One of the most fascinating visits we had in Greece was to the Tholos Tombs (Domed Tombs) of the Bronze Age. The burial chambers we visited were on the outskirts of the famous village of Marathon. Nothing remains inside due to thieves who visited these Beehive shaped burial chambers over the centuries, however they are still beautiful, empty as they are. To get there we had to pass through the Corinth Canal, and when we stopped for a short break we met a very old lady who promised us that she has magical powers. If we buy some of her hand made souvenirs, some of these powers would be passed on to us. Who could refuse such a sweet and magical lady? The area also lies a few kilometres away close to the mountains and lake next ... read more

So, here I find myself in another of the world's great ancient cities, Athens, Greece. I apologise in advance...the spelling in this is terrible. Anyway, I arrived on Boxing Day and of course, as I much expected, all of the tourist sites were closed. However, most shops and tavernas were open, so I ate and shopped all day! Well, first I walked all around the city centre (thanks Lonely Planet for the guided walking tour map). I found my way from Syntagma Sqaure all the way to the Acropolis. In Syntagma Square, there was a festival happening...I initially thought it was just for Boxing Day, but it has continued the rest of this week so far. It must go on until New Year's. There is a merry-go-round for the kids, and a little village set up ... read more

Well when the opportunity arose for me to join my friends in Athens for Thanksgiving I of course jumped at the chance! Abby is studying there for the semester and Amelia, coming from Rome, Ali, coming from Amsterdam, and I all converged upon her and her fair city for four glorious days of fun. It was a very mellow adventure full of long chats and exploring the city, oh, and the food, how could I forget the food! Thursday was spent traveling to Athens and inside because of rain and wind but we ate our first gyros and Greek salad so the night was far from a waste. Not quite the usual Thanksgiving feast but I was warmed by being with my good friends and found myself at home in a very foreign place. Friday we ... read more

So we left Florence after having a wicked time and then made our way to Rome. At Rome we stayed in a tiny hostel in the middle of the city and met a few cool guys from Oz and the UK. We saw the Colleseum ( i know i spelt it wrong! as i will do for everything else), the Pantheon, had a laugh at the dresses on the Swiss guards of Vatican City, saw the Spanish Steps, and lots of other well famous bits and pieces. After 4 days in Rome we jumped on a train and went south to Brindisi where we stayed at a hostel for the night and then boarded a ferry destined for Patra in Greece. After 16 hours on the big boat, we hopped on a train and arrived in ... read more

The Athens Classic Marathon follows the course of the original marathon. From the town of Marathon, runners follow a 42K (26 miles) course all the way into Athens’ Panathaneic Stadium (the marble stadium that housed the first modern Olympics in 1938). In addition to the full marathon, organizers offer a 10K race for those whose “age or physical condition prevents them from completing the full marathon” (a quote from the official website… I suppose I fall in the latter category). When I signed up a few months ago for the 10K race, I had little faith that I would be able to complete the 6.2 mile course, and, when I arrived at the race on Sunday morning, I was still doubting my ability to run 6 miles. I had barely adhered to my training schedule, and ... read more

Hello everyone, apologies for not writing more but I really haven't had the time, which, when traveling, can be used as a valid excuse (read, I'm having a good time). So, a lot has happened since I last wrote, and I don't know how much time I'm going to have, so bear with me and my terrible typing. Budapest was fantastic. I went to gorgeous baths with wrinkly (but supple) skinned old men. At the bath, if you don't wear a bathing suit, they provide you with a...handkerchief, its basically a small hand towel with a string that goes around your back, which means your tooshie is exposed to all and your front...well, lets just say I had a good time examining the ceiling. But the baths, oh the baths, they were sooo relaxing, beatifully ornate, ... read more

Well, I spent almost two weeks in Greece. I know that some relatives must be getting impatient to know what I've been up to, so here is my belated report. Athens is a big city, not unlike other European capitals. About half of Greece's population of 10-11 million live there, I'm told. I had been bracing myself for the place to be filthy and smelly, since Athens has for some time held the distinction of being Europe's most polluted city. With the Olympics though, maybe the city cleaned up a bit, and I didn't think it was too bad. One thing that was different than other cities I've visited was the dogs. Everywhere there were strays wandering about, lying on sidewalks, and following around anyone with food. I visited the Acropolis, the Agora, and a few ... read more

Summer 2005. This is my third time in Greece and it won't be the last one for sure! Elektra is a precious guide for exploring this country; thanks to her, I experienced Greece in a way tourists normally don’t. You get a great advantage when your girlfriend is from the place you visit! What to say… Athens is a mixture of ancient sites, people living attached to their tradition, and modernity entering quickly into their lives. It is a big city that is going from a tortuous past to a bright future hitting some bumps on the road, nonetheless Greeks are proud of that. As soon as you exit from the city, you are surrounded by history, good food, and rural habits exquisitely mixed. This is the aspect I like most of Greece, even though it ... read more

So this past weekend was lots of fun! We decided to take an overnight train to Thessaloniki late Thursday night and then were ready for a full day on Monday! While Thessaloniki is still Greece's second largest city, I got the feeling it was much less cosmopolitan than Athens. We referenced our Greece guidebooks and made sure we went around to see as many sites as possible, visiting museuems, churches, interacting with Greek people, and just walking around! We decided to go to Thessaloniki to get a taste for northern Greece, since much of our free weekends thus far have been spent on beautiful Greek islands! Oh- and good news! I've unloading my pictures from my camera thanks to help from HP customer service. So tomorrow I can start showing what Greece looks like! More to ... read more
