Kos..has somehow solved the problem of being a huge tourist destination...miles of beaches with selfcontained resorts...including a Club Med..with retaining its cozy nature and abundant archeological sites....the ruins o f the healing center devoted to Askalepius at which Hippocrates practiced is on a series of terraces just above the city of Kos. In a wooded area with views to Asia and nearby islands, the whole sky laid out above and beyond, the patient ascended a series of steps, increasing from 30 to 60 to reach the highest point on which stood monumental stautes of Hygea and Askelepius..along the way, springs of fresh water, rooms for priests and patients, temples to Apollo and other deities, well restored, some dating to the 4th Century BC. While there are many early Christian churches, 4-6 Cent AD, the emphasis is ... read more

We were wonderıng how the return to the EU would be. We were expectıng lots of fences and queues and hassle. Surprısıngly ıt was easy and we jumped the car queues and cycled at speed down hıll ınto Greece. The crossıng we choose was not a busy one and the Albanıan sıde even forgot to charge us the 10 euro border tax that the Foreıgn offıce had warned us about. (please excusse the 'ı' - İ am on a turkish keyboard and keep forgetting to hıt 'i') Borders are strange thıngs; I can not really imagıne that just because we pass a lıne on the map that everythıng wıll be dıfferent, but ıt ıs. There are more trees ( Albanıa was partıcularly deforested) and the leaves are startıng to turn- Autumn's comıng! The fırst vıllage ın ... read more

Hello all, well we finally made it to Ios and the place we are staying (Francescos) is nice and the people are really friendly and helpful. Had a welcome shot at the bar at 10pm then headed out to the Orange bar (which played Indie and rock music) got very drunk and had a good time, the people who owned the Pub were really nice (a brit lady and and a Greek bloke)and got some free malteser shots and they even walked us home so we were ok! Kept requesting metallica 'wherever we may roam' and we were headbanging all night (we managed to sprain our necks). The next day was a bit of a write off but we managed to make it to the beach. I cant believe how friendly the local people are here ... read more

Sun! Blue Sky! Birthplace of Hippocrates!...whaaa? Where have these Levetons got to now? Well, dear friends here is the saga of the path to the Isle of Kos.... We left Vienna as the sky continued to cloud and threaten rain...and decided to seek out a small mountain retreat in the Austrian Alps, favored by Freud for vacations and Eva's friend Sophie. Vienna, Salzburg, Bad Gastein....so easy on Eurailpass...After getting off one station too soon we arrived at Bad Gastein and found ourselves in a truely 'Gimley' hotel, almost deserted.'Gimley' the name of a very dark Canadian director's notion of victorian horror and madness. Everything in town is oriented to massage, radon treatments and purges of unmentionable sorts. The town has a menacing(or thrilling) waterfall crashing through the center of town.... It was almost deserted and other ... read more

Left for Ios on Saturday morning and arrived about 4pm and found that no-body was waiting for us like we had arranged so jumped on the bus to take us into the village where our hostel was supposed to be. Got into the village and wandered around for a while and found the tourist information centre where we asked where our accomodation was, she had never heard of it so I used my mobile to call the place (Francescos) and she was surprised that we hadnt been picked up from the ferry as the driver is always there to meet the ferries, she then told me to go to the national bank and ask in one of the shops as they know where Francescos is. Spent a while looking for the national bank and couldnt find ... read more

Hey up all, We are relaxing in beautiful Paros until the 17th then we move on to Ios next which is a party island, it is pretty quiet here but nice and loads of good beaches. Me and Pamela have named ourselves the Albino twins (or the pasty's) as we are the palest people here and we are scaring some of the local children. Since we are the only pasty's here everyone thinks we are twins. Spent a lot of time lying around on different beaches along the coast, the best one so far is called golden beach. Eating lots of pasta (in the apartment) and ice cream (thanks for the cabbage tip though :-) I may yet try it). The champagne of fizzy orange Fanta is everywhere, have tried all the flavours. Also eating Greek ... read more

When I boarded the overnight ferry headed to Ios, any romantic vision I had had of meeting independent budget travelers from around the world, exchanging stories over tea, and falling asleep with the smell of the Aegean in my hair, quickly was replaced with the harsh reality of a dirty boat crowded with cranky, dirty people. Although cabins are available, most people (and all students) purchase “deck seats.” People literally sleep on every surface of the ship—on all of the floor space and on any available bench, chair, or couch. I did not have a sleeping bag and could only imagine the amount of lice that would crawl in my hair if I slept on the floor, so I stayed awake for the entirety of the 9-hour ride to Ios. (Also, note that it gets very ... read more

I couldn't get up with the fast pace of backpacking and updating this journal. I am now back in the Uk at work, and am getting around to updating it. Where to begin- I love the fact that I woke up everymorning in a new place. The feeling you get after you've conquered a city. The way the city evolves from day to night. Travelling for me is about learning. . It also gives you so much freedom for yourself. YOu do only as much as you want to do- If you miss something it's your own fault. This type of independce is so new to me. I loved every bit of it. Although I am incredibly stubborn you live and learn. Isn't that what life's about? Oh wait you love as well. I could continue ... read more

So After a terrible bus ride from Corfu to Athens which consisted of 2 ferries and one extremely crazy bus driver, (ie passing cars on really curvy moutain roads) I finally got to Athens. I had been told to get out of Athens as soon as possible but I thought that it was pretty cool. Hung out with some pretty cool Aussies and checked out the acropolis. I thought that it was pretty neat except I thought that I was going to be able to walk around inside the actual parthenon but since they are doing work on it ( and have been since 2000) you can't. All and all I was really impressed with the size and in general how good it looked. After that checked out some more of the sights around Athens, namely ... read more
