7th July 2010 Today I have wheels, and oh yeh I now have a travel buddy, his name is Tom Tom I tell you he is very bossy but he seems to know his way around, most of the time anyway. So off Tom and I head, I was set to head for a little place called Gort, in the county of Clare somehow I ended up in a big place called Galway. Tom and I have communication problems when he says sharp left ahead he actually means TURN LEFT! Funny that. Galway is rather large, it runs along the shore line and the views are picturesque. The homes that line the shore are truly superb. They are large a basic design but fresh and so inviting, most of the home you see are white and ... read more

Got up around 8 so we could get our stuff together, eat and get to coach station on time for today's tour which we are both pretty excited about. We also decided to change hostels for tonight and move to the Galway Hostel House which will save us about 15 dollars. Plus pretty much all hostels are the same so it's not too big a loss to leave Barnacles even though we did enjoy it. Our tour guide was an odd Irish fellow named Desmond who we estimated to be around 120-130 years old and spoke with an accent that I doubt even an Irishman could understand. I wasn't phased by this as I decided to just listen to music for the majority of the time on the bus and gaze out the window at the ... read more

We woke up early this a.m, had a wake up call set for 7 so we could get up shower, breakfast and finish packing before the rental car was delivered at 9am. Turned the tv on and it was 530AM! My body is SO screwy, when i think of the time it is at home i croak! This morning we decided to try a different breakfast we did the buffet. I had Irish cheese, poached egg, fruit and a croissant Jared isnt loving the food... Once our car was here we hit the road. Jared did fantastic driving...for a long time it was motorway, I was wondering if I was ever going to get to see the countryside. I saw a sign for Limerick and told Jared hop off the motorway I remember something in our ... read more

Took the ferry across the River Shannon over to County Clare. Stopped at the Cliffs of Moher and at O'Brien Tower which over looks the Cliffs which was pretty exciting for Colleen. She hasn't stopped telling us that she is an O'Brien and has relatives here and has connections. Went to a medival dinner with singing lords and ladies at Bunratty Castle. We drank Mead which is a wine with honey mixed in it. It was outlawed until about 10 years ago, pretty potent. Typically, it was given to people who were just married and they would drink it for 30 days after their wedding hence honeymoon wine. It was supposed to make them fertile. After dinner, we came back to the hotel bar and watched the volcano explode again. Who knows when we'll get home. ... read more

Today I took a drive from Bunratty to the Cliffs of Moher. I stopped off on the way at St Bridgits Well, a quant little cemetary with a room whereby you could leave gifts in memory for the departed. There was a stream running through and it made a nice memorial. Drove to Moher and the cliffs were stunning. It was a little windy, some points you were stopped in your tracks and had to hold hard not to be walking backwards. Very gusty in places, and in others it was calm, depending on where the wind was at the time. Got some great photos, cant wait to show you. At one point in the cliff face, there was a waterfall producing a stream down the cliff. This went for about 5 metres before the strong ... read more

We actually spent a good couple of months in Ireland, but only did a little bit of touristing (new word, thanks Garry!). We rented a car for a few days and headed south west to Co Clare and Limerick. We spent a few nights in a small town called Doolin, and while there we checked out the Cliffs of Moher. We got our first glimpse of the cliffs which are pretty impressive. By the time we got to the next lookout platform, in typical irish fashion, the fog had come in pretty thick and fast and we could barely see 1m in front of us, as you can see from the pic's the cliffs had totally disappeared. But at least we saw them, a lot of people arrived just after us and didn't see a thing. ... read more

Today was day two in a row of non-stop Irish rain. After a lovely breakfast at the castle (definitely the nicest place we’ve stayed at this whole trip) and a bit of playing with the resident castle dog,( who liked to fetch rocks!!), we drove up the N69 to the N67 (and crossed the Shannon Ferry) to ward the Cliffs of Moher. To say that it was wet outside is a bit of an understatement. I’d guess that It’s generally quite windy at the cliffs anyway, but during a downpour..…well, I’ll let you use your imagination. My umbrella was twisting in about 30 different directions (most of them inside out) and many people were ducking for cover in the visitor center because it was so bad inside. We walked up to where the two hiking paths ... read more

Wednesday, July 1 Last night, even though we were tired after our flight and drive from the airport, we stayed up to watch the sunset at 10:00 over the Atlantic. Ireland’s not the land of the midnight sun, but I’d never experienced a day as long as this before. Today is the best weather until the weekend (rain and showers only PART of the day, clouds otherwise), so we drove up to the Cliffs of Moher, over to Kilfenora, through the Burren, and then circled north from Ballyvaughan through Doolin before arriving back home at 9:30. Dean is getting used to hedgerow branches scraping his window as I drive, knowing it’s a choice between that and losing the right side of the car to an oncoming truck, van or tour bus! I thought driving on ... read more

Thursday, June 25 - Kilmacduagh, Kilfenora and other Kool Keltic (Celtic) Names Two days in Galway was barely enough, yet we were forced to hit the road once again to drive to Dingle today. Along the way we had grand plans to stop at the Cliffs of Moher and The Burren. The long drives between destinations were definitely cutting into our sight seeing time by now and even sapping our energy but we had to press on. Our first stop of the day was another random countryside ruin of an old abbey called Kilmacduagh. I just love Celtic names. Put “Kil” in front of anything and it sounds ancient, cool, tough, and a little mysterious. Since we had a packed itinerary today Tiffany griped at the detour to Kilmacduagh but when I saw the round tower ... read more

Today we left Galway and toured the Southwest of Ireland. We visited the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren in County Clare. We visited the Burren first which is so weird. It's like a lunar landscape of limestone. The rocks were left after the last ice age and when the glaciers melted away they left seeds from all over the world. So, there are plants growing there from the arctic and the Mediterranean. Then, we saw the legendary Cliffs of Moher. I have to say that I enjoyed the cliffs on the Aran Islands more. The Cliffs or Moher were much more touristy and had man-made steps to climb. At the Dun Aungess on the Aran Islands, you had to climb the original steps in the fort. It was still an impressive view, nevertheless. Plus, my ... read more
