I left Limerick on Monday and went to Doolin in Co. Clare. I saw the Cliffs of Moher. They were impressive but there were too many tourists. They really kind of ruined it for me. I stayed in a nice hostel in Doolin and went out and saw some really good traditional Irish music. I like the pubs in Doolin because its such a small town and young and old people all hang out together. And old Irish dude was singing after the music ended til the place closed. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to cycle around the Burren due to fouuuul weather. Before I left Doolin yesterday, some girls from the hostel took me out for bloody marys. What a great thing to wake up to on your birthday. I took ... read more

Today Emily and I set out on a pretty last minute adventure to the lovely city of Galway, Ireland. Originally we had not planned to travel to Ireland becasue we just didn't feel that we had the time or the money to make the trek. After hearing over and over how amazing Ireland is and how we have to go check it out while we are in the area we decided to check out flights and found a pretty sweet deal through Ryan Air. Beause niether Emily nor I had much particular interest in any specific city and because we don't really care for the large metropolitan areas we decided to go to Galway instead of Dublin. After living in Oxford I didn't think towns existed that could be much smaller but after traveling to Galway ... read more

Waking at 9.30am I realised I had about half an hour to shower, get changed and take advantage off the complimentry brekfast, then another half hour to get checked out and get to the bus station where I needed to get the bus to a place galled Galway. 4 hours North, on the tip off the Atlantic Ocean. On top off that my head hurts. After gulping my Marmolade and Toast I headed out to the bus... which I missed... by about 20minutes. I had 2 hours to spare untill the next one. I headed over to a huge church (religion is so so so so huuuuge hear) and checked out what was going on, then went to a shopping centre which was half open. I grabbed an Irish Flute!! When the bus finnally did come ... read more

On most days, there are huge swans on the river Corrib-ya know, the river that runs right next to my housing, beside which is the path that I walk every day to get to class or elsewhere. Yes, it is badass. My Corrib Village ID card is a seriously ghetto-laminated piece of paper with my Beloit application picture stuck in, and my name scrawled across in someone else's handwriting. The lamination is already coming apart. Classic. If you pet a stray dog, it WILL follow you home in the cutest way possible. Wagging and smiling and nuzzling your hand occasionally. I am trying desperately to NOT want to pet dogs. Also on the river-kayakers, especially on the sunny days. Occasionally with a motorboat alongside coaching through a megaphone. The people are coaching, not the motorboat. And ... read more

In the course of having to cook for myself here, I've experimented a little, and to put it modestly, had great success. Alex and I decided it would probably be easier and more economical if we shared food and meals, because it's really easier to cook for two people instead of one. The first few nights (after we actually finally bought groceries) we ate a lot of pasta. A LOT of pasta. And toast and cereal. Then I finally got eggs and bacon. Recently, on Tuesday we went for fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn-Alex made the corn and mashed potatoes, which were very good, and i did the chicken, which was a lot of fun and it turned out really well! I just coated the pieces in egg, then flour, then stuck it in the ... read more

I can't keep starting entries with "well", it could so easily get out of control! I've continued to hang out with the same Irish boys, and more of their friends, and we are continually learning about each others' cultures. They are very concerned with their masculinity and fairly homophobic, but that's all in line with Ireland's conservativism (hope that's a word). We've had endless entertainment finding words that we say differently, or things that we have different names for. I have two favorites so far-instead of saying fillet properly, they say it like "fill it"-utterly ridiculous-and with vitamins, ya know how we say it like vite amins, they say vittamins-short i instead of long, i think? They laugh uproariously every time I say ya'll. They'll learn. Instead of "shit" they pronounce it i guess like ... read more

Well I said I'd talk about school in this entry, but i haven't actually had a class yet, so there's really nothing to say! Two of my classes don't start for two weeks, I tried to go to one yesterday but it was just an info session that i'd already been to, so i left, and I think i have at least one class tomorrow, so we'll see about that. None of the classes meet for more than two hours a week. Thats right. two hours. But moving on to more exciting things... We decided with our Beloit girls downstairs that we're going to the Aran Islands this weekend-they're supposed to be really fabulous. And i think our roommate Ruairigh will come too, so that will make it him, me, Alex, Erin, Sally, and Lee. They ... read more

Well, getting here was maybe the most tiring experience of my life, but after 12 hours on 3 different airplanes with 6 and a half total hours of layover, losing 6 hours in the process, three hours of sleep, four hours on a bus sitting next to a wasted Polish guy, dragging 70lbs of luggage two blocks to get a taxi and then up a staircase, i FINALLY made it, fairly unharmed from the process. When I touched down in Dublin airport, it was beautifully sunny. It was really incredible and really green. Like neon, practically. The grass here is very bright and it partially makes up for the cloudy skies. I am rooming with a girl from Beloit who I met up with at the airport, (we didn't know we were rooming together) and ... read more

Geo: 53.363, -8.8209Christmas was good but exhausting. Got everything done but I actually cried buckets it's very emotional seeing the last 10 years of your life (and the hoardings of about 17) go into the attic, but it all seems like a dream now. We worked like dogs 24th & 27-29th & then scrubbed the place, we were leaving at 9am on the Fri 30th so I was up at 6:30am vacuuming! Still we managed to go out 5 of the 7 nights we were home (the other 2 being Christmas night & 27th that was the packing til 2am night) so it wasn't all work but my back was a bit achy by the time we got back here. We waited til Christmas day to go to Galway & got down in 2hrs40 which is ... read more

I spent the last two days in Galway and Limerick visiting my Irish friends Eoin and John who are two of my best friends from San Francisco and were home for the holidays. We decided to meet in Galway because all of their friends from Nortel in Galway were meeting up for a night out. We met up with a bunch of their friends who I had met one way or another when they had visited San Francisco. It was fun to see all of them again. The night ended up being really great. We visited a few different bars and ended up at a cool dance place. It poured rain on the way home and we got completely soaked because of course none of us brought raincoats. The next day Eoin´s brother picked us up ... read more
