And off I go again! (As per usual, sampling of photos here... there are way too many to ever post) Originally I planned to return to Norway so that I could see it in all its wintery glory, but after pricing everything I decided I might as well hit up Iceland once more and return to Akureyri. It's also a nice bookend to the year and my decade of travels - Akureyri was my first real trip, all by myself, that started me on this crazy adventure that has brought me to 40+ countries, 20+ trips and more hostels than I can count lol. I thought it was fitting to close Vol. 1 of my travels where it began. Flight landed at 3:40am (oof) so I decided I'd learn from last year... Last year I just ... read more

I caught the bus into the big bus stop (the nice taxi man gave me several tickets to use), unloaded my very heavy bag into a locker and walked into the city. It took me about 15 minutes, past ponds with lots of ducks, swans and gulls. People were out feeding them. There was a mother swam with 4 babies that were as big as her. You could only tell because they were still a little bit grey in colour... big babies! It was really cold. The wind here in Iceland is almost relentless just different speeds of relentless. I walked to the end of the city to the convention centre which was at least lovely and warm and then wandered back into the main street where the most remarkable and scary lighted cat awaits. Slept most of the night. I must have been tired! I have no idea what day it is... I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Ariel near Heathrow and the room comes with breakfast. I was hungry so wandered down at 6:30... and had hot English vegetarian breakfast. I didn't take a photo so you'll have to imagine eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms with toast and tea. All very nice. Checkout time was 12:00 so I went back to bed and slept for another couple of hours. Nuggie and Theo's flight was supposed to arrive at 12:30 so I caught the bus and arrived at Terminal 3. To get to Terminal 4, I had to catch the underground train. Their flight had already landed but with the queues of yesterday, I knew they were going to be a while. ... read more

Wow! What a day! We got ourselves organised and into the breakfast room nice and early. The food was a little different, typical Scandinavian fare with the slices of meat and cheese and hard boiled eggs, with ryvita type crispbreads. We noticed in Sweden too that their hard boiled eggs always have whiter than white shells. The scrambled eggs were more like chopped up omelette. The pork sausages were nice. I tried their version of hash browns and they were nicer than what we usually have. After brekky we got ourselves organised and went out to the foyer to wait for our tour bus. We got talking to a German couple in the foyer. The lady had shown me how to operate the orange juice machine at breakfast. They were amazed to meet us - they’d ... read more

What a lovely day! When we awoke we discovered there were mountains overlooking our harbour! With snow on them! We couldn’t see them yesterday with the low clouds and rain. So we had an early brekky - we were there when they started at 7. Brekky and then the final touches of our packing. Our large suitcases had been collected last night. Our tag colour was called about 8.30 and we went down to the gangway where Noprada was standing - she’s another of the international hostesses - she’s a lovely Philippina who speaks at least five languages. She helps Colin with trivia and she runs the sudoku challenge. She hugged me as we left. Silversea had organised a marquee on the dock where our suitcases were waiting. From there we walked 10 steps to a ... read more

Well, after a restless night on a perfectly stable ship (I liked the rocking ok?) we went to brekky to find it was a wet and windy day here in Reykjavik. After brekky Tom went ashore to find a post office and I went upstairs to take some pics. It was cold as well as wet and windy so I came back inside to the panorama lounge to have a warming coffee and read some more of my Marian Keyes book. I noticed another lady getting an interesting looking drink in a smaller sized champagne glass - it was a Baileys!! I thought yes, it’s after 10 (just) i’ll have one too! When Tom returned all cold and damp from his outing ashore, a Baileys warmed him up nicely too while we were reading. We had ... read more

We awoke refreshed after another night in the open sea. The weather last night had not been as rough as I‘d expected, and that’s what I told the captain when I saw him at breakfast in La Terrazza. It was just a night at sea, but he said the bad weather will arrive when we are at Reykjavik. We thought it best to do the small bit of washing before we have to pack tomorrow, so I did that while Tom went to another enrichment lecture. After that we did some reading before it was time for the whisky and whiskey tasting down at the bar. We had a Bushmills Irish whiskey, Chivas Regal blended whisky and a Glenmorangie single malt whisky. They were the 3 that were planned, and then we had some Laphroig, Jameson‘s ... read more
