I've been meaning to start this thing for several days now, and at almost 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning (Dublin time), I am finally doing so. I shall start at the most appropriate spot: the beginning. Joe and I flew out of O'hare on Tuesday afternoon. Our flight to Philadelphia (with a later connection to Dublin) was scheduled at 4:10 in the afternoon, but when we got there at a couple minutes past 1:00, the nice lady behind the check-in counter informed us that there was an earlier flight leaving for Philly at 1:45. She put us on standby, and we got right through security, and as we were coming up to the gate, they paged our names over the intercom. We were the last two people on the plane, in the last two available seats. ... read more

Greetings from Dublin! Okay, first, the vent: We've been here three days, Jesse still has no luggage, My glasses were lost in the hostel locker room, and we were kept up half the night by some kid in our room with the plague! Everything else is splendid. Jesse saw a salamander, so her trip has been fulfilled. She can go home happy. We started the day yesterday by shaking the hand of an 800 year old corpse at st.Michans church, then went to Dublin Castle, the Guiness Brewery, Kilmainham Gaol, and had a great lunch at cafe eire, where we met a girl who will be going to school with me at Chapel Hill in the fall. How cool is that! She was neat. And tidy. The best part about Jesse losing her luggage is that it's ... read more

Well, another phase of the trip has come and gone. I just saw Mike off to the airport bus and Mat left earlier this morning. At this point I’m feeling like I have put some miles under my feet. From Paris to Montgaillard to Bordeaux to Pau to Biarritz to the Pyrenees to San Sebastian to Barcelona’s L’Eixample, Ciutat Vella, Montjuic, and Barceloneta to Shannon to Limerick to Cork to Killarney to Dublin. I think I’m learning to enjoy the journey and the pleasure of movement, and to relish the expectation of the next destination as much as the memory of the last. My plans have changed somewhat. Tired of being tourists, Mat and Mike (as you might have guessed from what I just said) are headed home, leaving me with a good deal of time ... read more

When Carlee and I were on the Aran Islands, we met these 2 guys from Galway. We were all hanging out on the beach one night and it was pretty late. Anyways, one of the guys got a call on their cell from their friend Paddy who lives in Dublin. Well, it turns out Paddy was quite a singer of traditional and modern Irish songs, and the later in the night it got, the better his songs were. We listened to Paddy's soothing voice and creative Irish songs coming through the cell with the waves and the wind all around us. Anyways, I had a few words with Paddy over the cell, I sang him Oh Canada, Rocky Raccoon and whistled the Strange Brew anthem. We made plans to meet in Dublin, he said, oh just ... read more

3 days in Dublin, Ireland. I haven't updated this blog in forever, mostly due to the lack of proper internet connectivity. Right now I am back in Krakow, in my favorite internet cafe, and I am going to attempt to catch up on the blogging. So. Should I start with the complaining or write about something fun? Ok, something neutral, more like a comment. Being in Dublin Ireland after 3 months of traveling in non-English speaking has been REALLY strange for me. I hear English on the streets when just a week before folks were speaking German, and before that Polish, Estonian, Finnish... I see signs in the streets in English and there's a teeny tiny split second when I am turning the words around in my head trying to figure out the "English meaning". This ... read more

This will be short. Like me. We are in Dublin. We are going to go take a nap. Because we are exciting and fun. Today: James Joyce Center Dublin Writer's Museum Jameson Distillery (Kelly) St. Stephen's Park (Sara) (No surprise on that division of activity). Later: Beer Dancing Tomorrow we sail to Cherbourg, France. That is fun to say. The day after tomorrow we ARRIVE in Cherbourg, France. We don't have any SEATS on this voyage, but that's going to have to be okay. This internet cafe is sketchy and hot and has no coffee. More internet than cafe, really. We would upload our many photos but it is taking forever. We will do that later. That is all. (Sara wants everyone to know that she is here participating in this blog. And the vacation. She ... read more
