Whew! Arriving in Germany was a whirlwind. We had gotten used to freezing temperatures, desolate countryside, and locals who all spoke English. Yesterday we arrived in Frankfurt and found it quite a challenge. It is the extreme opposite from Iceland here. Germany is experiencing unusually hot weather, and English speakers are much harder to come by. Simple things like reading a menu are pretty impossible even with our translation guide.... so beer, bratwurst, and pretzels (and I mean PRETZELS), a few of the only things we do understand, are more than getting us by so far. We arrived at our hostel in Munich today. A beautiful city. We will spend 4 days here, which is a very welcome break from moving to a new location every day. And the prices! Paying a "normal" amount for ... read more

Guten Tag everyone and greetings from Berlin..... I don't want to make this an unabashed advert but believe me, there is more going on in this city than any other city in Europe. Even after 17 years, construction cranes are all over the landscape....especially in the eastern part. New buildings are going up, old buildings are being rehabbed, wall areas are turned into parks. Even areas that you'd think would never improve are being gentrified. It's not just in one area, but all over the place. There is a feeling, an atmosphere of growth, but also personality in all parts of the city. You can go to Kreuzberg, which has a big multi-cultural fair and parade this weekend; go to Prenzlauer Berg, an upcoming former part of the east and see all the alternative lifestyles. ... read more

Hallo Guys, So the flight from Athens to Berlin took about 3 hours, and was a three hour full flight so I didnĀ“t arrive in Berlin till about 11.30. And I was really tired (I'd gotten into a habit of early nights!) and the entire flight stood and waited for our luggage to come for about an hour and a half so by the time I set off for the hostel it was about 1am. I found the train easily enough but I had to change from my train to a U-bahn train and when i went to the U-bahn station everything had closed up and all the trains had stopped for the night. A German guy came up and asked for directions I think, although all he got was a blank stare and "what the.." ... read more

It seems like I'm getting into the swing of writing up the last few days of travels, and leaving the present for the next blog. So title confusion aside (Checkpoint Charlie is not in Dresden, for example) - I'll be working on a where-and-when-there-is-internet basis. Anyway, enough of the boring admin. Hello from Dresden! Berlin was good, but Dresden is cool. If you had to pick them out of a crowd, Berlin is the Alpha Male Almost-Skin-Head-Jock and Dresden is the Political Art Student. Amsterdam never made it out of bed. The weight of history in Berlin is oppressive at times. Fragments of the war are all over the city, like Checkpoint Charlie and chunks of the fallen Wall. The central island was blasted clean. It's hard to grasp everything that has happened here - ... read more

Hallo alle! We arrived back home last night from our trip in Berlin and I think it is safe to say that both Jo and I had a blast. We got the opportunities to go see many things, likely that we will never see again. For instance, we went to an Opera, (I'm not entirely sure I would want to sleep through another), and we went to see the Philharmonic Orchestra. Of the two the Orchestra was my favourite, the music was incredible, almost made me want to take up music lessons...almost. We also went to the Zoo, even if it were only for an hour, we powered our way through and saw as much as we could. In the same day we made it to Checkpoint charlie and the museum there. The next day we ... read more

Hi all We arrived in Cologne about half an hour ago after coming from Berlin. Had a great couple of days in Berlin with Ray my brother in law and nephew, Glenn. It ws some soccer final there so it was party time - for us as well!! We tried to jump the underground, but the line we needed took fans to the game and they were packed like sardines on the train, every time the doors opened you could hear the chanting, fun times!! Had lunch near the Brandenburg Gate with a live band playing, was a great time!! Then walked for ages seeing the Reichstag building, Kaiser wilhelm church which was bombed during the war and remains as a monument, also saw the remains of the Wall - I love Berlin its such a ... read more

Marburg, GermanyAssi Visamo Hello! On Saturday May 26th I travelled with my friend Will to Marburg, about 1 hour North from Frankfurt Am Main by train. The city of Marburg is located by the Lahn River and is a beautiful German city with traditional German buildings and walking paths. "Other cities have a university, Marburg is a university" as the saying of Marburg goes. Quoting the city web site "The Phillipps-University in Marburg is very old, founded in 1529, and has about 18 000 students and 7000 employees. The majority of students come from all parts of Germany." We arrived at Marburg around lunch time and found a good place to eat just around the corner from railway station. After lunch we crossed the river and walked towards downtown. On our way there we saw t ... read more

The breakfast selection was awesome this morning with a variety of choices besides the usual bacon and eggs. There was also smoked salmon, chocolate brownies and even pretzels! It certainly made up for no a/c. I have to say this was the best breakfast selection I ever had at a hotel! We stopped in medieval Nordlingen where there was a market area selling assortments of flowers, fish and fruits, mostly strawberries. The buildings were very cute with a variety of colors that included pink, tan, green and red. It still has a city wall which I found intriguing. There was a market going on that was selling food items (fish and fruits) and flowers. We were only here about an hour and then moved on.... read more
