Well today was quite interesting. Got up had a shower, then left to go see the Viktualienmarkt. Its an open air market. I just call it the Alien Market. Anyhow, we went there to get some food, lots of fresh fruit markets and such as well as other restaurants. First I got chicken nugget things and chips (french fries) and that didnt fill me so I bought the biggest pretzel I have ever seen, it was great. After we explored that market for a couple hours we decided to go to the worlds oldest beer hall, Hofbräuns. Thats where Jocelyne and I both ordered a liter of beer and she had her lunch since she didnt eat at the market. We had quite a good time there. The beer was excellent in that beer hall. we actually went to cologne on saturday......but i've been working on our presentation and paper for class so im getting around to posting this now......had a great time......cologne is a really cool city, esp the cathedral......it's really interesting to note that while almost everything in the major german cities was destroyed during the war and subsequently rebuilt, this cathedral was somehow left more or less intact, so it's the real deal......it was overcast the entire day again, but at least were were inside for 95% of the rain......unlike luxembourg......next it looks like we're heading to munich after our final on friday...... - joe... read more

the flight was disgusting, an hour delayed, lots of meals, repeated turning on and off of the lights. i've slept for only about 4 hours during this 18-hour journey. this time was the german police officer to ask me the purpose of going to germany, and he asked me to show of my euro prepared. i know what did he mean. so i directly showed my credit card. ALLES GUTE! as shown in weather forecast, Düsseldorf is rainy and cold. my eurail pass is yet activated and i had to calculate if there were any cheaper way to buy some discounted ticket. i knew nothing and my brain refused to calculate. manman helped me a lot, maybe i owed her a loft of bread! the atmosphere in köln is strange. no huge poster, no special decoration. ... read more

Saturdaz night I was all settled into bed and readz to sleep around 11p. But then I thought, I should reallz finish up the postcards and send them out; I onlz have one more week left here. So I got out of bed, went over to mz closet, unlocked it, and looked (verz quicklz) for those postcards. I didn't see them (didn't have mz glasses) so I shut the closet door behind me. All would be well at this point had I not left mz kezs INSIDE of the closet, and it self locked as I closed it. There was a tinz moment of disbelief, like, did I reallz leave mz kezs in there, zeah, I think I did, cuy i needed the kezs to unlock the door, and now that the door's closed, I'm not ... read more

Well Ive been in Munich for a day now, but I dont like it as much as Berlin. Perhaps because berlin had better maps available, or maybe because I understood the stuff that was there better, the berlin wall and such. Or maybe it was becaue of the Döner Kebabs. Lol I dont know, but today was very rainy, and I think that tomorrow we will try to find the famous beer hall here. Oh, and it was funny, 2 guys staying at my hostel were stationed in germany and are on leave right now, made me think of you joe. Its sunday so everything is closed, markets, stores pretty much everything, very different from the US. We just walked around and since its sunday we can get into some cathedrals for free and look around. ... read more

I wanted to do something fun today so this morning I headed into Bonn. My original plan was to go to the Bonn Botanical Garden, check out the veggie/fruit markt, and maybe see about ...um... buying another jacket. Something not as cheap as 7.9 Euros, but something perhaps a bit more substantial and that I can alternate with the one that I have worn 7 days in a row now. I arrived in Bonn and found out from the Tourist Information lady -- who was hinting that I really take the Japanse or the Korean pamphletes because they would be easier for me than English... -- that the Garden was closed on Saturdays. And I had found out from my friend/host Andreas that the Garden is free on all days except Sunday (tomorrow), so looks like ... read more

Day 52: May 27 - CZECH REPUBLIC - Prague, GERMANY - Dachau, Munich Accommodation: Haus International Hostel, Munich It was time to leave the Czech Republic and visit Germany. We didn't get stopped at the border by passport control this time. It took another 5 or 6 hours or so with a few stops before Tash asked us something important. She said we were coming close to Dachau Concentration Camp but asked if any of us wanted to visit and if anyone did not want to visit the camp as it could be a very emotionally disturbing experience for some people. A fair few people were very interesting in going and no-one objected to it so we made a stop. We've all heard the stories from World War II where Hitler secretly ordered the Nazis to ... read more

Because I had no plans for the upcoming long weekend, I consulted my wonderful excel sheet of travel aims and it had a Köln entry primary because I had been told there was chocolate factory that featured a chocolate fountain. This all sounded very ‘Willy Wonka’ to me so I gathered a few interested people for a day trip: Pauli & Andy from Airbus and Daniel who lived across the road from my old place. (btw. these words with umlauts in them are completely evil to pronounce, so every 2nd City used in the Learn German Text is Köln) Because we wanted to make the most of the day whilst still making sure that we do so on a budged (10€ each), Daniel, Paulina and me caught the 6:19 train from Bremen. However this very early ... read more
