have horrible water, but the shopping is great! Gabriel had to leave us yesterday, so today our tour guide was a Aran Island native named Collin. We left Galway with Dublin as our destination, but of course there were stops on the way (and lots of history). The day was so beautiful and we managed to get a little sun while at an Irish monastery. There was a temple Kelly at this monastery, and lots of grave stones. We stopped in a town called Moate for lunch at a Pub (soo good!) and then headed back into Dublin. Again we stayed with Kristen's friend Soren at Griffith College, so we caught a bus to get out there. The bus trip was an interesting experience! We saw the temper of an Irish women flare ... read more
