This was the beginning of a two-day adventure that I just completed. Sidenote: I lost the camera cable, so I'll have to find another way to upload the photos (maybe someone around the hostel can help... I'll check tomorrow). Day 12 started out in Athens. I crawled out of bed in the hostel, still groggy and fighting off the cold. Also, the guy from Brazil was coughing all not... sounded pretty bad and so I tried to stay away from him. The girl in the room (mixed dorm - him, her, and me) was from D.C. We caught the bus to the train station at about 7:40 am. I tried to catch an early train to Patras, but missed it, so I went to a cafe and got breakfast. Not too eventful. The train to Patras ... read more

Wow! What a dreary way to start the day... it was the kind of day that thriller movies start at with... cold, lightly-raining, heavily overcast... But the weather is what it is... Heading out from the train station, I caught a bus to the central area of Thessaloniki. It has a long walkway along the ocean about five feet above the water... so it just drops off. One of the first things I noticed was Greek flags all over the place... seemed a bit over-patriotic at the time... hanging out windows, people selling them on the street, etc... more on that later. Thessaloniki has a lot left over from the Romans, and so I checked that out. Galerius Maximianus had a massive palace built there around 300 AD. Most of it has fallen apart/destroyed/built over, etc. ... read more

Thessaloniki was okay, but with the dreary day, exhaustion of carrying around my bag all over, and overdoing it with the desserts (thus, not feeling so hot... in addition to trying to kick the remnants of a cold), my expectations of Athens had kind of dimmed. This morning, I peaked outside and found crystal-clear blue skies... not a cloud ANYWHERE! :) And the weather was about around 60 degrees (this was about 8 AM). That was a good start. I took a taxi to the subway and then set out for the Accropolis. I exited the subway and after about 50 yards I caught the first glimpse of it on a hill way above me... and it kind of took my breath away (and, believe me, I'm not in to artificially building this kind of stuff ... read more

Hi all. Hope you are managing to keep up with our travel journal, & that it hasn’t been too much information for you just yet. We just returned last night from Greece, & although it was a bit of a cold trip (the weather was nice & sunny but the wind was a bit cold), we had an excellent time. We didn’t confine ourselves to Athens specifically, although we never really got out of Southern Greece. It was the kind of trip we really needed - to get out of dark rainy London in the wintertime, & I think Vaughan especially enjoyed the break from work. While he is back at work today, I have a break for the rest of the week, while school is out for mid-term, & it gives me a bit of ... read more

Crazy damn Aussie!! (In an american accent) I cruised off the road in my scooter, down an embankment, through some trees and hit the skids & come to a stop at the edge of a drop off into the sea! Pretty nice beach down there lasds! We ( 2 american lads & a canadian guy) decided to go to an island off athens for the day to go exploring. So we cought the ferry over to Aegina Is ( 1 of those hydro foil boats that sit up above the H2O) We got there & had some grilled octopus & a beer then hired scooters. We cruised road the island, lovely scenery, not a cloud in the sky, crystal clear H2O, the coast road, an awesome bakery, the temple of athina, mono's, burnouts & general crazy ... read more

Sitting on the roof of the hostel with the Acropolis right in front of me havin a beer, olives & feta watching a shit hot sunset, awesome! After a 30 hr boat cruise (this ship was huge, bars, restaurants, a disco & an empty pool!) & a 3 hr bus trip I finally got into Athens. But the metro had just stopped @ 12 so I had to get a taxi but the driver didn’t really know where to go and had no English. So he dropped me closish to the hostel & after a bit of walkin about I got there and finally a shower and a bed, yer! I stayed in the Athens Backpackers & it was a top hostel, run by Greek aussies, a bar, kitchen, free breky, data projector for movies ... read more

After Delphi, it was a quick drive back into Athens. We decided we better put the hotel Ionis behind us and try a hotel in the Plaka which one of Mau's former students recommended(will explain soon), The Central hotel. Guess what happened as we were trying to get to the hotel in downtown Athens? Thats right! We got lost again. The damned one-way streets leave little room for error, and after missing the correct turn it took us twenty minutes to get back on track. We eventually got to the hotel and checked in. The Central hotel was a big step up from the Ionis: better location; newly remodeled; much cleaner; etc... That night we enjoyed a nice Continental dinner at a nearby chic restaurant, where our server was a German woman who spoke better English ... read more

Getting into the the groove of blogging here. Let's try and finish Greece and the rest of Europe, seeing that we've been in hot and sunny South America now for a month. Let's see, where were we? Ah, Leaving Nafpaktos on January 2nd, we were going back to Athens for a couple more nights before M&M left us to return to the States. Before returning to Athens we absolutely had to visit the historic ruins at Delphi. Southbound on a beautiful day, the morning drive along the coast was spectacular. The only problem for Holden was that his sunglasses had been lost somewhere around Meteora and the strong glare of the sun was overwhelming in shotgun - can't see all the beauty with one's eyes closed. After a while we turned inland and drove through the ... read more

We should've mentioned earlier that Greece was -along with Australia- a focal point of planning our worldwide jaunt. From the beginning, we both longed to visit Greece, for both the history and the scenery. This is where the island of Santorini comes in. Many people have spoken well of the Greek Isles, and there was never any doubt that we would end up on one of them. Couldn't have picked a better one than Santorini. Along these lines, it is time to give credit to Mau and Meris for their decision to join us in Greece for the holidays. Their generosity and zeal for travelling paved the way for a great trip to Santorini - not to mention the rest of Greece.....Thanks!!! We landed in the small airport on Santorini around 9pm and our host from ... read more
