We went for a drive around the countryside this morning. Boy there’s lots of stones in Ireland. Stones and sheep. We drove towards The Cliffs of Moher to have a look. As we’ve found out everywhere in Ireland they want to charge a small fortune to have a look at any thing. 8euro ($14) to park the car and then we would have had to buy a ticket to look out over the cliffs. No way. Ireland is much more expensive then I thought. Wine, eating out and seeing anything, even if it is natural, is all outrageously priced. Came across an old stone farmhouse and a ruined chapel, that we wandered through, they were free. We had soup and bread in a pub in Lahinch for lunch, then wandered the streets, the shops are so ... read more

Today was our day to visit the Cliffs of Moher. Jessie has already been to visit the Cliffs, so she stayed in Galway to finish her paper due on Friday while we did something she had already done. The day started with a wonderful full Irish breakfast: fried eggs, sausages, ham, potato cake (must have potatoes), Irish brown bread, toast, juice and coffee. We made it through Galway without any problems and headed south around Galway Bay. We stopped at Dunguaire Castle in Kinvarra to take a few pictures and walk around the castle. We originally wanted to take the coast road to the Cliffs, but crazy Irish drivers caused a change in plans. Side note: The roads outside the city get very narrow. There are stone walls everywhere. Apparently, in clearing their fields the people ... read more

So on Saturday the 15th we flew out of London Gatwick to Shannon, Ireland. Our flight arrive just after 11pm and we rented a car (we got a Nissan Micra...not a bad little car!). We opted for the upgrade, which was only 4 Euros, because it was an automatic. Now, Stacie and I can both drive stick but didn't want to be bothered trying to drive stick on the wrong side of the road, on the wrong side of the car, and trying to shift with our left instead of our right hand. Yikes! We found our B&B after getting a little turned around. We stayed at Avalon B&B in Shannon which, if you know where you're going, is only a few minutes drive from the airport but it took us a bit longer lol. The ... read more

After leaving Cashel, I headed west. It was nice to be in a rental car again, because it meant I could veer wildly off the road when I saw a sign pointing to a pottery place. I had heard that Ireland was even worse than England for timely and communicative road signage, but I didn't find that to be true. With a map and some planning, I got everywhere I wanted to go - lazy ferry drivers aside. I did have some issues skirting Limerick, though. It was easier said than done, because the road signs pointed me in a direction that was the complete opposite of my end goal. Turns out they were right, though - even though I still don't know what path I took around the city. I just know that I had ... read more
